Chapter 3

작가: Sticky Candy
Mom died seven years ago from a sudden allergic reaction. That day, she was testing a new allergy treatment in the lab when she suddenly had trouble breathing. By the time she was taken to the hospital, it was already too late.

I never questioned it when everyone claimed it was an accident.

But the abnormal drug reaction listed on her death certificate matched Mom's known allergy exactly.

And I knew she wasn't a careless person. I had to find out the truth and get her justice.

By the time I arrived, the sky had lightened. Dad had always wanted a son, so he stayed by Brie's side at the hospital.

As for Vance, he had sent me a bunch of messages.

"Tiana, stop overthinking things."

"Our engagement will go on as planned."

"Don't make things difficult for your dad."

"Calm down. Don't be as stubborn as your mom."

How ridiculous.

Vance had no business mentioning Mom.

I put my phone aside and opened the safe at home. Inside were Mom's private diaries, her original handwritten formulas, and an old voice recorder she had left behind. I rarely looked at any of them, because every time I did, it felt like I was losing her all over again.

The handwriting on the last few pages of the diary was messy.

"Brie has been coming to the lab a lot lately, asking too many questions she shouldn't be asking. She's smart, but it's a shame she has no principles."

"Mike says I'm too cynical, but Vance is too calculating. I'm worried because Tiana trusts him too much."

My scalp prickled.

Seven years ago, Vance was still just a poor student I'd brought home and decided to support financially. Now I realized that I was the one who had set the domino effect in motion.

The recorder had been dead for years, so I plugged a charging cable into it. The moment the red light came on, my heart pounded so hard it felt like it was about to burst out of my chest. An hour later, I could finally turn it on.

There was only one recording.

Mom's voice came on first. "Brie, why did you touch my reagent cabinet?"

Then came Brie's younger, more innocent voice. "Professor Roth, I just wanted to learn."

Mom sneered. "Are you a thief? Not only did you steal things, but you stole someone's man too. Are you so desperate to be a homewrecker?"

After a brief silence, Brie's smug, brazen laughter came through. "Professor Roth, don't make it sound so bad. Vance and Tiana are just dating. They aren't married, are they? I didn't do anything wrong."

The recording abruptly cut off.

I sat in the study, overwhelmed by mixed emotions.

It was clear to me then that Brie and Vance had been messing around behind my back for seven years. I'd been living a lie the whole time.

Determined to keep myself from dwelling on it further, I backed up the recording, the prenatal report, and the video of Vance when he was poisoned. After gathering all the evidence, I contacted my lawyer, Jerry Bane.

"I want to call off the engagement and revoke all authorization for Vance to use my mom's formulas. Also, I want to reopen the investigation into my mom's death."

Jerry was silent for a moment. "Ms. Kemp, your dad may not agree to this."

I looked out the window.

Dad had once loved me dearly too. After Mom died, he held me and cried, saying that we only had each other left.

Not long after that, he married Brie and began favoring her instead.

He once told me, "Being with me despite what people think hasn't been easy for Brie. You need to give her a little more leeway."

I shook my head, trying to shake off those unnecessary thoughts. "It doesn't matter. What's in my name is mine to decide."

I had barely hung up when I heard footsteps outside. Brie was standing at the door, dressed in a white maternity dress, one hand resting lightly on her stomach.

She flashed me a vicious grin. "Tiana, I knew you were investigating."

My eyes blazed with fury as I stared Brie down. "Were you behind my mom's death?"

Brie hid her smile behind her hand. "Do you have proof?"

I tightened my grip on the recorder, and Brie's eyes fell on it.

"Oh, so you really did have something."

The next second, she turned around and slammed herself against the doorframe. Her forehead split open, and blood immediately gushed down her cheek.

Brie screamed, "Tiana, please don't hurt my baby!"

Dad's panicked voice came from downstairs. "Brie, what happened?"

I bit my lip, my whole body trembling with rage as Brie lay on the floor, smiling at me.

I had changed my last name to Mom's. From then on, I was just Tiana Roth. I wasn't Mike's daughter or Vance's fiance. I was about to go onstage when a security guard came over in a hurry. "Dr. Roth, an investor from Zethor wants to see you."I furrowed my brows. "Tell him to leave if he doesn't have an appointment."The sound of someone calling my name from the entrance stopped me cold. I looked up and saw a stranger standing there. Then I saw his eyes.I recognized Vance at once. The way he looked at me was sickeningly familiar. He smiled. "I'm out. Brie changed her testimony, and most of the charges ended up falling on her. I was only her accomplice. Tiana, I came to find you.""Get lost!" I snapped. He acted like he hadn't heard me and kept walking toward me. "I know you hate me. But I've been thinking about you every day for the past year. I even changed my name and had plastic surgery. Let's start over."It seemed that in his eyes, some wounds could be erased with a singl

He looked at me, his voice betraying a hint of nervousness when he spoke. "Tiana, I'm Richard. I'm your father."Richard Sinclair was nothing like I had imagined. I thought he would be emotional and full of guilt, desperate to explain everything that had happened back then. Instead, he just stood three steps away from me, so restrained that it was almost as if he were afraid to come any closer."I have no right to ask you to acknowledge me. I just heard you were going abroad, so I came to see you."I tightened my grip on the USB drive Mom had left behind, my throat growing tight. "You knew I existed?"He nodded. "I did. When your mom was pregnant with you, something happened to my family. By the time I dealt with it and came back, she had already married Mike and refused to see me. Later, I went abroad for treatment and lost touch with everyone back home."Richard's voice remained calm, but I noticed how tightly he was gripping his cane, his knuckles turning white."All these y

"Mike, you abandoned me first."He lowered his head and said nothing.I placed the signed papers on the nightstand. "Starting today, Aaron will be your temporary medical power of attorney. I'm leaving the country. We don't need to see each other again."As I turned to leave, I heard him cry quietly behind me. I didn't stop.I had just reached the elevator when Aaron's phone rang. Whatever he heard made his expression change."Ms. Kemp, Vance has requested to see you. He says he knows where your mom hid the last set of experimental data."I decided to meet him for Mom's sake.Vance sat behind thick glass in a jail uniform. He looked nothing like the man who used to be at the top of the world. His eyes lit up as soon as he saw me. "You really came."I picked up the receiver. "Talk."Vance smiled bitterly. "You can't even be bothered to speak to me now?"I frowned, my patience wearing thin. "You have three minutes left."Vance pressed his lips together before finally speaking.

People started chattering.I looked at Brie, feeling strangely calm. "My mom didn't cheat on her husband. When she married Mike, he knew she was pregnant with me. He took resources from the Sinclair family and signed an agreement to raise me and keep everything confidential."Do you want me to put them on the screen now?"Brie had wanted to tear me down completely. She never expected that I already knew everything.I kept going. "It doesn't matter whether I'm really part of the Kemp family. What you should know is that everything my mom left behind never belonged to the Kemp family, and it certainly doesn't belong to the Topp family."At that moment, the hospital called. Aaron answered, and his expression shifted immediately. He handed me the phone.A nurse's hurried voice came through the line. "Ms. Kemp, your father is awake. He's very upset after watching your livestream."I paused.Mike was awake.Brie's eyes lit up, and she called out through her tears. "Mike, you have to

"Brie, once I marry Tiana, the trust fund that her mom left behind will be ours…"We can't let that old bastard find out about the baby you're carrying…"That idiot Tiana is still living in her own little fantasy, thinking I love her…"Guests started whispering among themselves as they pulled out their phones to record what was happening.Irina screamed, "Turn it off! Turn it off now!"Vance tried to rush the stage, but the security guards Aaron had arranged for the event pinned him to the ground.I watched him struggle on the floor, looking pathetic. Finally, my anger exploded. "Vance, you asshole! You and Brie killed my mom seven years ago, and now you're still trying to trick me into marrying you. Do you really think I don't know Brie is pregnant with your kid?"The video cut to another scene, showing Brie slipping something into the formula while Vance stood outside the lab.Everyone went silent."What a bastard!" someone in the crowd shouted. That was all it took. Soon,

Panic flashed in Vance's eyes, but he quickly hid it. "You don't have proof."I looked at him, a faint smile playing on my lips. The tension in the air was thick.Brie walked over and gently patted Vance on the arm. "Vance, don't argue with Tiana."Vance reached out and steadied her without even thinking. He did it so naturally, like he'd done it countless times before.By the time he realized what he had done, I had already taken a picture.Brie's face stiffened. "Tiana, were you just taking a picture of me?"I slipped my phone back into my pocket. "Well, I have to have a little record of how close my fiance and my stepmother are."Vance finally dropped his gentle act. "Tiana, what will it take for you to let this go?"I swallowed the hatred rising in my chest and looked at him. "You'll find out tonight."The light above the operating room finally went out, and the doctor walked toward us with a grim expression. "He's out of immediate danger for now, but he was given a subst
