Chapter 7

I started feeling lifeless. The absence of my life partner was making me feel lonely.

I decided to live in the pack house rather than our marital home.

My in-laws treated me well. They realized that no one could understand my anguish because I had lost my mate. I lost the light, and my life became darker for the rest of my life.

In my bedroom, I was standing close to the window when Leo's mother and four officials came in.

I was crying silently, so when I noticed them, I quickly wiped them away.

Clara sat on the bed, patting next to her, signaling for me to join her.

I sat next to her and mumbled,

“Mom.”

Clara stared at me for a few moments as if she were deep in thought. She was a woman with a demanding personality. When she used to be the Luna of this pack, people were afraid of her. If anyone refused to comply with her terms and conditions, she punished them harshly.

Leo's father, Wesley, always supported her as she was the love of his life. Bella, his ex-wife, was in between them. So when Bella divorced him, he immediately married Clara.

"I believe one month is enough to keep yourself locked inside this room."

I lowered my head and bit the bottom of my lip. "Mom, I can't forget that night. I...."

I could not let out anything more. My breath got caught in my throat.

Clara stroked my hair and said,

"I have no doubt that you still love my son. He is gone. But the people who were responsible for his death are still alive."

I was taken aback as I lifted my head to look at her.

"W-What?" I whispered.

What did she mean by that? Wasn't it an accident?

"You heard me right. It was not an accident but a pre-planned murder."

My heart was trembling with shock. My mind was unable to accept it. Who was responsible for Leo's death?

If they had not planned to kill him, he would be with me right now!

"Mom, who... who did that?" I inquired with a heavy pain in my chest.

Clara averted her gaze from me, contemplating something. Her gaze turned to the four officials. Their heads were lowered as they remained motionless like statues.

"Why don't you tell her who your suspect is?" Clara said to Beta Gerald.

Beta Gerald was a middle-aged man. He was a strong and loyal person. He looked straight into my eyes and replied,

"We are certain it was planned by his rivals. But the most suspicious man is Daniel Collins. He left that night after the accident happened. He returned when everyone's focus shifted away from Alpha Leo's accident."

My eyes widened.

"Y-Young brother-in-law?" I mumbled about their suspect.

My mother-in-law, Clara, gave me a stern look. "How can you address him with such respect! Do not forget to add "Step" before mentioning him. He is your husband's stepbrother."

Daniel was my stepbrother-in-law. Clara always claimed that he was not Wesley's biological son. Wesley also doubted Bella about it. Bella was a woman who did not accept the accusation and divorced Wesley. She left the pack with her son and joined another pack, where she married the Alpha.

Since their childhood, the two step brothers had been at odds. No one liked seeing each other. People were unaware of their relationship and labeled them as sworn enemies.

Who would have thought one of them would take it seriously and plan to kill the other?

"He snatched my son from me. I curse him for never being happy. I will gather evidence against him and punish him severely," Clara grumbled in anger while gritting her teeth.

I did not know why, but every time I heard that man's name, I felt strange.

I met him a month ago in Leo’s graveyard. He indeed looked at me with hatred. But did he kill Leo?

However, my mother-in-law was very sure. The only thing she wanted to do was rip Daniel's head off.

The thought of Leo's face caused my heart to tighten up inside of me. I used to think it was my fate, but it was actually a planned nightmare.

Clara looked at me and said,

"You have to take over the pack business and run this pack. You are the Luna. You can't be like this forever."

I was surprised. "But I don't know anything about business," I protested.

"Your father-in-law will teach you everything. You are smart and capable. You can do this. Not just for this family, but for Leo and his pack."

I was caught between grief and a sense of responsibility. I needed something to focus on, something to keep me going. Maybe taking over the company was what I needed to do. I also wanted my husband's murderers to die.

I took a deep breath and replied,

“Okay, Mom. I will take over the company and run the pack alone. As the Luna of this pack, I will never let any of my pack members down. I swear to be the strongest woman capable of exacting revenge on those who killed my husband.”
