Chapter 6

Penulis: Hyacinth
Lucian came to the west cabin the next morning.

“I’m leaving for the northern border,” he said. “I’ll be gone a few days.”

His gaze dropped to my bandaged hands, then moved away.

For a moment, neither of us spoke.

He reached into his coat and placed a small jar beside the door.

“The healer made this. It’s the strongest ointment we have.”

I picked it up. “Thank you.”

Lucian remained in the doorway, as if he were waiting for me to say more. Perhaps he expected gratitude. Perhaps he wanted me to understand that bringing medicine meant he cared, even if he had been the one to send me here.

I gave him nothing else.

At last, he turned and walked down the gravel path.

I watched until he disappeared between the trees.

Then I set the ointment on the windowsill beside an old hunting knife. My father had given me the knife years ago, before I came to Bloodmoon.

I ran my thumb over the worn handle and slipped it inside my coat.

By the following morning, a rumor had spread through the compound.

Before the Moon Goddess named Lucian as my fated mate, I had supposedly been involved with a young warrior from the north. Some claimed we had been days away from choosing each other. Others said I kept a handmade wrist guard he had given me and stared at it whenever Lucian was gone.

The details changed each time the story was repeated.

That did not matter.

By noon, everyone in Bloodmoon was talking about the man I had allegedly loved before their Alpha.

Seraphina summoned me that afternoon.

“You have some nerve,” she said when I entered the hall. “Lucian has been gone for one day, and the whole compound is talking about your former lover. Were you so desperate for a man that you couldn’t even wait for your Alpha to cross the border?”

I straightened my back. “A rumor isn’t evidence.”

“Isn’t it?”

She crossed the room until her face was inches from mine.

“People have seen the wrist guard. They know it isn’t Bloodmoon work. When Lucian returns, I’ll make you tell us who gave it to you.”

“Lucian won’t punish me.”

Seraphina laughed.

Then she grabbed my hair and jerked my head back.

“Why? Because you gave birth to his children? Do you honestly think that means he cares about you?”

Her fingers tightened.

“I bled beside him while you were still filling journals with his name. I took silver meant for his heart. He looks at you and sees a useful bloodline. A body that can give him heirs. Nothing more.”

I waited until she finished.

Then I smiled.

“I would never compare myself to what you and Lucian survived together.” My voice remained calm. “But I found something interesting in the old succession records.”

Her grip loosened slightly.

“Lucian’s grandfather fought beside his Luna to claim this territory. When he was wounded, she kept the pack alive through an entire winter. Their bond became a legend in the north.”

Seraphina’s eyes narrowed.

“Years later, he brought home another woman. She gave him two sons. He placed one under the Luna’s name, just as you did with mine.”

I watched the understanding reach her.

“When the second son challenged the Luna’s biological child for the Alpha title, the pack nearly tore itself apart. The elders exiled the other woman, but it didn’t save the Alpha’s marriage. His Luna never forgave him.”

Color drained from Seraphina’s face.

“History has a way of repeating itself,” I said. “Even legendary love can rot when children and succession are involved.”

My gaze dropped briefly to her stomach before returning to her face.

“And both of Lucian’s children are mine.”

Her hand fell from my hair.

“Maybe he’ll decide he should check on their mother once in a while.”

“Shut up!”

Her scream rang through the hall.

Every guard turned toward us.

“Lock her in the west cabin. Board every door and window. No food. No water. No one goes near her until she crawls out and begs me for mercy.”

Two guards seized my arms.

I did not resist.

They dragged me across the gravel and through the dead grass, then threw me into the cabin. The door slammed behind me.

A wooden bar dropped into place.

Then came the first strike of a hammer.

Nails drove through the frame one after another until there was no way to open the door from inside.

Night fell.

The compound went quiet.

A dark figure moved past the back of the cabin.

A moment later, flames erupted along the outer wall.

Heat scorched my skin. Thick smoke poured through the cracks, burning my throat and filling my eyes with tears.

“Fire!” someone shouted outside.

As the warning cries spread through the compound, I smiled through my tears.

The flame caught at once.

Fire raced along the oil and climbed the dry wooden wall. Smoke pushed through the cracks within seconds. Flames rolled across the ceiling.

“Fire!” someone shouted outside.

The pack alarms began to ring. Guards ran toward the west grounds, but by the time they reached the cabin, the roof was already collapsing.

No one could get inside.

The next morning, Lucian was reviewing patrol reports at the northern outpost when his Beta burst into the room.

The man’s face was gray.

“Alpha, there was a fire at the compound.”

“Riona is dead.”

One year later, the border stones between Silvercrest and Bloodmoon were replaced. The new ones bore the emblems of both packs and the terms of the peace agreement. Neither side could move warriors across the border without written notice, and no child could be transferred without the consent of both legal parents. The final provision had been written in my name.I stood beside the northern road while the last stone was lowered into the earth. Kael watched from several steps away, his hand resting over the scar beneath his coat. Silver had left two pale lines across his side. He still felt pain during cold weather, though he denied it whenever I asked.Cassian ran toward us with a padded practice blade in his hand. "Kael said he would teach me how to block.""Kael also said you had to finish your lessons first.""I finished most of them."Kael folded his arms. "That is not what we agreed."Cassian looked at me for support. I raised an eyebrow, and he sighed with the misery of a child s

Kael survived both wounds, but the silver had entered his blood. For three days, the healers kept him in a private treatment room infused with cedar and mountain sage. They surgically removed the poisoned tissue, filtered the silver from his blood, and forbade anyone from visiting him.I asked for news every few hours. Each time, the answer was the same. "He is alive. He needs rest."My son did not ask about Kael. He barely spoke to me at all. His name was Rowan. I had whispered it to him once at the Bloodmoon gate, but Seraphina had called him Cassian since the day she took him. In Silvercrest, everyone used the name he knew.On our first night together, he refused to sleep in the room beside mine. "I want my mother," he said. I was holding Nova near the fire. The words hurt, but I did not correct him."I know.""Seraphina always stays until I fall asleep.""Then I will stay.""You are not her.""No. I am not."He stared at me, waiting for anger. Perhaps he expected me to tell him tha

Silvercrest received Bloodmoon's emergency mobilization alert before sunrise. Kael entered the healer's room while I was changing my bandages. "Bloodmoon claims we attacked their nursery and took the children."My fingers stopped. "Where are Lucian's soldiers?""Gathering near the northern road. They have not crossed the border."A Vale scout appeared behind him. "Traffic cameras recorded a Bloodmoon transport van leaving the closed northern road. Its tracking signal disappeared near the old border stronghold."I knew the place. Bloodmoon had abandoned the reinforced compound years ago. "My children are there."Kael looked at my father. "I'll take twelve warriors and confirm it.""I'm going with you.""You are still healing.""I did not survive the fire so someone else could bring my children home."Kael held my gaze for a moment, then handed me a combat knife. "You decide how far you can go. I'll match your pace."We followed the van's tire tracks along an overgrown service road. Near

The Bloodmoon elders were waiting when Lucian returned from the border. They filled the council chamber before he arrived, speaking over one another about the closed northern road and the warriors gathering beneath Silvercrest banners.Elder Garrick struck his fist against the table. "The Vale family has withdrawn its guards, our merchants cannot reach the northern settlements, and Silvercrest has three hundred warriors at the border. We cannot allow one woman to hold the pack hostage."Lucian removed his coat. "That woman gave birth to both of our heirs.""She is also your fated mate. Bring her back under guard. Once she is inside Bloodmoon territory, her father will not risk attacking us."Several elders voiced their agreement."No one will force her back into this territory."Garrick stared at him. "You would surrender two heirs because she has become emotional?""I said no." The elders lowered their eyes, but their anger remained. "The children stay in Bloodmoon until I decide ho

The Silvercrest healer kept me in bed for four days. The wolfsbane had suppressed my wolf but slowed the healing of every injury. The wound from Nova's birth had reopened during the escape, and the cuts across my palms had become infected.Kael visited each morning. He never stayed long and never asked questions I was not ready to answer. On the fifth day, he entered with my father. My father stopped just inside the room. Then he crossed the floor and wrapped both arms around me. "I thought you were dead." His voice broke against my hair."I'm sorry."He pulled back and looked at the bandages around my hands. "Why did you never tell me?""Your enemies were waiting for a reason to remove you from the council. The northern border was under attack, and Lucian's protection was the only thing keeping them back.""I would rather have lost every title than let you endure this alone.""I know that now."My father sat beside the bed and listened while I told him everything. When I reached the q

Lucian's car sped through the Bloodmoon gates before midnight. Smoke still hung above the western grounds where the old cabin had collapsed into a blackened pit. He was out of the vehicle before the engine had fully stopped."Where is she?"His Beta followed him toward the ruins. "The roof collapsed before the guards could break through. The healer is searching the remains."Lucian stared at the burned frame. The windows had been covered with planks, iron nails still protruding from the surviving wood. "Why were the windows sealed?"Seraphina stood nearby with their daughter in her arms, their son clinging to her dress. "She needed discipline. I ordered the guards to confine her until you returned.""You locked her inside and sealed every exit?""I did not start the fire.""That was not my question."Seraphina shifted the baby against her chest. "She humiliated me in front of my own guards. She suggested you would abandon me for the mother of your heirs. I had to remind her who the Lun
