Seraphina called Cassian knowing she was about to piss him off.

“Ten o’clock tomorrow,” she said, skipping the greeting. “I’ve arranged a press conference to announce the partnership.”

“You arranged it.”

“I did.”

“Without asking me.”

“I’m telling you now.” Her voice remained even. “Just show up and do what you always do, Mr. Devereaux.”

“And what is that?”

“Look like you’re in control of things,” she said without missing a beat. “You’re very good at it.”

Cassian said nothing.

She smiled to herself and ended the call.

She was already at the podium when Cassian arrived the next morning. The atrium was fuller than any announcement they had made before, with reporters filling the seats and cameras positioned at the front.

Cassian stopped when he saw the setup.

“You planned all this?”

Seraphina glanced at him.

“I said I arranged a press conference.”

“You arranged a press conference without telling me.”

“I told you yesterday.”

“You told me I had to be here at ten.”

“And you’re here.”

He stared at her for a moment.

“Looks like you made it after all,” Seraphina said when he reached her.

“You didn’t give me a choice.”

“I never do.”

His gaze stayed on hers for a moment before he turned toward the room. Seraphina took her place beside him as the communications director droned through the opening remarks about the benefits of the partnership.

Cassian listened quietly.

The questions began as soon as the communications director stepped aside.

“Ms. Voss,” a reporter called, “some are calling this the most aggressive partnership Devereaux Holdings has entered in a decade. Was that the intention?”

“I don’t know where you heard that from, but I sure didn’t hold him at gunpoint. Besides, I don’t do anything halfway.”

Her comment earned her laughter from the room.

“Mr. Devereaux will tell you he agreed to these terms because they made business sense. I’ll tell you he agreed because he already knew what it would cost him not to.”

The laughter grew louder while Cassian’s jaw tightened.

“Mr. Devereaux, how would you characterize working with Ms. Voss so far?”

“Educational,” he said, earning another laugh. “She negotiates like she’s already won before the meeting starts.”

“Because I usually have,” Seraphina said.

More laughter filled the atrium.

Cassian looked at her.

She turned toward the next reporter.

“Ms. Voss, your negotiations with Devereaux Holdings attracted quite a bit of attention. Reports said Mr. Devereaux was given a deadline to accept the final terms. Is that accurate?”

Seraphina smiled.

“Accurate enough.”

“And was that really necessary?”

“I had already made my position clear. He had forty-eight hours to decide whether he wanted the deal.”

Cassian finally spoke.

“She was very clear about the deadline.”

The reporter turned toward him.

“And you accepted?”

“I did.”

“Why?”

Cassian glanced at Seraphina.

“Because the terms made sense.”

Another hand went up.

“Mr. Devereaux, was there any hesitation before you signed?”

“There was consideration.”

“Meaning?”

“Meaning I considered what would happen if I didn’t sign.”

Seraphina turned toward him.

“That sounds almost exactly like what I said.”

“It was a different calculation.”

“Of course.”

The reporter smiled before moving on.

The questions continued, moving from the partnership itself to the terms they had agreed on, then to what their companies planned to do next. Seraphina answered easily, occasionally throwing a remark in Cassian’s direction that made the reporters laugh and left him with little choice but to respond. He gave as good as he got, his answers becoming shorter as the conference went on.

By the final question, the smile he’d worn for the cameras was gone. His hand rested against the podium, fingers curled slightly around the edge.

Cassian waited until the nearest reporters were far enough away before turning to her.

“What was that?”

Seraphina barely glanced at him.

“What was what?”

He looked at her in disbelief . Did she really not know what she had just done?

“The show you just put on.”

“I’m just doing my job.”

She looked up at him.

“You?”

For a moment, he didn’t have an answer.

Seraphina picked up the last of her papers.

“You’re welcome, by the way.”

“For what?”

“For making sure everyone left here thinking this partnership was the best thing either company has done all year.”

“You made me look like I enjoyed working with you.”

“You managed that part yourself.”

His eyes narrowed.

“I did?”

“You laughed.”

“At your jokes.”

“Still counts.”

He stared at her for a moment, clearly deciding whether arguing with her was worth it.

Seraphina gathered the papers against her chest.

“Try not to look so offended. The cameras liked us.”

“I’m sure that was your goal.”

“It was one of them.”

She walked away from the podium before he could respond.

Cassian watched her go, already wondering how long it would be before she created another problem for him.

Knowing Seraphina, probably not long.

Seraphina had been going through Bellamy’s operational reports for three hours when her ops director knocked and let herself in without waiting for an answer.“You need to see this.”“I need coffee more.”“You need to see this first.”Seraphina set her pen down and held out her hand for the folder. She scanned the first page, then the second, then went back to the first because she was certain she had misread it.“This is the terminal contract.”“The one attached to the cargo facility, yes.”“I read this before I closed the deal.”“You read the acquisition terms. This is the operational file. Nobody pulls the operational file until after close. That’s standard.”Seraphina kept reading. The terminal wasn’t just valuable because of the shipping lanes it touched. It was valuable because of exactly which lanes, the ones Devereaux Holdings had spent two years building an expansion plan around. Contracts were already signed downstream. Clients had already been promised delivery windows that

Chapter 15The card Talia gave her had migrated from Seraphina’s coat pocket to the zip compartment of her bag. Seraphina Voss did not keep things out of sentiment. She kept things because they were useful, and a phone number, technically, counted as useful. She ignored the fact that this was just another way for her to say she had enjoyed Talia’s comments at the boutique and would probably enjoy her company. She texted on a Thursday night. Technically, Talia had said to call, but she was pretty sure she wouldn’t mind.“This is Seraphina. From the boutique.”The reply came fast.“Knew you’d cave eventually. Coffee Saturday? There’s a place on Fifth, they don’t hover and rush you out after twenty minutes like every other coffee shop in this city seems contractually obligated to do.”“I’m not caving. I’m being neighborly.”“Sure you are. Ten o’clock. Don’t be late, I get twitchy waiting alone in public, I start inventing tragic backstories for strangers.”“I’m never late.”“We’ll see.”

Cassian noticed that there was something different about Seraphina Voss the moment she walked into the room."That's new," he said.Seraphina set her folder down at her usual seat. "What is?""The blazer." He tilted his head slightly, studying her with open curiosity. "Burgundy. Bold for a Tuesday.""I own more than one color, Mr. Devereaux.""Could have fooled me. I've catalogued at least four black jackets and one very aggressive navy in the weeks I've known you.""You've catalogued my wardrobe.""I notice things." He leaned back in his chair, entirely too pleased with himself. "It's a useful habit.."“Maybe you should turn that habit towards. Not blazers.”"I contain multitudes."Seraphina fought the smile threatening to show itself before she reached for her folder and pretended to be occupied with the agenda instead. "Are we discussing the quarterly integration report, or my closet?""Can it not be both?""No.""Shame. The closet conversation was more interesting." He opened his

Sundays belonged to the Voss house on the hill, the way they had every week for three years since she was announced CEO. It was always a much needed breather she always looked forward to. Kate was already in the kitchen when she let herself in, with her sleeves rolled up and flour on both cheeks , fighting a losing battle with what appeared to be a pie crust."You're early babygirl," Kate said, not looking up. "Which means either something's wrong or you actually missed us.""Can't it be both?""With you, it's usually both." Kate nodded toward the counter. "Wash your hands or nobody is getting to eat this pie "“Oh it’s a pie” Seraphina said as she washed her hands which earned her a glare and she took over. Kate watched her for a moment."You look happy today," Kate said. "Different happy. Not board meeting happy.""I bought a red blazer yesterday.""That's not an answer.""You asked and I answered Mum. Take it or leave it.Kate laughed, the same warm laugh Seraphina had come to lov

Seraphina Voss, CEO of Voss Holdings, terror of boardrooms and current aspiring architect of a man's downfall, sat on her kitchen counter at nine on a Saturday morning, eating cereal straight out of the box because she couldn't be bothered to find a bowl.Contrary to what society may believe, she preferred buying the cereal that came in sachets so she could dump her milk in and eat on the go rather than have to do dishes after. She hated doing dishes. She had the television on low, some baking competition she was not really watching, and her hair was piled on top of her head in a knot that would have horrified her assistant if anyone from the office ever saw it.She thought about the red dress anyway. She hated that she thought about the red dress.*A different look from your usual office dressing,* he'd said. He probably meant it to irk her but she had spent five years building a closet full of sharp, colorless armor, black, navy, the occasional cream when she wanted to look softer

The committee room was already half full by the time Seraphina took her seat, eight executives, most of them men who had run divisions of Devereaux Holdings since before Cassian took over the company.Cassian took the head of the table. "Everyone, this is Ms. Voss. As you know, her observer seat is part of the partnership terms. She has full visibility into everything discussed here, no exceptions."A woman near the far end, sharp-eyed, introduced a moment later as the CFO, Vivienne Norton, did not bother hiding her skepticism. "Full visibility is a generous term for a company that has been our competitor for the better part of a decade.""It's the term in the contract," Cassian said, mild but final. The meeting moved into quarterly projections, a dispute over headcount that clearly predated Seraphina by months. She said nothing for the first twenty minutes, watching instead."Ms. Voss." Vivienne's voice cut through the quiet. "You've been silent. Given your seat here, I'd be curious
