Chapter 1

Author: Miles Farrow
Victor Ashford instinctively stepped in front of Colette Jennings and her son, shielding them with his body.

There was no mistaking that he was protecting them.

Back when Victor and I worked cases together, he'd done the same thing for me without even thinking. Now, he was protecting another woman.

"Alyssa, have you lost your mind? Are you seriously going to throw away your badge over this?"

While I was distracted, my mentor, George Ryland, knocked my service weapon from my hand. The pain and disappointment in his eyes were unmistakable.

The commotion brought everyone inside rushing out into the yard.

The moment I saw who they were, a chill ran down my spine.

Victor's younger sister, Denise Ashford, was there, and so was Rebecca Lane, my best friend of 20 years.

The two of them immediately moved to either side of Colette, shielding her while they stared at me as though I were dangerous.

Just like that, in the middle of this cozy home, I was somehow the only bad guy.

Splat!

A stream of muddy water hit me square in the chest.

I looked down at the little boy holding the water gun. He couldn't have been more than two or three years old, and his features resembled Victor's.

"Go away, you bad lady! Don't hurt my mommy and daddy!"

Victor immediately crouched beside him and comforted him gently. "It's okay, Noah. Come here."

Watching the two of them together, every bit the loving father and son, made my heart ache.

If my baby were still alive, they would probably be about Noah's age now.

The thought pulled a bitter laugh from me.

"So? Aren't you going to introduce us?" I asked.

Victor pressed his lips together. Guilt flickered across his face, but he said nothing.

I swept my hair aside and exposed the burn scar covering the back of my neck.

"I got this two years after you died. Henry Luther and I fought inside a burning building."

Then, I tugged open the collar of my shirt, revealing the ugly bullet wound in my chest. Blood was still slowly seeping through the gauze over it.

"And this happened last week when we finally arrested him. The bullet missed my heart by inches. I almost died."

My eyes burned despite myself.

Victor looked almost exactly as he had three years ago, handsome and untouched by time, with a beautiful woman standing behind him.

I was the only one who looked as though those three years had torn me apart.

"I haven't slept through a single night since you died. I've nearly gotten myself killed more times than I can count, and all this time, you've been here—"

"Enough!" Victor cut me off.

There was a pleading edge to his voice.

"Alyssa, I know I owe you my life. I'll never forget what you did for me. But can you give me a few more years? Just let me raise Noah until he's old enough to start elementary school. After that, if you still want my life, I'll give it to you. Please."

"The law doesn't work around your schedule."

I forced my tears back and stared coldly at the devoted father standing in front of me.

"You've committed bigamy by marrying another woman while still legally married to me, Victor. You're coming with me."

"You can't arrest Victor!" Colette cried.

She poked her head out from behind him, tears spilling down her cheeks. "Victor didn't commit bigamy because he—"

"Colette, stop!" Victor snapped at her.

Then, he turned back to me, his eyes red and filled with desperation.

"I'm begging you, Alyssa. Let this go. Don't keep digging. You're only going to hurt yourself more if you find out everything."

Before I could respond, Denise pushed through the group and jabbed a finger toward me.

"Why shouldn't she know? Alyssa Thorpe, quit acting like that badge gives you the right to bully everyone around you. Victor and Colette are the ones who are legally married!

"If you hadn't held it over Victor's head that your family adopted us and pressured him into marrying you, he never would've needed to fake a marriage certificate just to appease you. You and Victor were never legally married in the first place!"

Just then, a man's hand came between us and firmly blocked him.Evan had appeared beside me without my noticing. With one small step, he subtly positioned himself between Victor and me."This is a kindergarten, and we're in the middle of morning drop-off. If you keep causing a scene and harassing one of my employees, I'll call the police."Victor had no choice but to back away. His gaze moved between Evan and me, and for a moment, jealousy and pain flashed across his face.In the end, he swallowed whatever he wanted to ask and took Noah inside to finish the enrollment process. From that day on, Victor became a constant presence in my life.He showed up outside the kindergarten every morning without fail. While I worked the entrance, he'd stand at a distance and watch me. When my shift ended, he'd take Noah by the hand and follow several steps behind. He even started copying the things I used to do for him, bringing me fresh, home-cooked meals every day."Alyssa, I made the mu

After I changed into regular clothes, Evan asked me to come to his office. He didn't immediately explain why. Instead, he made a pot of coffee, poured me a cup, and slid it across the desk.I watched the steam rise for a moment before breaking the silence. "Did you run a background check on me?"Evan didn't bother denying it. He met my eyes and nodded."Of course. I'm responsible for more than a hundred children here. I have every employee thoroughly vetted before I bring them on. Judging by the way you fight, nobody moves like that after taking a few weekend self-defense classes."After a brief pause, his tone grew serious."Alyssa Thorpe. Former captain of a criminal investigations unit with the Jorvia Police Department. You had a reputation for cracking some of the department's toughest cases. The rest of the world believes you died in that explosion two years ago."My fingers tightened around the cup.I'd spent two years trying to leave that life buried, and Evan had brough

Victor stiffened.Rebecca stared at him, her voice hardening with every word."You kept saying Alyssa made you feel trapped. You said you wanted someone softer, someone who needed you. But that's just the excuse you gave yourself for wanting two different women."You were perfectly happy taking everything Alyssa gave you while you had her. At the same time, you loved the way Colette depended on you and made you feel like some kind of hero. You wanted both, and it's disgusting."And now that Alyssa is dead, you're standing here acting as if you loved her more than anything. Who do you think you're fooling?"Victor couldn't even raise his head. There was nothing he could say. Rebecca was right. He was the one who had pushed me away when I needed him most. How hopeless must I have felt in those final moments? How much pain had he put me through?Victor's face went deathly pale. Then, without warning, he coughed up a mouthful of blood.Shouts broke out around him, but before any

Half an hour later, everyone was back at the police headquarters. The search-and-rescue captain gently set a dripping evidence bag on the table.Inside was a silver ring, blackened almost beyond recognition by the fire.Victor had bought it for me when we were 18, using the money from his first scholarship. He'd found it at a local market and spent 200 dollars on it.That night by the ocean, he'd slipped the inexpensive ring onto my finger. Blushing, he'd promised that he would spend the rest of his life protecting me.Years later, even after I became the respected captain of a criminal investigations unit, I'd never stopped wearing it. The ring had become badly scratched and worn with age, but I'd always kept it with me as though it were priceless. Now, it was charred beyond recognition, and there was no body attached to it."The van exploded underwater after it went into the river," the rescue captain explained. "We found the ring near the wreckage."We also found a large amo

Victor looked completely lost as an uneasy feeling began to spread through him.The officer stared back at him in disbelief, his eyes still red."Victor, even if your marriage wasn't legally registered, you and Captain Thorpe were living together as a married couple. How could you not know? When you supposedly died three years ago, she was almost three months pregnant."Victor froze. He stared at the officer blankly. His lips trembled, but he couldn't speak."That day, Captain Thorpe came racing back from out of town. The moment she saw the fake body you'd left behind, she started hemorrhaging. She lost the baby. She nearly died, too.""Enough… Stop."Victor cut him off in a hoarse voice, as though he couldn't bear to hear another word.It was too late, though. Everything the officer had said kept replaying in his head.We had once had a child. He had killed his own child. Now, he'd stood by while I was taken away and driven into the river. The realization turned his blood

Victor took one look at Colette's swollen cheeks before turning to me with a venomous glare. My heart sank when I met his eyes.Victor was known for his easygoing temperament. In all the years I'd known him, I'd rarely seen him look at anyone with such contempt.Yet today, because of another woman, he'd given me that look more than once."Alyssa Thorpe, there's no getting through to you. If you're determined to keep coming after Colette, then don't blame me for taking this further."He grabbed my arm and hauled me out of the infirmary, dragging me down the hall and into an interrogation room. Then, right in front of me, he tore up the statement he'd agreed to provide and placed another document on the table. It was a consent form for a psychiatric evaluation.According to the report, years of stress from police work had caused me to become mentally unstable, suffer from delusions, and lose control of my behavior. It also stated that I was voluntarily stepping away from field du
