Chapter 3

ผู้เขียน: James Xander
After Dr. Sanders patched me up, I drove home to pack my belongings. This house was the marital home I had bought with my very first bonus.

Back then, my parents had opposed me marrying Vivian. I had a massive falling out with them over it, which led them to freeze all my bank accounts. When I stormed out of the house, I confidently swore to them that Vivian and I would live happily ever after.

I had finally managed to get my family to change their opinion of her, only for her to turn around and do something so utterly repulsive.

Halfway through packing, I heard the front door click open. Emily strutted into the living room, hidden behind oversized sunglasses. The moment she saw me, she shoved a check into my hand.

"Here's 7.5 million dollars," she said haughtily. "I'm holding a press conference this afternoon, and you're going to say that the child is yours. If you cooperate, I'll forgive you for doing Vivian dirty."

I reached out and took the check. Emily scoffed. "This is enough to buy the rest of your life."

The very next second, before the derisive smile could even fade from her lips, I tore the check into shreds. 7.5 million dollars wasn't even enough for my family's housekeeper to buy groceries.

The only reason I had kept them in the dark about my status as a scion to a billionaire family was because I had been angry with my own family.

Emily ripped off her sunglasses, her face filled with disbelief. "Have you lost your marbles? What on earth do you think you're doing?"

I brushed the remnants of the torn check off my palms. "I don't want a single cent. I just want justice."

"Justice? Who do you think you are to go head-to-head with us? Sebastian, just because your last name happens to be Kingsley, you think you can ride the coattails of the Kingsley family of Oakridge? Fine, if you don't want to cooperate, you'll have no one to blame but yourself!"

Watching her back as she stormed out the door, I couldn't help but jeer. Unfortunately for her, I was from the Kingsley family of Oakridge.

The Carters' retaliation was swift and brutal. That very evening, I was accused of plagiarizing my research paper, bullying my colleagues, and stealing someone else's lab results.

Reporters besieged my home, trapping me inside. Then came the avalanche of termination letters from corporate partners, demanding hundreds of millions of dollars in damages.

When Dr. Sanders called me, he couldn't stop sighing. "I told you the Carters are not to be trifled with, Sebastian. They're attempting to utterly ruin you. How are you ever going to show your face in this field now?"

In a single night, I went from being a genius scientist to a plagiarizing fraud, and the internet was flooded with people cursing me out.

"So he's just a kept man. No wonder Dr. Carter cheated on him!"

"Dr. Carter is a saint for enduring this disgusting man for three whole years!"

"I knew our professor-student age-gap ship was real!"

My personal information was doxxed. The harassment texts and death threats were relentless, my phone buzzing nonstop from dawn until dusk.

Noah and Vivian, on the other hand, were in their element. The couple started livestreaming on the internet, even bringing their previously well-hidden illegitimate son, Nathan Myers, out into the spotlight. They looked like a picture-perfect, happy family of three.

The media ran non-stop loops of Vivian, the aloof professor, making her heartfelt confession. "Noah has given up too much for me. I won't stand by and watch him suffer."

That evening, when Vivian returned home, she even brought Noah and Nathan back. "Go clear your things out of the master bedroom. The three of us are sleeping together tonight," she ordered matter-of-factly without even looking up.

Clamping her hands over her ears, Vivian shrieked, "No! That's not true! Sebastian lied to me! He's the one who hid his identity! He played me for a fool!""I hid my identity?" I scoffed. "Vivian, I dare you to look me in the eye and tell me you didn't hook up with Noah just because he was young and stroked your ego." Vivian's lips trembled, but she couldn't utter a single word. She had probably forgotten that when Noah first entered the university, he was just a poor student who couldn't even afford his own lab coat. She was the one who consistently showered him with luxury goods and bought him sports cars. Just then, several police officers marched into the restaurant and walked straight up to Vivian. "Ms. Carter, we've received a report that you are suspected of embezzling funds and covering up academic misconduct. Please come with us now for further investigation." Vivian panicked and lunged at me, attempting to grasp my arm, but the security guards restrained her. "Seb, sav

Frida chose a window seat and ordered a whole spread of my favorite food. Spearing a piece of steak with her silver fork, she sliced it methodically. Her eyes, however, drifted toward the window as she gloated, "Look at that guy in the suit. Isn't that the Carters' CFO? At the last industry summit, he was bragging to me about how Carter Pharmaceuticals makes medicine with a conscience. Now, he's eating his own words."Ignoring the commotion outside, I merely raised my glass of lemon water to my lips for a sip. Frida slid the sliced steak over to me before arching her brow. "What, do you not have an appetite? Or do you think I was being too petty by choosing this spot?" "Neither." I shook my head and picked up my fork. "I just feel like it's time for this whole farce to end."As soon as my words fell, my phone rang. I answered it, and a solemn voice came through the line. "Dr. Kingsley, the investigation into Noah's academic misconduct has concluded. The evidence is irrefutable. T

Vivian's grip on Noah's arm abruptly tightened until her knuckles turned white. In a heartbeat, her already pale face lost all color, and her lips quivered as she struggled to find her voice.Nathan, who was in Noah's arms, was startled by the heavy atmosphere. He whimpered and was about to burst into tears, but Noah held him down firmly. At last, she found her voice, yet it shook with disbelief. "... Kingsley Group? Are you… referring to the one that monopolizes more than half of the pharmaceutical supply chain in Oakridge?"I didn't answer, but she could read the answer in my eyes. Plus, she knew I never lied.Drinking in the sight of her devastated expression, I didn't feel a single shred of sympathy, only a sense of vindication that had come far too late. Back then, for the sake of love, I had deliberately hidden my identity, believing it would earn me a genuine, equal relationship. I never imagined that in their eyes, I was nothing more than a kept man who could be easily m

Frida guffawed. "You're really pulling the rug out from under them, aren't you, Mr. Kingsley? I love it! By the way, your dad… does he know you're playing for keeps now?""He does. He already has our legal team on standby. The moment the Carters' stock prices plummet, he'll join forces with the other shareholders to acquire their shares."After wrapping up the call, I tucked the blue folder into my briefcase. I had just gotten to my feet when the front door opened, and Vivian walked in with Noah and Nathan.Noah walked in, laden down with over a dozen luxury shopping bags, while Nathan hid timidly behind Vivian. "Mommy, why does that uncle look just like a dog?"Vivian froze for a moment. Then, her face darkened as she pulled Nathan further behind her and snapped, "Zip it, Nate!"Nathan, however, clearly didn't understand what he had done wrong. In fact, he lifted his little face and pointed at the paint stains on my body that hadn't been completely washed off. "But he's so dirty,

Frida Lancaster's laughter was hearty, and she sounded as if she knew I'd come looking for her. "For you to reach out to me, it seems you've finally seen the error of your ways, Mr. Kingsley."I could hear the teasing edge in her voice and let out a sigh in resignation. Now that things had come to this, I really only had myself to blame. I pinched the bridge of my nose, steering clear of the fresh wounds on my face. Every single one of them served as a brutal reminder of how absurdly foolish I had been back then. I didn't argue. "Let's leave the past in the past for now. Now, if we want to take down the Carters, how many chips do you have in your hand?"Her laughter faded, and her tone instantly became professional. "Last year, the Carters snatched an overseas vaccine order from my company. To drive down costs, they used substandard raw materials. I have the supply chain lab reports right here, along with the wire transfer records of them bribing customs officials. "In addition

Vivian was betting on the fact that after the massive blow her family dealt me, I'd be too terrified to utter a single sound. When I didn't budge, she scowled, and her voice became icy. "What are you waiting for, Sebastian? Go make Nate some supper while you're at it!"Lounging on the couch, I looked at her calmly. "I'm not your dog. Why should I listen to you?" Vivian stiffened. Clearly, she hadn't expected me to be completely unfazed by the carrot or the stick.Noah, who was behind her, held Nathan's hand, putting on a pitiful act. "Forget it, Vivi. Nate and I should just stay at a hotel. Dr. Kingsley clearly doesn't welcome us, and I don't want to scare Nate further."Right on cue, Nathan burst into tears and wailed, "Mommy, I'm scared..." The father and son looked as if they had suffered some terrible injustice. I jeered. "If you know you're not welcome, yet you still followed her back, are you just begging to be humiliated? Noah, you recovered from slitting your wrists so
