Chapter 4

ผู้เขียน: Sticky Candy
The moment Dad laid eyes on Brie's bloodied face, he raised his hand and slapped me.

My ears rang, and half of my face went numb as I stood there without moving.

Dad held Brie in his arms, his eyes bloodshot. "Tiana, have you lost your mind? She's pregnant!"

I touched the blood at the corner of my lips, then said, "It wasn't me."

Brie shrank into Dad's arms, her voice trembling. "Mike, please don't be too harsh on her. She just can't accept that I'm pregnant. I know she thinks I'm taking her mom's place…"

Dad became even more enraged. "How long are you going to keep up the act? Marie saw you arguing with Brie just now."

I sneered, "So just because we argued, that means I definitely pushed her? So if Vance says he slept with her and got her pregnant, does that mean it's true too?"

Dad roared, "Vance already said that was a whole bunch of nonsense caused by the food poisoning. Why do you have to keep dragging this out? Are you trying to tear this family apart?"

Why was I always the one who did something wrong?

Why did no one ever listen when I tried to defend myself?

I refused to back down. "Dad, do you really not suspect her at all? Mom discovered that there was something going on between Brie and Vance before she passed away, and there's a copy of Mom's death certificate in her bag. Also, Vance is the father of her baby."

Dad finally snapped, "Enough! Tiana, are you really going to stoop this low and make up accusations like these just to drive Brie away?"

Brie sobbed so hard that she could barely catch her breath. "Mike, I don't want to live anymore. I really don't. If me being here only brings Tiana suffering, I'll leave."

Dad wrapped his arms around her tightly. "No one can make you leave." Then, in a cold, commanding tone, he ordered, "From now on, you'll move to the west wing and reflect on what you've done. You're not allowed to leave the house until the engagement party."

I froze when I heard "west wing". It was Mom's old laboratory building that Dad had kept sealed for seven years after she died there. And now, he wanted to lock me up in that place.

"Dad, aren't you afraid I'll die there too?"

Dad did hesitate for a moment, but Brie tugged on his sleeve and whispered, "Tiana can be a little temperamental at times. Maybe it's better to let her cool down."

And just like that, I was locked in the west wing.

The moment the heavy iron door slammed shut, the cold, musty smell of mold hit me. I leaned against the wall, finally losing all strength as I slowly slid to the floor.

They took away my phone, posted someone outside the door, and welded iron bars over the windows, making the place feel less like a room and more like a grave for the living.

But there was something that they didn't know.

Years ago, Mom had built a hidden fire escape here in case one of her experiments ever went wrong.

I felt my way through the dark to the basement, coughing as the thick layer of dust filled my lungs. The iron door in the corner was covered in rust, and I struggled to turn the latch.

Then the door opened, and a rush of cold air swept through. A sealed document fell to the floor. I recognized Mom's handwriting on the front.

It read, "If anything happens to me, give this to Tiana."

My hands trembled as I opened it to find a paternity test between Dad and me. The result indicated that we were in no way biologically related.

My breath hitched.

I wasn't his daughter?

By the time I escaped through the fire exit, it was completely dark outside. I was covered in dust, and my palms were bleeding after I accidentally cut them on the iron door.

Yet I felt no pain at all.

The paternity test weighed on my chest like a heavy stone. If I wasn't Mike's daughter, then his coldness toward me all these years finally made sense.

I just couldn't fathom why Mom didn't tell me the truth.

I contacted the old lawyer Mom trusted the most, Aaron Kruger.

He let out a long, emotional sigh. "Ms. Kemp, you've finally found it."

My throat tightened. "Aaron, what exactly is going on?"

I had changed my last name to Mom's. From then on, I was just Tiana Roth. I wasn't Mike's daughter or Vance's fiance. I was about to go onstage when a security guard came over in a hurry. "Dr. Roth, an investor from Zethor wants to see you."I furrowed my brows. "Tell him to leave if he doesn't have an appointment."The sound of someone calling my name from the entrance stopped me cold. I looked up and saw a stranger standing there. Then I saw his eyes.I recognized Vance at once. The way he looked at me was sickeningly familiar. He smiled. "I'm out. Brie changed her testimony, and most of the charges ended up falling on her. I was only her accomplice. Tiana, I came to find you.""Get lost!" I snapped. He acted like he hadn't heard me and kept walking toward me. "I know you hate me. But I've been thinking about you every day for the past year. I even changed my name and had plastic surgery. Let's start over."It seemed that in his eyes, some wounds could be erased with a singl

He looked at me, his voice betraying a hint of nervousness when he spoke. "Tiana, I'm Richard. I'm your father."Richard Sinclair was nothing like I had imagined. I thought he would be emotional and full of guilt, desperate to explain everything that had happened back then. Instead, he just stood three steps away from me, so restrained that it was almost as if he were afraid to come any closer."I have no right to ask you to acknowledge me. I just heard you were going abroad, so I came to see you."I tightened my grip on the USB drive Mom had left behind, my throat growing tight. "You knew I existed?"He nodded. "I did. When your mom was pregnant with you, something happened to my family. By the time I dealt with it and came back, she had already married Mike and refused to see me. Later, I went abroad for treatment and lost touch with everyone back home."Richard's voice remained calm, but I noticed how tightly he was gripping his cane, his knuckles turning white."All these y

"Mike, you abandoned me first."He lowered his head and said nothing.I placed the signed papers on the nightstand. "Starting today, Aaron will be your temporary medical power of attorney. I'm leaving the country. We don't need to see each other again."As I turned to leave, I heard him cry quietly behind me. I didn't stop.I had just reached the elevator when Aaron's phone rang. Whatever he heard made his expression change."Ms. Kemp, Vance has requested to see you. He says he knows where your mom hid the last set of experimental data."I decided to meet him for Mom's sake.Vance sat behind thick glass in a jail uniform. He looked nothing like the man who used to be at the top of the world. His eyes lit up as soon as he saw me. "You really came."I picked up the receiver. "Talk."Vance smiled bitterly. "You can't even be bothered to speak to me now?"I frowned, my patience wearing thin. "You have three minutes left."Vance pressed his lips together before finally speaking.

People started chattering.I looked at Brie, feeling strangely calm. "My mom didn't cheat on her husband. When she married Mike, he knew she was pregnant with me. He took resources from the Sinclair family and signed an agreement to raise me and keep everything confidential."Do you want me to put them on the screen now?"Brie had wanted to tear me down completely. She never expected that I already knew everything.I kept going. "It doesn't matter whether I'm really part of the Kemp family. What you should know is that everything my mom left behind never belonged to the Kemp family, and it certainly doesn't belong to the Topp family."At that moment, the hospital called. Aaron answered, and his expression shifted immediately. He handed me the phone.A nurse's hurried voice came through the line. "Ms. Kemp, your father is awake. He's very upset after watching your livestream."I paused.Mike was awake.Brie's eyes lit up, and she called out through her tears. "Mike, you have to

"Brie, once I marry Tiana, the trust fund that her mom left behind will be ours…"We can't let that old bastard find out about the baby you're carrying…"That idiot Tiana is still living in her own little fantasy, thinking I love her…"Guests started whispering among themselves as they pulled out their phones to record what was happening.Irina screamed, "Turn it off! Turn it off now!"Vance tried to rush the stage, but the security guards Aaron had arranged for the event pinned him to the ground.I watched him struggle on the floor, looking pathetic. Finally, my anger exploded. "Vance, you asshole! You and Brie killed my mom seven years ago, and now you're still trying to trick me into marrying you. Do you really think I don't know Brie is pregnant with your kid?"The video cut to another scene, showing Brie slipping something into the formula while Vance stood outside the lab.Everyone went silent."What a bastard!" someone in the crowd shouted. That was all it took. Soon,

Panic flashed in Vance's eyes, but he quickly hid it. "You don't have proof."I looked at him, a faint smile playing on my lips. The tension in the air was thick.Brie walked over and gently patted Vance on the arm. "Vance, don't argue with Tiana."Vance reached out and steadied her without even thinking. He did it so naturally, like he'd done it countless times before.By the time he realized what he had done, I had already taken a picture.Brie's face stiffened. "Tiana, were you just taking a picture of me?"I slipped my phone back into my pocket. "Well, I have to have a little record of how close my fiance and my stepmother are."Vance finally dropped his gentle act. "Tiana, what will it take for you to let this go?"I swallowed the hatred rising in my chest and looked at him. "You'll find out tonight."The light above the operating room finally went out, and the doctor walked toward us with a grim expression. "He's out of immediate danger for now, but he was given a subst
