Chapter 4

Autor: White Bean Sprout
A sharp cracking sound rang out as the watch face shattered into pieces.

It was the only thing my grandfather had ever left me.

Something inside me finally snapped. I spun around and punched William square in the face.

"Touch me again and see what happens!"

The moment he took that punch, William lost it completely.

Seeing her son get hit, Sharon lunged at me at once. Her long, sharp nails clawed viciously at my face. I was not prepared as searing pain ripped across my skin as blood streaked down my cheek.

She did not stop there.

Like a rabid animal, she clung to me, scratching and biting wildly.

"You ungrateful thing raised without parents! How dare you lay a hand on my son?! I'll fight you to the death today!

"You hit my boy? I'll make you pay with your life!"

Hank spat on the ground with venom.

"A heartless beast like you doesn't deserve to be part of the Shephard family! We took you in out of kindness, and this is how you repay us? Look at you, poor and pathetic!"

Lily pulled out her phone and started snapping photos of the red handprint on William's face.

"I've got proof! Everyone, come see how rich people pick on their poor relatives! I'm posting this online. Let's see how you survive after your reputation is ruined!"

While I was being restrained, Sharon shot her son a meaningful look.

"Smash the car. Teach this ungrateful brat a lesson for looking down on poor relatives."

I shoved Sharon away and spat coldly, "Deliberate destruction of property on a large scale is enough to put you behind bars for years. You'd better think carefully about what you'll say once the police arrive."

My words finally pushed Hank over the edge.

"I've been too lenient with you, huh? Looks like you haven't learned your lesson!"

Sharon rushed forward again, raising her hand to slap me.

"You idiot! How dare you threaten us?!"

I caught her wrist and flung her aside with force.

The earlier scratches were only because I had been caught off guard.

I would not let them touch me again.

Sharon crashed to the ground and immediately began wailing, rolling around like a tantrum-throwing child.

Hank completely lost control.

"This is outrageous! You hit my wife!

"Smash it! Smash that damn car to pieces! I wouldn't want that cursed thing even if you gave it to me for free!"

At his command, William rushed to his own battered domestic car nearby, popped the trunk, and pulled out a massive pipe wrench.

Lily lit up with excitement. She dug a bottle of bright red nail polish out of her bag, twisted it open, and splashed it across my car's hood.

Hank did not hold back either. He raised the wrench and brought it down hard on the windshield.

I spoke calmly, icy cold.

"The car cost three million and two hundred thousand dollars after adding on all options. I also bought full coverage insurance. You might want to think twice."

Hank hesitated mid-swing.

However, Sharon shrieked from the ground, laughing hysterically.

"Hahaha! Who are you trying to scare? Three million dollars in game currency? Do you even know what three million means? Stop bragging!"

The hesitation vanished from Hank's face.

The next second, the wrench slammed down. Cracks spread across the glass like a spiderweb.

In no time, the brand-new car was completely wrecked.

Sharon did not join in the destruction. Instead, she took advantage of the chaos, slipped around to the shattered window, and reached inside, rummaging through the compartments.

When she pulled her hand back out, she was clutching an emergency wallet my mother had kept in the car. Greed shone all over her face.

I was about to stop her when a loud, commanding voice echoed from the garage entrance.

"Police! Nobody move! Put everything down now!"

The prison authorities took the matter very seriously. As a result, William was reclassified as a high-risk inmate. Every aspect of his behavior, including his communications and visits, was placed under strict surveillance. He had intended to use one final act of madness to threaten me. Instead, he personally added another heavy lock to an already hopeless path toward sentence reduction.By digging his own grave, he completely erased any possibility of ever leaving those walls early. From that day on, I never received another message from him or from any of them.A clown trapped in his own fantasies and resentment no longer deserved even a single second of my life.…My wedding was held on a sun-drenched afternoon. It was grand, yet warm.During the ring exchange, my father stepped onto the stage and placed a set of luxury car keys into my hand.Smiling, he said, "Francis, this car is yours. Lily became infamous overnight. No one would hire her, and no family dared to propose marriage. The double blow, public scorn and relentless gossip, broke Lily's mind. She began muttering to herself, speaking nonsense no one could understand, lost in a world of her own.[Mr. Shephard, we failed to raise our daughter properly. Our entire family owes you an apology. This is the first sum of money my husband and I managed to scrape together over the past two years by living frugally and borrowing from relatives. It isn't much, only five thousand dollars, but please accept it. Even if we have to sell everything we own, we will do our best to repay what we owe you.]That was written by Lily's parents at the end of the letter. As expected, a thick bundle of cash slipped out of the envelope. It was neatly bound with a rubber band, mostly ten-dollar and twenty-dollar bills, with only a few hundred-dollar notes on top.It was obvious how hard they had worked to gather it.I stared at the

Lily faced the chaos with nothing more than a cold sneer as she scoffed, "A bunch of delusional idiots. They got exactly what they deserved."The judge struck the gavel several times, issuing stern warnings before the courtroom finally quieted and the farce was brought to a halt.In a solemn, heavy atmosphere, the final verdicts were read aloud."The defendant, Hank Shephard, is convicted of intentional destruction of property and intentional assault. For multiple offenses combined, he is sentenced to seven years of fixed-term imprisonment.""The defendant, Sharon Kass, is convicted of theft and intentional assault, and is sentenced to three years of fixed-term imprisonment.""The defendant, William Shephard, who played a primary role in the joint crime, is convicted of intentional destruction of property and intentional assault, and is sentenced to five years of fixed-term imprisonment.""The defendant, Lily Hansen, is convicted of attempted fraud and defamation, and of inciting

On the day of the hearing, Lily's parents, along with every distant relative they could gather from their hometown, showed up outside the courthouse. They held up white banners with bold black text painted across them.[Heartless tycoon drives unborn child to death! Return my daughter's innocence!]Facing the swarm of reporters who had rushed over after hearing the news, they wailed and sobbed, performing their grief with theatrical intensity, tearfully accusing me of destroying their daughter's entire life.Just as their act reached its most dramatic moment, my lawyer stepped out of the courthouse. He did not say a word. Instead, he gestured calmly to the staff, who wheeled a massive display screen to the front entrance. The screen lit up, and the first video began to play.It was the full, high-definition surveillance footage from the underground parking garage, clear and undeniable. The footage of their entire family prying open my car, hurling insults, surrounding and beati

I made my position clear."I'm giving up insurance compensation. I will personally file a criminal case with a civil claim against Hank, William, Lily, and the others."I demand full compensation for the vehicle's purchase price of three million and two hundred thousand dollars, as well as damages for emotional distress and all medical expenses."Not long after, my lawyer's formal notice reached the detention center. When the Shephard family saw the lawsuit amount of three million and two hundred thousand dollars, Sharon's eyes rolled back. She collapsed on the spot, completely terrified.William tried every possible way and finally managed to borrow a phone inside the detention center. The moment the call connected, his voice broke into sobs."F-Francis, my brother! I was wrong! It was all my parents' idea, and Lily's! I was forced into it! The police quickly brought the scene under control. However, the moment Hank's family saw the uniforms, not only did they show no fear, they immediately launched into a shameless performance to twist the story.Sharon dropped herself onto the icy ground with a thud, kneeling and slapping her thighs as she wailed at the top of her lungs.Pointing at the bloody scratch marks Hank had left on my arm, she accused me tearfully, telling the officers how I, a 'rich relative', had used my power to pick on them and even assault an elder.William clutched his face, a clear red handprint stamped across his cheek, shrinking behind Lily like a frightened child.Lily held her phone up high. On the screen was footage of me pushing William away just moments earlier. She shrieked at the police, "Officer, he attacked my fiance first!
