Chapter 1

When I heard the moans coming from the bedroom, the gift slipped from my hands and hit the floor.

The voices belonged to my husband, Elias, and Morwen.

I pushed open the door. Morwen was wearing my nightgown, straddling Elias.

"What are you doing?"

I stared at them in shock. It felt like a blade had been driven into my heart.

"Layla, it's not what you think." Elias froze, then scrambled to explain.

Morwen smirked in triumph. "Layla, it's exactly what it looks like. I slept with your husband."

"Don't be ridiculous, Morwen. Nothing happened! She just tripped and fell on me."

Elias shoved Morwen off him, grabbed his clothes from the floor, and pulled them on any which way.

Those two bastards had defiled the home we'd built together, and I couldn't stop the tears from streaming down my face.

Then I saw the wolf-fang necklace around Morwen's neck, and it hit me that Elias had been acting strangely for a while.

Morwen had worn that necklace to her coming-of-age ceremony a few days earlier.

Elias and I had made it together. I thought it was going to be my anniversary gift. Instead, it ended up around another woman's neck.

When I asked him about it, he said Morwen couldn't find the right necklace for her ceremony, so he'd lent it to her.

So it wasn't that she couldn't find one. It had been meant for her all along.

"Elias, let's sever our mate bond."

I shoved the gift into my pocket, slammed the bedroom door, and walked away.

Elias came after me, grabbed me around the waist, and cornered me. He lifted a hand to wipe away my tears.

"Sweetheart, I'm sorry. Don't be upset!

"It was all for show! The former Alpha promised to give me the moonstone that amplifies a wolf's power if I agreed to take Morwen as my mate. Then I'd be even stronger."

He sounded sincere, but the hunger for power in his eyes was unmistakable.

"Layla, you're my Luna. You're the only one I've ever loved. I want to get stronger so I can protect you."

Looking at the greed in his eyes, I wondered exactly when the man I loved had changed.

He used to hate seeing me shed even one tear. Now he was openly affectionate with another woman and didn't care how much it hurt me.

All of it was for status and strength.

"But you love the moonstone the former Alpha promised you more than you love me, don't you? If you had to choose between me and the moonstone, which would it be?"

"Layla, I'm not choosing. I want both you and the moonstone."

The obsession in his eyes suddenly made me a little afraid.

If he was willing to sleep with Morwen today in exchange for the former Alpha's promise, what would he do tomorrow for power?

I loved the boy who had once given me his whole heart, not the man before me who would stop at nothing to get what he wanted.

I pulled my hand free of his grip in disgust and gave him a cold look.

"Elias, you know I don't care about any of that. But you've become someone I don't even recognize. I won't stay with a man who's betrayed me."

As I turned to leave, he took my hand and led me to the great hall.

"Layla, it's our third anniversary. Can't we just enjoy it? You're going to love the gift I got you!"

After that, Elias refused to leave the pack. When I got scraped up in training, he'd bring me herbs. He'd also collect rare treasures and craft them into jewelry for me.His belated displays of affection struck me as ridiculous. He'd once abandoned me for power. He waited outside my door rain or shine, begging for a chance to make amends. He naively believed that making himself suffer would make me care about him again.I ignored his self-destructive behavior, but my indifference only made him pester me even more. Then one day, Elias brought me a moonstone ring and found Slate standing beside me. "Who's he?""I'm Layla's fiancé!""Layla, is that true?" Elias turned to me in disbelief."Elias, our mate bond is gone. Who I marry is none of your business." I met his bewildered gaze without w

Back home, Elias slowly surveyed the familiar room. The corner of the couch had always been Layla's favorite spot. She would curl up there and wait for him to come home. Sometimes she would fall asleep under the thin blanket. The chair by the dining table still held the throw pillow she always left there.Whenever he came through the door, the first thing he saw was Layla smiling at him from that couch. But now, everything looked exactly as it had before.Only the woman who had always waited for him was gone.He looked down at the moonstone and the power stone in his hands. They were the things he'd once wanted more than anything.Again and again, he had chosen power over her and ignored what it cost her.But now they were right there in his hands.Yet he felt no desire to absorb their power.Elias remained silent for a long time. When Morwen came to, Elias was staring at her anxiously. He demanded, "Morwen, where's Layla?"Seeing how anxious Elias was, Morwen taunted him. "Layla? She drank the wolfsbane, so she's probably dead by now."Elias grabbed Morwen by the throat. "Morwen, don't push me. If you don't tell me where Layla is right now, I'll snap your neck."Morwen struggled to pry his hand off. "L... Layla, she... she fooled all of us. She's way stronger than any of us thought!"While Elias was distracted, Morwen broke free. "Layla injured us and then left. Elias, Layla abandoned you."Elias glared at her. "You're lying! Layla would never leave me! As for you, you stole wolfsbane and tried to hurt a packmate. You'll be punished for this."Morwen shrank back in fear and ran off to find her father.Elias rushed home in a panic, but nothing seemed out of place. The herbs Layla had gathered were still in the storeroom, and her clothes and bags remained untouched. He relaxed at once.Yet the stabbing pain in hi

Morwen was about to pour the wolfsbane into my mouth.I closed my eyes. Morwen and Taryn's abuse had humiliated me, and Elias's betrayal had finally forced me to face the truth.I was done hiding my power. All I wanted now was to go home.I forced my power to surge. The moment I did, it felt as if ants were gnawing through my insides.A scream tore out of me.I fought through the pain, broke free of the thick ropes binding me, and kicked Taryn away."How... How are you this strong?"Taryn stared at me in shock.I ignored her and walked straight toward Morwen. As I advanced, Morwen clutched the bottle of wolfsbane in a trembling hand. With a flick of my wrist, I sent the bottle flying from her hand."Don't... Don't come any closer. If anything happens to me, my father will never let you get away with it!"Morwen tried to sound defiant. But her trembling body gave her away."Is that so?"I scoffed and backed her into a corner."Morwen, all I ever wanted was to live in peace.
