Chapter 2

Auteur: Heroic Thief
Gavin couldn't stomach my self-righteousness for another second. He stood up, kicked the chair aside, and jabbed a finger right in my face.

He snarled, "You can look forward to the divorce papers!"

Then he stormed out without looking back. I watched him go, and a faint smile tugged at the corner of my mouth.

In my previous life, everything started falling apart about a month ago. It was when Gavin's first love, Brooke Ashton, came back from overseas.

The moment she returned, it was like a switch had flipped in him. Every thought and every ounce of his attention went to her, while I was left on the sidelines, completely invisible.

We'd been planning a wedding, but because of Brooke, it got pushed back indefinitely.

I couldn't keep waiting around forever, so I made up my mind to end things with Gavin and let him be with Brooke.

But then the news broke—Brooke had gotten wasted and trashed a bar. She'd also stolen a bottle of perfume from a department store counter and run a red light.

I went to Gavin, thinking that the best thing for her would be to turn herself in and cooperate. Perhaps they'd go easy on her.

Gavin looked at me coldly. "What the hell are you talking about? Those were all things you did. Are you really that disgusting? Trying to pin your own mess on Brooke?"

I'd frozen, wanting to ask him what he meant by that. Before I could, the victims from all three incidents tracked me down together.

I tried desperately to explain, but every one of them produced surveillance footage. And the person caught on camera committing those acts had my face.

I couldn't defend myself. In the chaos that followed, the mob shoved me to the ground, and I was trampled to death.

Now that I'd been given a second chance, I needed to find out why that surveillance footage showed my face. No amount of doctoring could produce fakes that convincing. Someone had done this to me, and I was going to figure out who.

Since I'd confessed to the perfume theft and shown a cooperative attitude, the police only held me for three days before letting me go.

I walked out of the station and pulled out my phone to check the news. I wanted to see whether this life would unfold the same way—whether someone was already setting me up again.

I hadn't made it very far when I spotted a group of people up ahead, all glaring straight at me. The moment I got close, they swarmed.

"That's her! She's the one who stole the perfume from our store! I got fired because of her! You owe me money!"

"That's her! She smashed up our place and broke every bottle behind the bar. That was hundreds of thousands of dollars worth of liquor!"

The last one was the most worked up, practically shaking. He was the father of the kid who'd been hit in the red-light accident.

"You shameless little bitch, running that red light. My son is still in the hospital. If he ends up with lasting damage because of you, I will make your life hell!"

In my previous life, this was the moment I'd panicked, tripping over myself to explain. But this time, I knew none of it had anything to do with me. So why would I panic?

I kept my voice calm. "None of that was me. I never did any of those things."

The fired store clerk shoved her phone in my face. "Still trying to lie your way out of this? If it wasn't you, then who was it?"

She was livestreaming the whole confrontation. "Everyone watching, take a good look at this face. Stay far away from this woman unless you want your stuff stolen too!"

The others nodded along eagerly. "Yeah, get her on camera! Let's see her try to run from this!"

I was about to move away when I heard Gavin's voice cut through the noise. "Elena, I didn't think you were actually capable of something like this. We're done. You will never set foot in my family's home."

Right beside him, Brooke had her hand wrapped around his arm. "Elena, how could you do something like this?"

Gavin's phone was synced with his digital tablet. If there were evidence on his phone, the device would have it too.I grabbed it and started going through it immediately. The digital tablet did share his photo library, but the only videos in there were the face-swapped versions. The originals were gone. He'd already deleted them. After searching for a while with nothing to show for it, I was starting to feel deflated. Then it hit me. The device could log into his messaging app, and there might be something useful in his conversations.I waited until the middle of the night and opened the app. I knew it would show as an active login on his end, but it was late enough that he was probably asleep.I scrolled through his contacts until I found a group chat I'd never seen before. I tapped in and found it strange. There were only two people in the whole chat, which made no sense for a normal group. After thinking it over, I typed out a message. "Hey, you around?"The reply came fast.

"Sent to you?" I stared at Kevin's parents, caught off guard."That's right. Someone sent us the footage and said our son had been in a car accident. When we tried calling him, we couldn't get through. Then someone else contacted us and said you'd be outside the police station, and told us to find you. So we went.""Do you have any idea who it was?"They shook their heads. "No clue. The video was posted in our neighborhood group chat, and the phone call came from an unknown number."I asked them for the number right away and tried calling it. Just as I expected, it had already been disconnected.Kevin watched me and asked, "Do you know who's behind this?"I nodded. "I have an idea, but no proof."After finishing dinner at Kevin's parents' place, I headed home. The front door was wide open, and I could hear voices inside.I walked in to find Gavin and Brooke standing off to one side, while Gavin's mother sat on the couch, her face twisted with anger."Where the hell is Elena Ch

Gavin and Brooke saw the tide turning and immediately doubled down.Brooke said, "Fine. So it wasn't her. Then find the real person who did it. Why are you dragging us into this?"Gavin clapped his hands. "Exactly. All this proves is that she wasn't the one who trashed the bar. But she admitted to stealing the perfume herself. The officer can confirm that."The store clerk nodded eagerly. "That's right! You got locked up for it. The perfume theft is a done deal. Pay up!"I'd been waiting for exactly that, because I knew Gavin wasn't done trying to pin things on me.I turned to the store clerk and the bar owner. "I know you're both desperate to find the person responsible. But take a good look at my face. Am I really the person you remember?"The store clerk rolled her eyes. "I get hundreds of customers a day. How am I supposed to remember who's who? Don't even try to weasel out of this!"The bar owner shook his head, too. "My place is way too dark. I couldn't make out who was ca

All eyes turned to the police officer. He pulled out his phone on the spot and called his colleague who'd been keeping watch over me at the station."Was Elena Chambers in the station the entire time these past few days?""Of course she was. She was a model detainee, honestly. Great attitude, very cooperative, did whatever we asked without complaint. She only made one phone call, and that was it. She stayed put and didn't cause a single problem."The officer's words silenced the crowd again. I seized the moment and said, "If you still don't believe me, you can ask the officer for the station's surveillance footage from the past three days. You trust the footage on your phones, so you should trust the footage from a police station too."The group huddled together, talked it over, and nodded. They'd go to the station and review the footage together.Meanwhile, Gavin and Brooke were sweating. The situation had spiraled completely beyond their control, and they knew there was no way

The elderly couple was the only exception. They stared at the man for a long moment, then burst into tears."Son, you're okay?"They rushed forward and threw their arms around him, checking him over from head to toe. Apart from a twisted ankle, he didn't have a scratch on him."Mom, Dad, I'm fine. The person who hit me wasn't Elena Chambers. Remember the coworker I told you about, the one who always had my back at the company? That's her."In my previous life, I had no idea the person Brooke had hit with her car was Kevin Hull, a colleague who'd started at the company the same time as me. Back then, I hadn't founded the company yet and was a complete nobody. By the time I found out, it was already too late.So while I was still sitting in my cell, I'd called Kevin and warned him to be careful, that a car was going to run a red light and hit him.Kevin took me at my word. When the moment came, he'd nearly been struck by a car blowing through the intersection. But because he dodged

The police officer's words shut everyone up. They all just stood there, stunned.I seized the opportunity immediately. "See? You might not believe me, but you believe the officer, right? I've been sitting in the station for the past three days. How could I have possibly been out doing any of this?"The victims looked at each other, clearly thrown off."But the surveillance footage is right there! It's clearly you, not anybody else!"I kept my composure. "Surveillance footage can be faked. AI face-swapping exists. For all you know, the footage you have is fabricated by the real culprit."As I spoke, I glanced over at Gavin and Brooke. A flash of unease crossed both their faces. The tide in the livestream comments turned instantly."Hold on, it really wasn't her? How was she supposed to commit crimes from inside a police station?""Exactly. You come at someone with fake evidence and think that's okay? That's messed up.""I never bought it from the start and didn't say a single b
