Chapter 2

Aвтор: James Xander
Vivian was stumped. Her red lips parted and closed as she struggled to find her voice. It probably never crossed her mind that I was well aware of every single detail of her affair.

Humiliated, she snapped, "It was just a momentary lapse in judgment! What else was I supposed to do after I got pregnant? Do you honestly have the heart to deny a baby its mother?

"Sebastian Kingsley, after having a child, I remained married to you, so you should be grateful! Why do you have to be so vindictive and ruin Noah's entire life?"

Her sheer audacity actually made me laugh out loud. Back when we were pursuing our doctorates together, I was the one who handed my own research findings over to her on a silver platter and made her famous overnight.

Later on, I was the one who stayed in her shadow, slaving away in the lab to publish paper after paper in top journals for her. Yet now, I was the malicious one.

I slowly rose to my feet and asked coldly, "Oh, so that's what you're calling it? A momentary lapse in judgment?

"A lapse so bad that the two of you checked into hotels thousands of times over three years? A lapse so bad that you deliberately hid your 'overseas advanced studies' from me when you actually went to give birth to his child?

"I'm not the one who ruined him, Vivian. Your sick, twisted relationship did. And don't call me vindictive. If I were truly malicious, I wouldn't be the pathetic wimp who got cheated on and still helped cover it up for you!"

Vivian trembled with anger, but when she met my cold gaze, she forced herself to suppress it.

Closing in on me, she almost pleaded, "Darling, I know I messed up, but everything I've achieved today is the result of our hard work. Do you really want to burn it all down? You promised you'd love me for the rest of your life.

"Look, if it makes you happy, I promise I'll never see him again!" With that, she reached out to grasp my arm.

In the past, as long as she softened her demeanor, I would grant her every wish. Even if she asked me to drop dead, I wouldn't have hesitated. However, watching her play the submissive wife now, I only found it utterly farcical.

Before I could respond, her phone rang. With a single glance, I caught a glimpse of her screen. It was a photo of the three of them, posing as a happy family.

The moment she answered, a childish voice came from the other end. "Mommy, what do I do? Daddy… is covered in blood! I'm scared, Mommy, please come get me!"

Accompanying the child's panicked sobs was Noah's weak, aggrieved voice. "It's okay, Vivi. This is all my fault. Don't let me make things difficult for you. I brought this on myself, and I should face the consequences.

"Don't worry about our son anymore. He's just an unlucky kid who wasn't meant to have a mother in his life."

Right after saying that, he hung up. Seconds later, he posted a photo of his slit wrists on his social media feed with the caption, "She's like a rainbow. Unfortunately, she isn't mine."

In a heartbeat, the color drained from her face. When she looked at me again, there was no trace of vulnerability left in her eyes.

Vivian abruptly raised her hand and slapped me across the face. Her wedding ring tore a long gash across my cheek, and blood immediately began to seep out. "If anything happens to Noah, I swear to God I'll destroy you!"

Wiping the blood off my face, I sneered, "Vivian Carter, you really think your love story is some grand, beautiful thing, don't you? Am I supposed to be a spineless coward who isn't allowed to get angry, even when you're screwing another man at my own mother's funeral?

"Why are you still standing here anyway? Aren't you worried your little boy toy is heartbroken?"

As soon as my words sank in, Vivian staggered half a step back, as if she had never known me at all.

"Oh, and remember to tell him that if he's going to put on an act, he should at least make it convincing. Smearing a few blood bags all over himself doesn't count as slitting his wrists."

Vivian bolted out of the door, yet I didn't feel a single spark of emotion as I took in the utter despair on her face.

Clamping her hands over her ears, Vivian shrieked, "No! That's not true! Sebastian lied to me! He's the one who hid his identity! He played me for a fool!""I hid my identity?" I scoffed. "Vivian, I dare you to look me in the eye and tell me you didn't hook up with Noah just because he was young and stroked your ego." Vivian's lips trembled, but she couldn't utter a single word. She had probably forgotten that when Noah first entered the university, he was just a poor student who couldn't even afford his own lab coat. She was the one who consistently showered him with luxury goods and bought him sports cars. Just then, several police officers marched into the restaurant and walked straight up to Vivian. "Ms. Carter, we've received a report that you are suspected of embezzling funds and covering up academic misconduct. Please come with us now for further investigation." Vivian panicked and lunged at me, attempting to grasp my arm, but the security guards restrained her. "Seb, sav

Frida chose a window seat and ordered a whole spread of my favorite food. Spearing a piece of steak with her silver fork, she sliced it methodically. Her eyes, however, drifted toward the window as she gloated, "Look at that guy in the suit. Isn't that the Carters' CFO? At the last industry summit, he was bragging to me about how Carter Pharmaceuticals makes medicine with a conscience. Now, he's eating his own words."Ignoring the commotion outside, I merely raised my glass of lemon water to my lips for a sip. Frida slid the sliced steak over to me before arching her brow. "What, do you not have an appetite? Or do you think I was being too petty by choosing this spot?" "Neither." I shook my head and picked up my fork. "I just feel like it's time for this whole farce to end."As soon as my words fell, my phone rang. I answered it, and a solemn voice came through the line. "Dr. Kingsley, the investigation into Noah's academic misconduct has concluded. The evidence is irrefutable. T

Vivian's grip on Noah's arm abruptly tightened until her knuckles turned white. In a heartbeat, her already pale face lost all color, and her lips quivered as she struggled to find her voice.Nathan, who was in Noah's arms, was startled by the heavy atmosphere. He whimpered and was about to burst into tears, but Noah held him down firmly. At last, she found her voice, yet it shook with disbelief. "... Kingsley Group? Are you… referring to the one that monopolizes more than half of the pharmaceutical supply chain in Oakridge?"I didn't answer, but she could read the answer in my eyes. Plus, she knew I never lied.Drinking in the sight of her devastated expression, I didn't feel a single shred of sympathy, only a sense of vindication that had come far too late. Back then, for the sake of love, I had deliberately hidden my identity, believing it would earn me a genuine, equal relationship. I never imagined that in their eyes, I was nothing more than a kept man who could be easily m

Frida guffawed. "You're really pulling the rug out from under them, aren't you, Mr. Kingsley? I love it! By the way, your dad… does he know you're playing for keeps now?""He does. He already has our legal team on standby. The moment the Carters' stock prices plummet, he'll join forces with the other shareholders to acquire their shares."After wrapping up the call, I tucked the blue folder into my briefcase. I had just gotten to my feet when the front door opened, and Vivian walked in with Noah and Nathan.Noah walked in, laden down with over a dozen luxury shopping bags, while Nathan hid timidly behind Vivian. "Mommy, why does that uncle look just like a dog?"Vivian froze for a moment. Then, her face darkened as she pulled Nathan further behind her and snapped, "Zip it, Nate!"Nathan, however, clearly didn't understand what he had done wrong. In fact, he lifted his little face and pointed at the paint stains on my body that hadn't been completely washed off. "But he's so dirty,

Frida Lancaster's laughter was hearty, and she sounded as if she knew I'd come looking for her. "For you to reach out to me, it seems you've finally seen the error of your ways, Mr. Kingsley."I could hear the teasing edge in her voice and let out a sigh in resignation. Now that things had come to this, I really only had myself to blame. I pinched the bridge of my nose, steering clear of the fresh wounds on my face. Every single one of them served as a brutal reminder of how absurdly foolish I had been back then. I didn't argue. "Let's leave the past in the past for now. Now, if we want to take down the Carters, how many chips do you have in your hand?"Her laughter faded, and her tone instantly became professional. "Last year, the Carters snatched an overseas vaccine order from my company. To drive down costs, they used substandard raw materials. I have the supply chain lab reports right here, along with the wire transfer records of them bribing customs officials. "In addition

Vivian was betting on the fact that after the massive blow her family dealt me, I'd be too terrified to utter a single sound. When I didn't budge, she scowled, and her voice became icy. "What are you waiting for, Sebastian? Go make Nate some supper while you're at it!"Lounging on the couch, I looked at her calmly. "I'm not your dog. Why should I listen to you?" Vivian stiffened. Clearly, she hadn't expected me to be completely unfazed by the carrot or the stick.Noah, who was behind her, held Nathan's hand, putting on a pitiful act. "Forget it, Vivi. Nate and I should just stay at a hotel. Dr. Kingsley clearly doesn't welcome us, and I don't want to scare Nate further."Right on cue, Nathan burst into tears and wailed, "Mommy, I'm scared..." The father and son looked as if they had suffered some terrible injustice. I jeered. "If you know you're not welcome, yet you still followed her back, are you just begging to be humiliated? Noah, you recovered from slitting your wrists so
