“You’ve been in there for days, I didn't think you'd like to come,” Ethan’s voice drifted from behind the door.

I flushed, finally twisting the doorknob to enter his room. “I can’t leave you to feel all that by yourself,” I said honestly, closing the door behind me.

As much as I would like to continue cowering in fear of myself in my bedroom, I couldn’t leave it in me to let Ethan be alone under the coming full moon knowing my presence could ease his pain.

But I hadn’t been able to face him knowing he had to shield me once again.

Ethan was sat shirtless on the edge of his wide velvet sheeted bed. Even in the dark, I could see the sweat trailing off his skin in waves.

My eyes widened as I proceeded forward without thinking. “Am I late?” I placed my hand to his forehead to gauge his temperature, standing right between his open legs.

In the five different times I’d come to experience him like this, I’d learnt that he could break out in odd fevers from getting worked up. He was also parti

  • I Am The Alpha   To Be Hunted, To Be Heard

Higan was missing, Becca was missing, and the town had grown wary to the tragedy at the Stark mansion that prompted Alpha Stark to take over the town of Springville. That was all I learnt in the report narrated by Abigail following the events that occurred right after they found me by the edge of the woods at Springville.I'd walked there from where I woke by instinct. It took about a day of nothingness scratching the corners of my brain.Without a home to go to, I simply wandered around the woods listening to the town and its new buzzing patrols. It wasn’t hard to connect the dots from when I was escorted to my old house which was rebuilt.I would have liked to say it was surprising to see the entire town of Springville under lockdown from Ethan’s army but it wasn’t. I’d expected nothing less from him.But it was surprising to hear that Higan managed to escape along with Becca which made killing her more difficult now.No one seemed to be willing to open up about how I left their sig

“You’ve been protected all your life,” she ignored my question to go on, “Even in the moments you suffered. You had arms around you. People who’d die for you. People who did.”A bitter laugh followed bitterly and harshly, “I never had that. And it made me who I am today..”“And you think that justifies this?” I gritted my teeth.Becca clicked her tongue gently. “Harlyn. My sweet darling. Justification is for people who want to be forgiven.”The hollow grew choking the breath out of me.“I don’t need your forgiveness,” she declared. “I don’t want it. I only want you to understand.”My lips parted. The wind blew across my face, and I realized my cheeks were wet. Why was I crying “You’re trying to break me.”“Harlyn?” a voice called out behind me but I ignored it.“No,” she said gently. “I’m trying to shape you.”“Please—”“They say character is forged in the flames of loss and loss that scalds the soul clean. Not sure who said that, been here too long. But the point is, fire peels off a

Higan scoffed away his annoyance, “Or rather,” he proposed, straightening his spine “Your team doesn’t move past this perimeter without my permission. This is still my town.”His mouth rang out with false authority, the kind built on fragile ego. He glanced at his father for reinforcement.Harris bounced his head gravely. “We may owe you a great deal but this is Springville, and you should respect the chain of command.”Ethan didn’t flinch. He stared at them both like they were chess pieces pretending to be kings.“Chain of command,” he repeated dryly. “Interesting term, coming from a man who abdicated in favor of mediocrity.”A few wolves in the back barely held in their reactions as they bared their teeth.Higan’s smirk faltered. “You can insult me all you want, Stark. But you have people in town, people I still hold dominion over. Namely…”His eyes slid again to me. “…your precious girl’s parents.”Something twisted in my stomach, not out of fear, but recognition of his ploy. I kne

The lead vehicle, a bright red truck pulled in with arrogant grace. His pack's cars followed in formation like something out of a low budgeted and heavily corrupted parade. The last to arrive was a matte grey town car.Harris’ matte grey town car. A frown quickly tugged on the top of my head. It was more than Higan. The older man stepped out gradually, with wolves in gear trailing right behind him. His gaze swept the airport compound sweeping past the artillery and the wolves assembling behind us.He appeared displeased.Higan, however, came out as though he was stepping onto a red carpet with squared shoulders a smug grin, and hair tousled into the wind like he expected a camera crew to catch his good angle. His eyes locked on Ethan first, then slid, like sticky oil, to me.His stare barely had an effect on me now. Usually, I would grow prickly and aggravated, now I was just mikdly annoyed by his wandering eyes. Instinctively, I shifted closer to Ethan.“Is it my birthday already?” H

It had been fifteen minutes and I had grown right to the edge of the van’s leather seat. I felt anxious, curious, and more than a little irritated that no one was saying anything to me yet. After our conversation last night and the sheet-tangling events that followed and left me flustered, Ethan and I had woken to Khalid relaying something “urgent.”There’d been no time for lingering in the afterglow of our connection. Just declarations. All Ethan said was “Get dressed. You’ll want to hear this in person.”Now there I was, in a van that rumbled past the same stretch of backroad we’d taken to the airport when we left for New York. Déjà vu, only this time the air wasn’t humming with overwhelming dread and I wasn't looking over my shoulder for a threat I couldn't recognize.Abigail sat beside me, legs crossed, flipping through a file like she was reviewing notes before a meeting. Caleb and Abel were seated across from us with folded arms and sharp gazes.None of them seemed entirely phas
