Chapter 3

작가: Wendy Gill
"You really are a terrible stepdad. No wonder my classmates said your true colors would show sooner or later. I don't need anything from you. Once Dad's back, he'll take me to school every day."

When she mentioned William, her eyes practically sparkled. "Dad is the best person in the world! His breakfasts are a million times better than yours. Once he's back, I'll make Mom kick you out of the house!"

For five years, I had handled everything for her. I took care of her clothes, her meals, her daily necessities, and I even stayed by her side when she was hospitalized. She never said a single word of thanks.

She had barely even met William. They had only spoken a few times on the phone, but a handful of his sweet words were enough for her to come up with a thousand reasons to think he was perfect.

When I saw the hope in Sarah's eyes, I stayed silent. She wasn't going to get what she wanted.

William had been too afraid of struggling to stick around. He abandoned his own daughter just to get divorced, and now, he was back with his own motives. How could he possibly care about her?

However, that wasn't my problem anymore.

Sarah opened the front door and called for the driver to take her to school. I finished my meal and started packing, wiping away five years of memories from the house.

Once everything was packed, a dull ache spread through my stomach. I gritted my teeth, grabbed my suitcase, and headed for the door.

Just then, Clara returned with Sarah and stood squarely in my way.

She lowered her gaze to my suitcase and asked coldly, "Where are you going?"

I instinctively stepped back and said sharply, "Can't you see? I'm leaving."

Her eyes swept across the empty living room behind me. Every vase, painting, and bottle I had bought over the years had been packed or thrown out.

Her face darkened.

"I said it this morning," she snapped. "William doesn't affect your place here. He's at the airport. Did I even mention divorce today? I also told you there's no need to try so hard to get my attention.

"Once the agreement expires, we can pay to extend it. Why are you making a fuss? You're going to buy back all the things you threw out today by tomorrow. I want my home just like it was the last few years."

I looked at her. "Clara, if you're still hung up on your ex, divorcing me is the only way for you to have a future with him."

If she couldn't let go of her ex, why was she angry that I was making way for them?

She yanked the suitcase from my hands. "If I need a future with him, I don't need your generosity."

Sarah pouted and mumbled, "Today I get to see Dad! I don't have to stay with the bad guy!"

Clara brought Sarah over and scolded me. "See? Sarah said you didn't give her breakfast this morning. She was so hungry she ate her classmate's sandwich, and now her lips are swollen and sore.

"Bruce, even if Sarah isn't your biological daughter, couldn't you at least try? Look at her now. How am I supposed to explain this to William?"

No wonder Clara had rushed back with Sarah. She was here to confront me.

I lowered my gaze to Sarah's lips, which were swollen like tiny sausages.

"She's having an allergic reaction," I said.

Clara's eyes widened. "An allergy? To what?"

Even now, she didn't know. Sarah had always had a sensitive stomach and reacted to many allergens. A little redness or swelling was nothing unusual.

When we first got married, the Sterling family was struggling financially, and Sarah often had digestive issues or allergic reactions from eating my food.

I gave a soft smile. "What kind of daydream are you having?"Clara showed up almost immediately. She had clearly learned her lesson and didn't barge in this time. Only with my permission did she walk in behind Gwen. The moment Sarah saw her, she shrank back in fear. "I don't want to go back to that place!"The people behind Clara didn't give her a moment to resist. One of them stepped forward, scooped up Sarah like a wriggling chick, and carried her out.I stared at the scene in surprise. "What's going on?"Clara sat across from me, wearing a complicated expression. "William was sent to prison, and his daughter was placed in an orphanage. She escaped a few days ago, and that's how she ended up here."I let out a small sound of acknowledgment and said teasingly, "Didn't you care a lot about her before? Why not just keep her and raise her yourself?"Clara's face darkened. "I was blind back then. I said those awful things to you because of her. I am sorry."I laughed softly. "The

"Oh my god, am I seeing things? That's an Oceania watch worth tens of millions. Who exactly is this man?""The Oceania set comes as a pair—one large, one small, and both encrusted with diamonds. Word is Ms. Sterling gave the smaller one to Mr. Sawyer. I never expected the larger one to go to this man."The crowd stirred. All eyes turned to me as they waited for my response.I softly said, "I'm sorry. I refuse."The atmosphere at the banquet instantly cooled. Gwen stepped forward beside me, raising her wine glass toward Clara with a teasing smile."Sorry, Ms. Sterling. Mr. Wagner already has a date. You wouldn't want to steal my spotlight, would you?"With that, Gwen grabbed my hand and walked away without looking back.Clara chased me all the way out of the venue. She grabbed my wrist and demanded, "Bruce, in these five years, have you never once felt anything for me? Do you really have to be this cold?"I shook her hand off and replied coldly, "Clara, don't flatter yourself. I

Clara lowered her gaze and kicked Sarah away. "Don't call me that. I'm not your mother."Sarah was knocked to the floor by Clara's kick. She looked hurt and betrayed.Several new security guards rushed into the office and swiftly escorted William and his daughter out together. The office fell silent at once. Clara looked at me and hoarsely said, "Bruce, can we talk?"She only took a seat across from me after I nodded."Bruce, I know William sent you that video. I had been drinking that night and didn't react in time, but I've already kicked him out and made him take his daughter with him."I cut her off calmly. "If you have something to say, say it. Keep it short. I'm busy and still have work to do."Clara pursed her lips. After a moment of hesitation, she finally said, "I am sorry, Bruce."When I heard those three words, I raised my brows slightly. In the five years we were married, this was the first time I had ever heard her say them.It turned out that Clara could apologi

It wasn't until William was gasping for air that Clara released him. He collapsed to the floor, bruised and battered."I'll have someone list every expense your daughter has cost me over the years," Clara said flatly. "You have one week to repay it. If you don't, my lawyer will speak with you."Without another word, she turned and walked away.…When I arrived in Parville, I settled into a two-story townhouse. I divided my money, keeping some for day-to-day operations and using the rest for business investment. With a university degree in finance management, I would have already established my own career if I hadn't been foolish enough to marry Clara. Still, it was never too late to start a business.I was highly motivated. The day after moving in, I started planning and scouting for a shop. A month later, my company was up and running, gradually establishing a foothold in the market.I was so busy that I hardly noticed my secretary, Gwen Beckett, knocking lightly at the office

Clara sat at the dining table, tracing her fingers along the rim of her wine glass. As she thought back to my pale face, a strange sense of unease filled her. When they were nearly done with dinner, William sat down beside her. His intense cologne filled the air around her.Clara frowned as William placed his hand on the back of hers. "Clara, it's getting late. Why don't we go to my place tonight and have a couple more drinks?"Clara pulled her hand away. "Let's do it another time. It's getting late, and I need to take Sarah home."Without giving him a chance to reply, she picked Sarah up and headed home. When they arrived home, I was already gone. The unease in Clara's chest grew stronger. When she saw my messages on her phone, panic set in. She tried calling several times, but each attempt showed that my number was out of service.Just then, the doorbell rang. She hurried to the door and found a delivery courier standing there. Disappointment immediately flashed across her fa

The front door slammed shut with a loud bang. I sat on the couch, smiling bitterly.I had brought up divorce countless times, yet Clara never seemed to take it seriously. In the past, I had loved too deeply and given everything to her and her daughter. That was why they felt secure. They were convinced I would never leave. This time, they had miscalculated. I truly couldn't stay any longer. Whether she signed the papers or not, I was leaving today.I didn't know how long it took before the pain in my stomach slowly faded. At that moment, my phone screen suddenly lit up with a notification. I tapped it and saw a text message from William."You've been Clara's husband for five years. You've enjoyed enough of that life. Now that I'm back, it's time for you to get lost."A video appeared right after. In it, Sarah climbed into the car and gleefully settled on William's lap, calling him "Dad" with a bright, obedient smile. Clara sat beside them, smiling with a softness I had never n
