NYRA’S POV

I sat in the driveway a long time, my hands still shaking on the wheel, and told myself I should just drive. But my phone was inside, charging on the kitchen counter, and some stubborn, practical part of me refused to leave without it. Refused to be the kind of woman who ran off into the night with no way to call anyone if something went wrong.

I went back in.

  • I AM MY STEPBROTHER'S OBSESSION    CONCEALING IT FROM LUCA

NYRA’S POV I stood in front of the bathroom mirror at six in the morning with a face that looked nothing like the one I needed to walk into that office wearing. The bruise along my cheekbone had bloomed overnight into something darker than I expected. Purple shading into a sick yellow-green at the edges. My wrist, when I turned it carefully under the light, showed a matching set of finger-shaped marks I would have to keep covered for at least another week. I stood there a long time just looking at myself. At the wreckage of a face that still had to go sit across a desk from Luca in four hours and give a convincing performance of nothing being wrong. I had slept maybe two hours, curled on the guest bed with the door locked. Richard’s apologies had gone quiet sometime after midnight, when he finally gave up and went to bed himself. I had not spoken to him again. I waited until I heard his breathing even out through the wall, then crept to my own room to shower, moving carefully, cata

  • I AM MY STEPBROTHER'S OBSESSION    AGAIN

NYRA’S POV I sat in the driveway a long time, my hands still shaking on the wheel, and told myself I should just drive. But my phone was inside, charging on the kitchen counter, and some stubborn, practical part of me refused to leave without it. Refused to be the kind of woman who ran off into the night with no way to call anyone if something went wrong. I went back in. He was still in the living room. He had not moved much from where I left him. His head turned fast at the sound of the lock. Something in his face already re-ignited the second he saw me standing there again. “I thought I told you to go.” “I forgot my phone. I’m not staying.” I kept my voice even, moving quickly toward the kitchen. “Of course.” He followed me, close behind, his voice climbing already. “Can’t even manage a clean exit. Typical.” “Richard, I’m just getting my phone.” “Is that what you’re getting? Or are you looking for an excuse to keep managing me a little longer?” I found the phone, unplugged

  • I AM MY STEPBROTHER'S OBSESSION    CONVERSATION WITH RICHARD

NYRA’S POV I drove home slower than I needed to, buying myself minutes I did not have anything useful to do with, rehearsing sentences that kept falling apart the second I tried to finish them in my head. By the time I turned onto our street my hands had gone cold on the wheel despite the warm evening. Some old animal part of me was already bracing for whatever waited inside. Richard’s car was in the driveway. Every light in the house was on. I sat there a long moment before I made myself get out. He was in the living room. Not drinking, which somehow unsettled me more than if he had been. He sat on the edge of the couch, elbows on his knees, staring at nothing. When I came in his head snapped up fast. His eyes were already lit with something that had clearly been building the entire drive home while he waited for me. “There she is.” His voice came out too calm. The calm before something worse. “The dutiful wife. Finally home.” “Richard, can we talk. Properly.” “Oh, now you want

  • I AM MY STEPBROTHER'S OBSESSION    ARE YOU GOING TO TELL ME

NYRA’S POV“Nyra.” My mother’s voice again, sharper this time, cutting through whatever haze the dream-that-wasn’t-a-dream had left behind. “I need you to actually answer me. Right now.”I stood there in the real hallway, my heart still slamming from a version of this moment that had not happened, that existed only behind my own eyes, and understood that I had maybe five seconds left to decide how much of it I was going to let become real. The tile under my feet was the same. The ice machine still hummed. George’s door was still closed. Richard was still here, phone in his hand, that blank look not yet turned into the speech I had just lived through in my head. Luca was still half a step in front of me, coiled, not moving. None of the dream had followed me out. Only the aftertaste of it. The word yes still sitting on my tongue. The image of Luca’s hands. The sound of my own voice pouring everything onto the floor in front of my mother and a man who could not even stand.I swallowed it

  • I AM MY STEPBROTHER'S OBSESSION    THE DREAM

NYRA’S POV“What is happening right now,” my mother said, her voice shaking. “Someone tell me exactly what is happening, right now, outside my husband’s hospital room.”The lights went too white. That was the first wrong thing. The hallway stretched. The floor shone like water. I could still see her mouth, but for a second there was no sound, like the building had put us under. Then everything came out.“Mom.” I stepped toward her, some useless instinct to shield her, though it was already too late. The whole shape of it was already on her face.“Someone answer me.” Her voice cracked down the middle. “Richard. What are you talking about.”“Ask your daughter.” Richard’s voice went ragged. The careful control split open. “Ask her how long she’s been sneaking around with her own stepbrother. Go on, Nyra. Tell her. You’re so good at telling everyone else what they’re ready to hear. Tell her the truth for once.”“Richard, stop.” Luca’s voice dropped low and dangerous. He stepped forward an

  • I AM MY STEPBROTHER'S OBSESSION    RICHARD SEES THEM TOGETHER

NYRA’S POV George moved to a regular room by early afternoon, stable enough now that visitors could stay longer. The waiting room emptied into that hallway limbo of vending machines and hard plastic chairs outside his door. People went in for a few minutes and came back out looking a little less gray. My mother had gone home to shower and change. Richard had disappeared to call Feldman about bankruptcy paperwork that apparently could not wait, even for this. For a rare ten minutes it was just Luca and me sitting outside George’s room. The hallway was quiet except for distant monitors and the squeak of a nurse’s shoes somewhere down the corridor. “He looked better when I went in just now,” Luca said. Exhaustion was carved into every line of his face. “Color’s coming back. He’s talking more.” “That’s good.” I reached over and took his hand without thinking, some old instinct pushing past the caution I had been holding all morning. “You should eat something. You haven’t since you got
