Chapter 3

Auteur: Heroic Thief
My gaze drifted over to Gavin's side, where the real culprit stood looking at me with open disgust.

I rolled my eyes and turned to the crowd. "If you're all so sure that it was me, you'd better have some proof. Otherwise, what are you basing this on?"

The others let out a cold laugh. "We knew you'd say that. If we hadn't checked the surveillance footage, we really would've let scum like you walk free."

One of them held up a phone and shoved a video right in my face. I stared at the footage, and sure enough, the person on screen was me. I honestly hadn't expected them to still have it this time around.

The person then held the video up to the livestream, and the comment section erupted immediately.

"She was so calm just now, I actually thought they had the wrong person. But they've actually got the footage. This woman's probably a serial thief!"

"Got slapped in the face with evidence, huh? Let's hear what excuse she's got now."

"Call the police! Get her arrested! Society doesn't need trash like this!"

I looked past all of them and let my eyes settle on Gavin and Brooke. Maybe it was my imagination, but I could've sworn I caught a flicker of satisfaction on both their faces.

I'd thought spending three days in custody would've been enough to stop them from framing me again, but clearly I was wrong.

With the surveillance footage backing them up, the victims grew even bolder and closed in on me with their hands out.

"Elena Chambers, pay up! I got fired from the department store because of you. That perfume you stole? I had to cover the cost out of my own pocket. You owe me for the perfume and my lost wages. A few thousand dollars should cover it!"

The bar owner jumped in next. "Yeah, and what about me? Do you have any idea what those bottles you smashed were worth? That was my entire collection, built up over years, over 500 thousand dollars worth. Pay up!"

Then there was the elderly couple. Their son had been hit by a car and was still lying in a hospital bed.

The old man pointed at me, shaking with fury. "I don't care about anything else. If something happens to my son, you're paying for it with your life!"

"That's right!" the old woman added. "If our son doesn't recover, you couldn't pay us enough even if you had 100 million dollars!"

The crowd was getting out of control. I cleared my throat. "Everyone, please calm down and hear me out!"

I pointed at Gavin and Brooke, who'd been standing off to the side, enjoying the show. "The person who did all of this isn't me. It's her, Brooke Ashton.

"She's the one behind everything. None of it has anything to do with me. Please believe me!"

The words had barely left my mouth before Gavin stormed in, furious. "Still denying it? The evidence is right there, and you're trying to pin this on Brooke? Are you even human?"

Brooke's eyes welled up with tears, her face the portrait of wounded innocence. "Elena, if you can't afford to pay them back, I can even lend you the money. Why are you trying to drag me into this?"

The livestream camera swung over to capture Gavin and Brooke perfectly on cue, and the comments flooded in with sympathy.

"There's no way that pretty lady's the culprit."

"Has this woman lost her mind? She's just lashing out at random people now."

"She's vicious. She's got hard evidence against her, and she's still trying to frame someone else. Imagine what she'd pull if there wasn't any proof."

Just then, the wail of a police siren cut through the noise.

A squad car pulled up nearby, and the same police officer who'd processed my case stepped out. "We got a call about a suspect at the scene."

Everyone pointed at me in unison. "It's her!"

The officer blinked in surprise. "Elena Chambers? Didn't I just release you? How are you a suspect again?"

Gavin's phone was synced with his digital tablet. If there were evidence on his phone, the device would have it too.I grabbed it and started going through it immediately. The digital tablet did share his photo library, but the only videos in there were the face-swapped versions. The originals were gone. He'd already deleted them. After searching for a while with nothing to show for it, I was starting to feel deflated. Then it hit me. The device could log into his messaging app, and there might be something useful in his conversations.I waited until the middle of the night and opened the app. I knew it would show as an active login on his end, but it was late enough that he was probably asleep.I scrolled through his contacts until I found a group chat I'd never seen before. I tapped in and found it strange. There were only two people in the whole chat, which made no sense for a normal group. After thinking it over, I typed out a message. "Hey, you around?"The reply came fast.

"Sent to you?" I stared at Kevin's parents, caught off guard."That's right. Someone sent us the footage and said our son had been in a car accident. When we tried calling him, we couldn't get through. Then someone else contacted us and said you'd be outside the police station, and told us to find you. So we went.""Do you have any idea who it was?"They shook their heads. "No clue. The video was posted in our neighborhood group chat, and the phone call came from an unknown number."I asked them for the number right away and tried calling it. Just as I expected, it had already been disconnected.Kevin watched me and asked, "Do you know who's behind this?"I nodded. "I have an idea, but no proof."After finishing dinner at Kevin's parents' place, I headed home. The front door was wide open, and I could hear voices inside.I walked in to find Gavin and Brooke standing off to one side, while Gavin's mother sat on the couch, her face twisted with anger."Where the hell is Elena Ch

Gavin and Brooke saw the tide turning and immediately doubled down.Brooke said, "Fine. So it wasn't her. Then find the real person who did it. Why are you dragging us into this?"Gavin clapped his hands. "Exactly. All this proves is that she wasn't the one who trashed the bar. But she admitted to stealing the perfume herself. The officer can confirm that."The store clerk nodded eagerly. "That's right! You got locked up for it. The perfume theft is a done deal. Pay up!"I'd been waiting for exactly that, because I knew Gavin wasn't done trying to pin things on me.I turned to the store clerk and the bar owner. "I know you're both desperate to find the person responsible. But take a good look at my face. Am I really the person you remember?"The store clerk rolled her eyes. "I get hundreds of customers a day. How am I supposed to remember who's who? Don't even try to weasel out of this!"The bar owner shook his head, too. "My place is way too dark. I couldn't make out who was ca

All eyes turned to the police officer. He pulled out his phone on the spot and called his colleague who'd been keeping watch over me at the station."Was Elena Chambers in the station the entire time these past few days?""Of course she was. She was a model detainee, honestly. Great attitude, very cooperative, did whatever we asked without complaint. She only made one phone call, and that was it. She stayed put and didn't cause a single problem."The officer's words silenced the crowd again. I seized the moment and said, "If you still don't believe me, you can ask the officer for the station's surveillance footage from the past three days. You trust the footage on your phones, so you should trust the footage from a police station too."The group huddled together, talked it over, and nodded. They'd go to the station and review the footage together.Meanwhile, Gavin and Brooke were sweating. The situation had spiraled completely beyond their control, and they knew there was no way

The elderly couple was the only exception. They stared at the man for a long moment, then burst into tears."Son, you're okay?"They rushed forward and threw their arms around him, checking him over from head to toe. Apart from a twisted ankle, he didn't have a scratch on him."Mom, Dad, I'm fine. The person who hit me wasn't Elena Chambers. Remember the coworker I told you about, the one who always had my back at the company? That's her."In my previous life, I had no idea the person Brooke had hit with her car was Kevin Hull, a colleague who'd started at the company the same time as me. Back then, I hadn't founded the company yet and was a complete nobody. By the time I found out, it was already too late.So while I was still sitting in my cell, I'd called Kevin and warned him to be careful, that a car was going to run a red light and hit him.Kevin took me at my word. When the moment came, he'd nearly been struck by a car blowing through the intersection. But because he dodged

The police officer's words shut everyone up. They all just stood there, stunned.I seized the opportunity immediately. "See? You might not believe me, but you believe the officer, right? I've been sitting in the station for the past three days. How could I have possibly been out doing any of this?"The victims looked at each other, clearly thrown off."But the surveillance footage is right there! It's clearly you, not anybody else!"I kept my composure. "Surveillance footage can be faked. AI face-swapping exists. For all you know, the footage you have is fabricated by the real culprit."As I spoke, I glanced over at Gavin and Brooke. A flash of unease crossed both their faces. The tide in the livestream comments turned instantly."Hold on, it really wasn't her? How was she supposed to commit crimes from inside a police station?""Exactly. You come at someone with fake evidence and think that's okay? That's messed up.""I never bought it from the start and didn't say a single b
