Chapter 3

Autor: White Bean Sprout
The very next second, my phone rang.

It was an unfamiliar number.

"Is this Francis Shephard?"

A young woman's voice came through the line.

"I'm Lily Hansen, William's fiancee."

Her tone was nothing like William's usual politeness.

"I heard you refused to lend the car?"

I replied calmly, "That car belongs to the company. I don't have the authority to lend it out."

She let out a cold laugh.

"Don't give me that excuse. I'm not as easy to fool as William. The child in my belly carries the Shephard family blood.

"If you won't even provide a wedding car and ruin my marriage, then I won't keep this baby either. When that happens, can you bear the blame of driving your own family to death?"

Her voice dripped with threat.

I responded, "Are you using an unborn child to blackmail me? That's your child, not a bargaining chip. Whether you give birth or not has nothing to do with me."

I did not give her another chance to speak. I hung up and immediately blocked the number.

To avoid further trouble, I blocked the entire family as well.

I thought that would be the end of it.

However, the next day, a weekend, I had plans to go fishing in the suburbs with a friend.

Carrying my fishing gear, I walked into the underground garage.

When I reached my parking spot, I froze.

Three people were standing by my car.

It was Hank, Sharon, and a young woman I did not recognize.

My heart sank. I tightened my grip on my phone and hurried over.

Only when I got closer did I see clearly.

The woman was leaning against the hood of my car, striking poses and taking selfies.

Hank was holding a thin metal wire, struggling to poke it into the crack of the car door.

They had not noticed me yet and were chatting among themselves.

"Dad, can you do this or not? You've been poking at it forever."

"Don't rush me. These luxury car locks are tricky. I should've brought a hammer."

Rage surged through me.

I stormed forward and shouted, "What are you doing?! Stop right now!"

The woman frowned when she heard my voice.

"Who are you, yelling at us like that? Do you have no manners?"

I was so angry I almost laughed.

"Step away from my car immediately. You're attempting theft. I'm calling the police right now!"

Sharon rolled her eyes at me.

"You child, how can you talk like that? We're family. This is Lily, William's future wife. We're just checking out the wedding car. What theft are you talking about?"

I did not want to waste another word on those unreasonable people. I pointed straight at the security camera on the garage ceiling.

"Get out. Now. Once the police arrive, none of you are leaving."

Sharon was about to start making a scene when Lily raised a hand and stopped her.

She sneered, "Call them. Go ahead. I'd love to see whether the police care about family matters."

Hearing that, I did not hesitate. I unlocked my phone and started dialing.

"Hello, officer? This is Santos Residential Area, B2 section, parking spot G-07. Someone is trying to break into my car. They may be carrying tools that could be used as weapons. Please…"

Before I could finish, a hand came from the side and slapped my phone to the ground.

"You fool! You actually called the cops?!"

I turned my head and saw that the one who knocked my phone away was Hank.

The fury boiling in my chest was beyond control.

Before I could even bend down to pick up my phone, William appeared out of nowhere.

He shoved me hard against the car.

"Did you really call the police? Are you looking for death?!"

My back slammed painfully into the car door, and the watch on my wrist struck the metal with a sharp knock.

The prison authorities took the matter very seriously. As a result, William was reclassified as a high-risk inmate. Every aspect of his behavior, including his communications and visits, was placed under strict surveillance. He had intended to use one final act of madness to threaten me. Instead, he personally added another heavy lock to an already hopeless path toward sentence reduction.By digging his own grave, he completely erased any possibility of ever leaving those walls early. From that day on, I never received another message from him or from any of them.A clown trapped in his own fantasies and resentment no longer deserved even a single second of my life.…My wedding was held on a sun-drenched afternoon. It was grand, yet warm.During the ring exchange, my father stepped onto the stage and placed a set of luxury car keys into my hand.Smiling, he said, "Francis, this car is yours. From now on, drive wherever you want. Live the life you choose."The applause was th

Lily became infamous overnight. No one would hire her, and no family dared to propose marriage. The double blow, public scorn and relentless gossip, broke Lily's mind. She began muttering to herself, speaking nonsense no one could understand, lost in a world of her own.[Mr. Shephard, we failed to raise our daughter properly. Our entire family owes you an apology. This is the first sum of money my husband and I managed to scrape together over the past two years by living frugally and borrowing from relatives. It isn't much, only five thousand dollars, but please accept it. Even if we have to sell everything we own, we will do our best to repay what we owe you.]That was written by Lily's parents at the end of the letter. As expected, a thick bundle of cash slipped out of the envelope. It was neatly bound with a rubber band, mostly ten-dollar and twenty-dollar bills, with only a few hundred-dollar notes on top.It was obvious how hard they had worked to gather it.I stared at the

Lily faced the chaos with nothing more than a cold sneer as she scoffed, "A bunch of delusional idiots. They got exactly what they deserved."The judge struck the gavel several times, issuing stern warnings before the courtroom finally quieted and the farce was brought to a halt.In a solemn, heavy atmosphere, the final verdicts were read aloud."The defendant, Hank Shephard, is convicted of intentional destruction of property and intentional assault. For multiple offenses combined, he is sentenced to seven years of fixed-term imprisonment.""The defendant, Sharon Kass, is convicted of theft and intentional assault, and is sentenced to three years of fixed-term imprisonment.""The defendant, William Shephard, who played a primary role in the joint crime, is convicted of intentional destruction of property and intentional assault, and is sentenced to five years of fixed-term imprisonment.""The defendant, Lily Hansen, is convicted of attempted fraud and defamation, and of inciting

On the day of the hearing, Lily's parents, along with every distant relative they could gather from their hometown, showed up outside the courthouse. They held up white banners with bold black text painted across them.[Heartless tycoon drives unborn child to death! Return my daughter's innocence!]Facing the swarm of reporters who had rushed over after hearing the news, they wailed and sobbed, performing their grief with theatrical intensity, tearfully accusing me of destroying their daughter's entire life.Just as their act reached its most dramatic moment, my lawyer stepped out of the courthouse. He did not say a word. Instead, he gestured calmly to the staff, who wheeled a massive display screen to the front entrance. The screen lit up, and the first video began to play.It was the full, high-definition surveillance footage from the underground parking garage, clear and undeniable. The footage of their entire family prying open my car, hurling insults, surrounding and beati

I made my position clear."I'm giving up insurance compensation. I will personally file a criminal case with a civil claim against Hank, William, Lily, and the others."I demand full compensation for the vehicle's purchase price of three million and two hundred thousand dollars, as well as damages for emotional distress and all medical expenses."Not long after, my lawyer's formal notice reached the detention center. When the Shephard family saw the lawsuit amount of three million and two hundred thousand dollars, Sharon's eyes rolled back. She collapsed on the spot, completely terrified.William tried every possible way and finally managed to borrow a phone inside the detention center. The moment the call connected, his voice broke into sobs."F-Francis, my brother! I was wrong! It was all my parents' idea, and Lily's! I was forced into it! The police quickly brought the scene under control. However, the moment Hank's family saw the uniforms, not only did they show no fear, they immediately launched into a shameless performance to twist the story.Sharon dropped herself onto the icy ground with a thud, kneeling and slapping her thighs as she wailed at the top of her lungs.Pointing at the bloody scratch marks Hank had left on my arm, she accused me tearfully, telling the officers how I, a 'rich relative', had used my power to pick on them and even assault an elder.William clutched his face, a clear red handprint stamped across his cheek, shrinking behind Lily like a frightened child.Lily held her phone up high. On the screen was footage of me pushing William away just moments earlier. She shrieked at the police, "Officer, he attacked my fiance first!
