Laya POV
Groban wasn’t talking to me, I could hear him pacing up and down in the cell next to me and I wondered whether or not he would eventually create a trench with the number of times I heard him marching, the velocity of his determination, and frustration was suffocating me with each and every stride.
I sat back against the wall with my knees up to my chest, it must have been hours, I couldn’t be certain of time because it was darkened in here and the only source of light came from a few torches which hung on the walls leading toward the way I’m guessing was the only way in and out of this place. It was definitely very medieval that was for sure, and I couldn’t stop myself from wondering about everything that has happened from the moment Groban had taken me from tribe Taulantii…

I was about to respond to Jake when I heard a sudden noise coming from the darkness, all of a sudden I noticed guards dragging an unconscious form towards the cell next to mine, and my eyes widened when I instantly realized it was Groban. There was so much blood, way more than I had seen the last time he was attacked. His head was hanging down as his feet scraped along the ground, I felt the lump implode on itself inside my throat as I gulped. I immediately jumped to my feet as I rushed over to the metal bars, “Groban!” I wailed as the tears began to flow from my cheeks. His drenched hair was hanging tasseled around his face and instead of sweat or water dripping from the ends, it was rather blood, his blood. Groban never answered me and I sat there for what felt like forever trying to figure out who Rainn was who I had seen in my vision, both Groban and I had seen her, I know this because he had said her name at the exact same time that I had. I stared at my hand, the branded imprint that stared back at me, the symbol of Gaia. A symbol I had no knowledge about, yet here I was, trying to figure out what to do, how to approach the situation. Laya POV I kept myself huddled up against the wall and at this point, I had asked Jake to give me some space, my head was beginning to spin and I honestly felt far too weak to argue with anyone right now. I knew that if he kept coming to close that there was a very good chance that I would lose control and I really didn’t want that to happen. I kept my eyes closed the entire time, I hated what Demetrius was doing by trying to force me to feed on a human, and not just any human, he wanted me to feed on Jake. On top of everything it felt like this baby was sucking the life right out of me minute by minute, I needed to try and keep my mind occupied on something else, like why Ward was trying to go and find the Gaia tribe? I was glad to know that Ward was still alright, I had been so stupid in allowing Dax to see who I truly was, and because of that Groban had done the same. Dax hated shifters way too much to just let this go, I knew that much.

Groban POV I watched Demetrius basically retreating from Laya like her words had scorched him somehow, I turned my head to the side of the bars to possibly catch a glimpse of Laya but I couldn’t see her. I instantly felt anxious and it was driving me to the brink of insanity not being able to hold her right now, the words that she had spoken kept going around in my head over and over again. “Lay,” I spoke softly and tentatively as I stretched my hand around the bars toward her cell. But there was no response, “Talk to me Lay,” I said still holding my hand stretched out for her to take. But again there was no reply, I wanted to feel her, I needed to touch what was mine. Suddenly Jake sighed irritably as he spoke, “I don’t think she wants to talk, maybe just give her some time,” if he could have seen the glare I was giving right now he would have known that he was treading on thin ice, “Jake, what’s wrong with her?” I dema

Groban POV We must have both fallen asleep with our fingers interlocked through the bars, my arm was dead with pins and needles shooting through my fingertips. I moved my hand as I loosened my grip against hers, rubbing gently over her knuckles as I did so. This had been the longest that we’ve sat like this and I knew that she probably needed a break as well, so I gently pulled my hand free from hers, “Hey baby, you go and get some rest. Your arm must be killing you,” I had no real concept of time in here but I knew that we’ve been here for a few days now. It pained me each and every moment Laya was in this fucking place, I knew her, I knew how hard it had been to get her to start feeding on healthy human blood. Not that my blood was at all human but, it had taken a lot to convince her to feed on me and then on the blood banks I provided her. But she never wanted to feed on humans’, I know that has always been something she felt strongly about.

Laya POV My body was shivering, the pain coursing through me was worse than death to me. I couldn’t think straight as I sat against my knees holding onto the bars, just staring after the emptiness I was feeling deep inside. He was gone, no he couldn’t be. The sobs escaping me as the tears kept falling only made the clenching ache in my chest constrict, even more, it was too much for me to bear and as I sat there on the cold concrete floor I felt a numbing feeling crawling through every crevice of my very existence. It’s not a feeling one can describe in words, it’s more something you feel deep inside. It’s a suffocating and agonizing moment of denial and anguish, it’s replaying scenarios over and over in your head until you start driving yourself crazy.
