Ashley's POV

"I'll catch you downstairs," Jayden said, taking a step back and heading down the hall, his broad shoulders vanishing into the hallway.

I was there, my heart thudding against the inside of my chest. I could feel a flush of heat spreading up through me, the feel of being tied to something vital, something bigger than I was. For the first time, I admitted it: I didn’t want to leave the Oakwood Pack. I didn’t want to leave Jayden. I wanted to stay, to weave my life with theirs, with his.

I slipped into my room, my feet light and restless, flipping on the table lamp as a warm golden light bathed the room. I rushed to wash up, splashing water on my face, my head reeling. Guilt gnawed at me—why did I feel this way? Jayden, the one who'd pushed me out of the pack five years ago, had somehow fought his way back into my good books. Gazing into my own face in the mirror, I saw a woman caught in a reckless pull, like some lovesick fool falling for her first mate all over again.

  • I Am The Alpha's Rejected Mate    Chapter 58

Ashley's POVI remained frozen, unable to move, as Jayden readied for fight, his claws ripping out with a cold, slicing motion. His fangs were exposed, elongated and razor-sharp, his yellow-feral eyes blazing that ripped the air."How dare you filthy mutts lay hands on my mate?" he snarled, his eyes scouring from the werewolves who'd touched me to Liam."Easy, Jayden," Zane said to him, his tone soothing, trying to soothe the storm. But too late—Jayden was already attacking Liam, his body a blur of anger."Don't stand there—catch him!" Liam growled, as Jayden's claws raked his face. The two werewolves that had handled me roughly attacked Jayden. Catching a clearer glimpse as they ran past, I saw they weren't members of the Oakwood Pack, as I'd thought. They were taller, harder, their faces rough and wild, like they'd been carved from raw stone. Not even pack members—something else entirely. They attacked Jayden, but one swipe and they were crashing into the table, their bodies banging

  • I Am The Alpha's Rejected Mate    Chapter 58

Ashley's POVI watched as Jayden led the group of men, the guards and warriors of the Oakwood Pack close behind, their eyes sharp and vigilant."Either a high-ranking warrior or a real threat," I muttered to myself, letting out a breath and tearing my attention away.My own issues towered larger. How would John react if I returned to the human world and told him that I would be going back to my first mate? He'd be devastated—outraged, more than likely angry enough to strike out. No, though. John had pieced me back together after Jayden's betrayal so many years before. News of me returning to him would sound in his ears as a bitter mockery.Bewildered, I barely noticed Ella's departure. She flashed by me in a whirl of cognizance, her sure, determined feet devouring distance from the gates to the door of the packhouse. When she whizzed by, she gave me a glance—a burst of intense concentration that looked like it said, You have no idea what's coming for you. I spun away, my gut twisted i

Ashley's POV"Mate!" I exclaimed, my eyes fixed on Jayden. His eyes snapped with a mixture of shock, love, and a pinch of fear. The pack around us froze, their breath held in expectation as is worthy of tradition, waiting for Jayden to respond. The music had stopped, the air heavy with nothing but the ragged breathing of the pack members.Jayden's gaze focused on mine, hard and determined. He moved closer, his words a harsh whisper in my ear. "Mate."Everything else was forgotten at that moment. The crowd, the noise, all of it was forgotten with only Jayden in front of me, his very being keeping me anchored."Mate! Mate!" he yelled again, this time louder, and turned to the crowd with a fierce grin.I grinned, my heart soaring high as I pulled him to me, our lips crashing into a wild, hungry kiss. The crowd erupted, whistles and cheers deafening, rattling the air we breathed. My mind spun in attempting to justify my choices when our lips met. I was a mother of three children and a dev

Ashley's POV"Good morrow, Healer Ashley," a servant said, nearly colliding with me as I left my chamber. He had been heading my way when I emerged. "You've got visitors."It was still early, the sun rising after dinner the night before, which had been late."Visitors?" I questioned, raising my eyebrows. "I wasn't expecting anyone."The servant did not stir, standing there waiting for instructions, his expression vacant."Where are they?" I demanded, advancing. "Are they ill?""They did not appear ill to me," he replied, tilting his head slightly to one side. "I can have them removed if you prefer...""No, don't," I cut in. "Inform them that I will be visiting the guest chamber with them soon."He nodded formally, bowed slightly, and departed.I breathed a languid sigh, still bleary-eyed from the late night. The packhouse was already buzzing with activity ahead of the mating ceremony, two nights from now, on the night of the full moon. Zane had held to his promise—the celebrations wer

Ashley's POV"Didn't you visit last night?" Rachel asked, her brow creasing as she studied my face.I shifted my eyes for a second, my mind racing. "Yes, I visited. I promised your daughter that I'd return with help."Her eyes rested on me, her voice not much above a whisper. "You returned later too, didn't you?" she went on, her voice soft but full of skepticism.I opened my mouth to speak, but a harsh tone came crashing across the air. "That's enough." David was coming in close, his eyes on Rachel. "Your daughter's calling you. Go to her."Rachel's eyes widened, and she sprinted without a word, dashing back into the room, a look of excitement flashing from her.I looked at David, my tone low. "Why'd you interrupt her?"He looked at me, his face stern. "You want the whole Oakwood Pack whispering about some mix-up? It would get us into trouble.""Trouble?" I echoed, my tone firm, eyes narrowing as I glanced at him."Let's stay in the present, Ashley," he said to me, his voice calming.

Ashley's POV "Be careful, Ashley," David instructed us as we reached the shiny car waiting outside. I nodded slowly, my mind whirling. "If this works," I breathed, climbing into the passenger seat, "I'll be home in the human world." "Your children," David began, his tone rich with warmth, "they'll be so happy to see you." "I'll bet they will," I panted, just a whisper, my glance flicking to the glinting hulk of the car. "Nice wheels you've got there, by the way." The glinting surface of the car reflected the sun, sending everything outside it back like a mirror sends things back. The warm interior was inviting-looking, the seats of soft leather molding to the hand, the dashboard casting a dimly blue light that was almost high-tech. "So why did I ride on that wild animal of a horse?" I grumbled, gazing out the window at the landscape passing by. David grinned, his sharp claws glinting in the light as he inserted them into the ignition and turned the key to fire up the en

Ashley's POV"Dad?" Jayden's voice trembled as he gazed at his father, who was sitting up on the bed, healthier than ever."Jayden, my boy!" Zane boomed, leaping off the bed with amazing vigor. His swift approach towards Jayden echoed through the stillness in the room.I didn't believe Zane recovered that fast. My eyes flashed to Jayden, who still hadn't moved, before I crept softly towards the healers standing over him.I nodded slightly, my eyebrows lifted in question. "We're as surprised as you are, Ashley," the oldest healer breathed, his voice so soft."You know, I've got so much to catch up on, son!" Zane cried, his energy bubbling like a child's.“Y-Yes, Dad,” Jayden stammered, his hands shaking as he gently reached for his father. “This… you’re really here. Alive!”I glanced back at Jayden. His eyes were glistening with tears of joy, the same as the gentle light in the room."No tears, son," Zane said, smiling widely. "Thank her!" He pointed straight at me, his finger steady.

  • I Am The Alpha's Rejected Mate    Chapter 51

Ashley's POVI slouched over the table, fingers steady but wild heart, moving the Silverbloom flower in the same motions as I'd done in Alchemy class, old habits being second nature once more. The other healers stood around me, watching in curiosity and cluelessness, picking up on each move I made, not catching the seriousness of what I was doing. My wolf stirred, sensing a faint scent—a werewolf, recently, in the room, which matched Zane's vague message of a visitor. My belly rumbled Ella, her cold stare in the midst of the party flashing in my mind, but I pushed it away, focusing on the flower, my hand trembling. I picked up covert glances at Zane, his emaciated frame slumped over the bed, his face so much like Jayden's that it hurt me—same sharp jaw, same dark eyes. If David had been right and Ella had been playing this game, then Zane and Jayden had both been in her sights, puppets on a string in her game. The thought made my stomach churn, my fingers shake as I crush the flowers
