Where the truth lies

The rumor about her pregnancy had already spread across the city like a virus. Many bloggers had published different articles about her. The one that caught people's attention most was ‘Who could have been her mysterious baby's father? Could it be the manager director of the firm?’

Gwendolyn wasn't affected by the rumors, she had already figured out who could be behind everything; it was her ex-boyfriend. Apart from their parents that were there last night, he was the only person she thought would leak out the secret. Perhaps to ruin her career.

While waiting for their family's doctor in his office, her phone rang, about to pick up the call doctor Walton entered. “I hope you're not offended. I have a patient that needs urgent care. Shall we?” He gestured to her to follow him.

She rose from the chair, and before budging an inch from where she was standing she called him back. “Doctor Walton, I'm not pregnant.” She divulged.

Doctor Walton abruptly spun around. Since the door was still open, he shut it and then walked up to where she was standing. “Your father told me you're pregnant. He wants me to confirm how far gone you are.”

“I know he told you something else.” She narrowed her eyes at him.

Doctor Walton shook his head vigorously. He knew what she was thinking, however, she was wrong. “I know what you are thinking but that's against my profession. He only needs me to confirm if you're truly pregnant. No one is going to hurt your baby.” He assured her.

Gwendolyn chuckled which left him to wonder what triggered it. She cleared her throat to explain everything to him because she needed his assistance.

“Can't you tell someone pregnant from someone that isn't, doctor? I'm not pregnant. All I want you to do for me is tell my dad that I'm pregnant.”

“Are you kidding?” She shook her head. “So you lied to your father?”

“I have to lie about the pregnancy to stop a marriage he's planning for me. Doctor, would you allow the same person that once ruined your life to return to your life?”

“Ms. Brook…”

“Please, doctor. I don't want to commit suicide after the marriage that's why I need to stop it now that I have the chance. Help me this time.”

“I'm sorry, it's against my profession. I can't lie.”

“I'm not asking you to lie because I've already lied for you. Just tell my dad I'm pregnant.” She implored him emotionally.

Doctor Walton walked to his swivel chair, he put a hand on the head as he focused his gaze on her. He was nearly speechless for a few seconds, not knowing what to say. Lying was against their profession, but he had been their doctor for twenty years and Gwendolyn had never asked him for a favor before. Nevertheless, there was no way he would lie for her, rather he had a suggestion.

“I'm sorry, I can't help you. Maybe you should talk to your father about it, he may change his mind.”

“You can't change the heart of a man that has been convinced. Thanks, doctor Walton. I guess we're done here.” She took her handbag and then walked out of his office.

While heading out, she didn't care to wear her disguise. Cameras flashed on her at every corner while she was sauntering toward the exit with grace. Even the security couldn't hold the paparazzi back.

‘IS IT TRUE YOU'RE PREGNANT?’

‘WE HEARD THAT YOU HAVEN'T BEEN COMMITTED IN ANY RELATIONSHIP LATELY AFTER YOU ENDED THINGS WITH YOUR EX-BOYFRIEND, IS IT TRUE?’

‘WHO COULD BE THE FATHER OF THE CHILD YOU'RE CARRYING?’

Even though they were flocking around her like birds, she never looked back until she reached where her car was parked. She turned around, removed her sunshade then looked at everyone as they took some pictures of her while bombarding her with questions.

She smiled brightly, showing off her dimples. “I hope you can take photos that would be enough for your next articles.” With that Lilith opened the door, she hopped in the car then the driver drove away.

“How was your meeting with the doctor?”

“Not bad.” She answered with her fingers running through her hair. Although she wasn't sure Doctor Walton would assist her, she wanted to be positive.

“I thought something was wrong with you because of your mood swings, I didn't know it was the pregnancy hormone.”

She looked at her sharply with unbelievable countenance. She presumed Lilith also believed what she read on social media. A faint grin scrunched over her lips as she relaxed in the backseat. She didn't bother to reply because she thought that there was no need to.

The driver drove to the mall where Zayn was. The whole place was restricted to other customers for three hours, the driver hopped out of the car and walked to open the door for her. As he held the door, she alighted while Lilith did the same.

“What are we doing here?” Lilith enquired on their way in.

“Zayn is here.”

With lifted brows, she glanced over. “Who's Zayn?” She was curious because Gwendolyn had never mentioned the name before.

”Can't wait to find out?” She flashed her unusual bright grin as they entered. One of the employers came over and directed them to the VIP section where Zayn was.

“Lonnie,” Gwendolyn exclaimed when he saw him, standing before the change room. Lonnie abruptly spun around, a bright grin clouded his lips as he walked up to her.

“Tinkerbell.” He engulfed her in a warm embrace and pecked her cheeks. “Hi, Lilith.”

“Hi, Lonnie.” She waved at him quietly.

“Where is he?” She inquired, looking around the closet. She couldn't see any of his traces. Lonnie noticed, he gestured to the changing room and shrugged his shoulders.

Shortly after, Zayn stepped out, buttoning up his shirt as he cat walked over to where they were. When a pair of jade-green eyes gazed at him, Gwendolyn became lost again. His wrestler's shoulders were conspicuous which were part of his burly physique. His mariner-blue eyes were orb-round, they darted constantly on everyone in the room. Handsome was an understatement because he swept everyone's gaze away with his luscious appearance.

She was at a loss of words, her eyes dazzled with wonder. Yesterday when she brought him home, she thought she had seen it all but right now he was the most beautiful being she had ever set her eyes on.

“How about this?” Zayn broke the awkward silence in the room.

Lilith gulped hard, his voice was deep yet mellifluous.

Lonnie smiled brightly, giving him a thumbs up. Black seemed to look perfect on him, black shirt and black trousers. “Elegant!”

He shrugged off apathetically. It wasn't like what he said made him feel great. All he wanted was to get out of the place because it was suffocating. In the morning, Gwendolyn invited Lonnie over, he was the only one she could trust with Zayn, apart from the clothes he had on yesterday he didn't have anything else. Gwendolyn couldn't handle shopping along with her tight schedule, she couldn't defy Edward that ordered her to go see their doctor. Lonnie was going to accompany Zayn to the closet while she was going to do what her father wanted.

“The clothes look great on you.” She managed to stammer out a few words.

“I'll have the clothes packed if you're leaving now.”

Gwendolyn shook her head vigorously. “No. Zayn and I are going somewhere. If you need help, Lilith is going to give you a hand.” Lilith attempted to oppose, but she cut her short. “I'm going to call you. I promise you I won't do anything nasty.”

“Of course, you've done that already. About the pregnancy and the father of the child you're carrying, I don't know where I have to start the cleaning.”

“Don't worry, Lilith. I'll handle everything today.”

Puzzled, she arched her brows. She couldn't believe what she just said. Whenever she said she would handle a matter, she always worsen it without getting a shit done.

“Please don't. I don't trust you.”

“Trust me this time.” She held her hands, using her misty eyes to convince her. “Please,” Although Lilith couldn't stop her, at least she could change her mind.

She sighed softly. “Don't make it worse, please.”

She nodded. “Let's go, Zayn.” Lonnie offered him his suit jacket, he laid it on his hand and then tagged behind her. As they arrived at the parking lot, the driver opened the door for them, they hopped in then he drove out of the mall premises.

They arrived at his company within thirty minutes, she received his message on her way to the mall, and he ordered her to come over to the company. Gwendolyn knew there was a chance that she would encounter Austin at the company so that was why she brought Zayn along, she needed him to clear the rumor that had been going viral.

When the car skidded to a halt, they alighted from the car after their chauffeur opened the door.

“This is my father's company. Don't let him spook you out, he won't do anything to you without knowing who you are.”

As if what she said made him feel better, Zayn was as calm as always. He possessed a latent power and always walked with purpose and authority, he didn't seem like someone anything could sway.

The moment they were heading in, another car parked beside their car. When the bodyguard held the door, Austin hopped out of the car. He saw her, standing beside Zayn, his eyes flamed up with anger as he focused his gaze on her. Gwendolyn moved close to Zayn, she entwined their hands while looking at Austin in an irksome manner.

Austin didn't bother to say anything, he concealed his anger before he walked away. She wondered why he didn't do anything but walked away, that was unlike him. Perhaps because they were outside, any mishap would tarnish his reputation.

Zayn moved a hand to their hands then loosened up. “Don't ever touch me without my permission again.” His voice was a bit fierce.

She contracted her lips into a frown. “I only held your hand. You know how many people want that and never get a chance?”

“You see… I'm not like those people. Just don't touch me again without my approval.”

Gwendolyn hissed quietly as she rolled her eyes, she couldn't start a dispute with him, not when everyone was looking. “Let's go in, but I'll hold your hand.” He was going to oppose, but she never gave him a chance as she intertwined their hands and pulled him along when he didn't budge an inch.

While sauntering in, everyone's gaze was on them. Some of them halted, murmuring to each other as they pointed at them. Gwendolyn didn't stop until they reached the elevator, they took the elevator to the top floor where his office was.

Gwendolyn took him along, as they entered his office she wasn't surprised to see Austin in his father's office.

Edward thought she would come alone, he never knew she would bring him along. A frown clouded his lips as he leveled her a glare.

“Why is he here?” He demanded hostilely, sitting opposite Austin on a couch.

“Zayn? Of course, I brought him here because I thought you might want to talk to both of us. I didn't know he'd be here also. What is he doing here?”

“Well… Doctor Walton called,”

Her heart throbbed in her chest like it was going to burst. “I did what you told me.”

“Since you already know what he told me, you should know that nothing is going to stop you from getting married to Austin.”

“But I'm pregnant!”

“You lied, didn't you?”
