Chapter 3

Perfect Timing
The courtyard of the mansion my father had just bought for me had been completely remodeled into a mess. Clothes were even hung out to dry on the balcony.

Sarah stood at the entrance in her pajamas. She had her hands on her hips and was blocking the movers from going inside.

“Ms. Harper, are you sure this is the right place?”

The mover looked embarrassed, as though he had never encountered a situation like this. I then recalled what Robert and Margaret had said about helping Sarah pick out furniture for her new place. I had assumed that she had bought a new house and needed to furnish it. I never imagined that her new house was actually the mansion my father had given me.

I also remembered a phone call in which my father mentioned sponsoring a female student.

I looked at Sarah and roughly understood what was going on.

So the female boss Robert had been bragging about was nothing more than a fraud who used my house and pretended to be me to flaunt some wealth!

Robert, Rayan, and Margaret had all been fooled by Sarah. They genuinely believed they had latched onto a wealthy woman.

I was about to expose Sarah’s identity, but she spoke first. “Ms. Harper, my father bought this house for me. What are you even doing here? This is a high-end neighborhood, you know. You wouldn’t be able to afford anything you’d break. I know you don’t really have any family left on your side. Unlike me, my parents would give me the moon if I asked.”

She lazily ran her fingers through her hair with a smug expression.

I could not be bothered to argue with her. I took out the property deed and said calmly, “This house belongs to me. Get out now.”

After I said that, Rayan popped out from behind Sarah. He was holding the latest gaming console in his hands.

“Mom, don’t take this the wrong way, but there’s a limit to showing off. If you could actually afford a place like this, don’t you think I would already have gotten a gaming console? Did the surgery’s anesthesia mess up your head?”

Then Margaret came out and chimed in, “Grace, enough already. Quit humiliating yourself here.”

Sarah, standing nearby, laughed at the scene.

“Your mansion? People will laugh themselves silly. Not that I want to sound like I’m looking down on you, but with your four-thousand-a-month salary, you couldn’t afford this even if you worked forever. Besides, you don’t even have that four-thousand-dollar job anymore!”

She then turned to look at the security guards who had rushed over.

“So this is how you handle security? Letting any random person just walk in? If something goes missing, can you even afford to replace it?”

The security guards quickly smiled and apologized. Then they turned to glare at me with a threatening look.

“How did you get in here? You’ve got three minutes to leave, or I’m calling the police.”

The moving truck had blocked the entrance. Slowly, a crowd of onlookers gathered nearby.

“What’s going on here? I thought this mansion was a gift from Mr. Hartley to Ms. Hartley. Where did this other owner suddenly come from?”

“Is she a mad woman? Look at her outfit; it’s so plain. She doesn’t look like someone connected to the Hartley family.”

“Maybe she’s an illegitimate daughter.”

“Don’t talk nonsense. Mr. Hartley dotes on his wife like crazy. There’s no way he has an illegitimate daughter.”

Everyone was chattering away. Sarah listened to the constant stream of compliments. She looked extremely proud.

Robert suddenly pushed his way through the crowd.

After Robert left, he did not give up trying to reconcile with me.I threw all his gifts and flowers in the trash. When he showed up at my door to put on a performance of devotion, I turned a blind eye. Finally, one day, he stopped. I had a few days of peace. I thought he had come to his senses and expected to receive Robert’s divorce papers soon. What I did not expect was to receive a call from the police first. It turned out that Rayan had learned the famous chairman of the Hartley Corporation was his grandfather. After that, he began daydreaming about inheriting the family fortune. He skipped school. He also started forming gangs in the name of being the Hartley family’s grandson. That time, he got into a brawl and was detained at the police station. They could not reach Robert, so they called me. When I arrived at the police station, Rayan looked at me as if I were his savior.“Mom, I missed you so much! Get me out of here!”He looked at me sincerely while cursing me relentl

“Robert, I had the divorce papers ready a long time ago. If I weren’t leaving for good, I wouldn’t have moved my things here. Do you think I came here chasing after you and your family? Do you think I came to beg you to change your mind and forgive me? Get a grip! I already sold that house. The new owner will come in three days. You’d better be out by then, or I won’t be responsible for what happens.”After saying this, I made a signal to the bodyguard and walked into the mansion. I took everything Sarah had bought and threw it all out. Rayan’s gaming console was also smashed to pieces like trash.Robert, Rayan, and Margaret stood frozen in place as they watched the scene. It was only when I closed the front door that Rayan finally realized that I was abandoning them.He pushed through the crowd and wrapped his arms around my leg.“Mom? Why aren’t you coming back home with us?”I pried his hands off me and had the bodyguard drag him out. By then, Robert had also realized that I wa

Robert looked back and forth between Sarah and me. His face was full of hesitation. After pondering for a moment, he pulled Sarah into his arms. Then he looked at me with a bewildered expression. At the same time, I could hear his inner thoughts.“No matter what Grace is, she’ll never leave me. If I can keep both Hartley heiresses by my side, then I’ve got both career and family covered.”I turned my head away, trying to suppress the nausea rising in my stomach. I felt that if I looked at him any longer, I would vomit.“Sarah, I’m sorry you got dragged into this. If it weren’t for Grace, Mr. Hartley would have never gotten the wrong idea about you. It’s all her fault. She doesn’t work, and she has no ambition. All she does is create drama out of jealousy. I’ve spoiled her too much. That’s why she’s gotten so out of control. The Hartley family is filthy rich. What’s the big deal if they let us stay in one of their mansions?”I laughed out of sheer exasperation. The butler standing

I struggled to stand up with my father’s support. Ignoring the pain all over my body, I picked up the property deed from the floor and flung it at Sarah’s face.“You were a sponsored student funded by my father, Sarah. It seems you’ve had it too good for too long and forgotten who you really are.”As soon as I said this, everyone looked at each other in confusion. Even if they did not recognize me, they would certainly recognize my father from years of appearances on financial news channels. Robert initially tried to pull me away, worried that I might dirty my father’s expensive clothes. But when he saw how furious my dad was, he hesitated. “Grace, that’s enough. Stop making a fool of yourself out here.”I could not be bothered with him. I did not even feel like saying anything to prove my identity. The way my father gently comforted me already said everything. By then, the neighbors who had gathered had caught on. Public opinion shifted, and many began to speak up in my defense.

He was usually a clean freak dressed in a crisp suit. Today, he wore old work clothes and had cleaning supplies in hand. It seemed like he was there to help Sarah with the deep cleaning of her new home.My heart sank. During all the time we spent together, he had never lifted a finger for the housework. Not even during my postpartum confinement. He did not even know how to use a mop at home.“Sarah, it’s dusty over here. You should go inside. Your allergies will act up. You shouldn’t be breathing in this stuff!”“Exactly! Sarah, leave this to my dad and my grandma. You should go back inside and get your beauty sleep. Don’t waste your energy on someone who doesn’t matter.”Hearing this, Margaret immediately rolled up her sleeves and prepared to get to work. Robert and Rayan chattered on. Neither of them acknowledged me. I had cared for them at home for so many years. They had never once offered to help. When my own allergies started acting up, I asked Margaret to sweep under the b
