Synopsis

Winning Back the Wife

Bias

Scumbag

Independence

When my mom is rushed into the emergency room after a car accident, I call my doctor boyfriend, Henry Scott, eight times. Yet, he hangs up on every single call and only sends one message. "Mina twisted her ankle. I'm treating it right now. Tell your mom to wait." After eight years together, Henry has gotten used to making me wait. On our anniversary, he makes me wait while he watches the fireworks with his childhood sweetheart, Mina Stetson. When I am in extreme menstrual pain and book an appointment with him, he makes me wait because he is too busy replying to Mina's messages to see me. And now, my mom is seriously injured in a car accident. But Henry, her attending physician, still wants her to wait. Ultimately, I send him a single message. "Let's break up." I can wait for him, but I won't let my mom do the same.

Chapter 1
Sheila's POVAfter I sent the message, my boyfriend, Henry Scott, immediately called me.His voice was as cold as ice as he asked, "Why?""What?" I asked in confusion. He said, "Tell me why you want to break up. What are you up to this time?"I remained silent, staring at the lit red light in the operating room. Henry and I had been together for eight years.Yesterday afternoon, he said he wanted the homemade tamales my mom, Isla Lind, made. Overjoyed, Mom took an overnight train to Harton with the tamales.I was at work when she arrived at the station, so I had Henry pick her up instead. He agreed. But then, he forgot about it because he was busy helping Mina Stetson find her missing dog. He even forgot to call me to let me know.It was pouring rain across the city. Mom waited alone at the train station for four hours. Ultimately, she had no choice but to take a cab.But the roads were slippery, and a car rear-ended her. She was then rushed to the emergency room with multip

Chapter 2
Sheila's POVMina's post included a picture of Henry's back as he cooked in an apron. Those hands he always cherished so much, the ones he used to wield a scalpel with, were now holding a spatula as he busied himself for someone else in the warmth of the kitchen.Someone commented on the post, "You should marry such a great man!"Mina replied to it with a smirking emoji and liked the comment.Meanwhile, I hadn't sent Henry a single message all night. On the other side, as Henry stared at his silent phone, he found himself strangely unaccustomed to it.…The next morning, Mom woke up. The first thing she asked was, "Where are the tamales I brought? Are they all gone? I made those for Henry."My eyes welled up with tears as I pointed to the cabinet. "They're still here. I'll give them to him tonight."Mom sighed in relief. Then, she noticed her injuries, her face filled with guilt. She said sadly, "This is my fault. I rushed home because I didn't want the tamales to spoil."Hen

Chapter 3
Sheila's POVI used to hate Mina's pretentiousness, but at that moment, I couldn't be bothered with her. I looked straight at the trash bag in Henry's hand."What's in that?" I questioned him.Henry froze at my question, instinctively trying to hide the bag. "N-nothing. I-It's just garbage…"I didn't believe him and was about to question him again when Mina grabbed the trash bag and proudly emptied its contents in front of me.She said smugly, "Since Sheila wants to know what's inside, she can see for herself. It's not a big deal."Well, it wasn't a big deal to her. There were several torn-up photos of Henry and me, capturing the sweetest moments from our eight-year relationship. There were also broken shards of my favorite coffee cup. It was a gift from Henry for my 25th birthday, and I treasured it dearly. But that wasn't all. I also saw my cushions and vases in the trash bag.Everything that symbolized our eight-year relationship now lay shattered on the floor—and apparentl

Chapter 4
Sheila's POVBut this time, Henry wouldn't even give me a proper apology.I took a deep breath and replied, "If you really want to apologize, apologize to my mom in person."Henry spent a long time typing out a reply. Finally, he did. The text read, "Okay, I'll visit Isla at 8:00 pm tonight."…At 8:00 pm, I was sitting in the hospital room and looking at my phone.Henry never showed up.Mina had updated her X account with a new post. "The trip for two I've been looking forward to for so long. What makes her think she can compare to me?"The post had a photo of two plane tickets to Soria.I gave the post a like. Then, I texted Henry, asking, "Are you still coming over?"Ten minutes later, he replied, "Maybe next time. Mina's birthday is coming soon. She wants to go to Soria, so I'll take her there first.""What about my mom?" I asked. He replied, "Isla has been waiting for so long. What's a little longer?"I stared at his text. I refused to reply to that. It was pointless

Chapter 5
Third-Person POVHenry stared at the screen in shock. He couldn't believe it.They had been together for eight years. No matter how long he made her wait, Sheila had never disappeared on him before. He sent another text. "Sheila, what the hell is this?"Yet, the message remained undelivered. He finally decided to call her. However, only an automated voice greeted him, "Sorry, the number you have dialed is currently switched off."He stood at the airport exit, his expression turning dark.Mina came to his side with her suitcase and took his arm. "Henry, what's wrong?"He pulled his arm away and continued calling Sheila. One call became two, and two became three. Yet, her phone was still switched off.Mina pouted and said softly, "Is Sheila still angry? She just wants you to coax her a little. Don't worry, she loves you so much. She wouldn't break up with you for real."Upon hearing this, Henry relaxed slightly. Mina was right. Sheila wouldn't possibly leave him.In the past

Chapter 6
Third-Person POVThe curtains in the house had been replaced, and there were new carpets and sofa covers. The memories of the eight years Sheila and Henry had spent together were gone. The property manager arrived soon after. When he saw Henry, he realized who he was. "You must be Mr. Scott. Ms. Leston asked me to give these to you if you came back."He brought two cardboard boxes out of the management office. They contained Henry's things, including several shirts, some medical books, a razor, and everything he had ever given her. She hadn't taken them with her.She had taped the broken coffee cup together and placed it on top of everything. It was covered in cracks, a perfect representation of their eight-year relationship. The property manager took out another paper bag. "And there's this. Ms. Leston wants you to see it in person."He tore open the paper bag. There was only a piece of paper. It wasn't a love letter, nor was it a letter of complaint. It was a list. Sheila had

Third-Person POVThe nurse flipped through the records. "She was transferred this morning. Her family accompanied her back to her hometown."Henry's face turned even paler when he heard her words. "How badly was she injured?"The nurse looked up at him. She said in surprise, "You didn't know?"He remained silent. The nurse frowned. "Her life was in danger when she arrived. She had multiple fractures, broken ribs, a severely collapsed lung, and her blood dropped drastically at one point."When we were trying to save her in the emergency room, Ms. Leston was outside signing consent forms alone. Her hands were shaking so badly that she could barely hold the pen. She kept asking the doctor if her mother could be saved. We all felt very sorry for her."Henry swallowed. He felt as if he had been hit by a truck. What had he been doing that night? He was cooking at Mina's house. He said the power was out and that Mina was afraid of the dark.He said Isla had been waiting for so long an

Third-Person POVHenry suddenly turned to look at Mina and asked, "Do you know why I didn't pick up Isla that day?"A flicker of uncertainty appeared in Mina's eyes. She answered, "Wasn't it because my dog went missing?""Did your dog really go missing?" he retorted. She bit her lip nervously, then replied, "Of cour—"He opened his phone and clicked on Mina's post on X from that day. At 10:00 am, she had posted a selfie. The caption read, "Gummy has been so clingy today. He's just lying nearby and refuses to leave."In the photo, the supposedly missing dog was lying on the carpet.Henry froze at what he read. He finally realized he had been deceived. However, he realized something even more ridiculous. Even if Mina had lied to him, he had still chosen her over Sheila. He didn't go to the train station. He hung up on Sheila. He even said Isla could wait.He looked down, his voice hoarse as he uttered, "Mina, you lied to me."Mina panicked at his words. "I-I just wanted you

Chapter 9
Sheila's POVIn the days that followed, Zack often helped me. When Mom needed to go for a checkup, he helped wheel her there, and he even kept an eye on her IV drip while I was running late from buying food.He never crossed the line or tried to curry favor with us. He simply said, "It's no big deal."Mom really liked him. She whispered to me, "Zack seems honest and kind."I chuckled at her words. "Mom, you've only known him for a few days."Mom huffed at that. "I'm a good judge of character."I didn't think much of what she said. That afternoon, Zack was taking Mom to her follow-up appointment. Just as we reached the department, we noticed Henry. He had lost a lot of weight. There were also dark circles under his eyes, and he hadn't shaved properly. The shirt he was wearing was wrinkled. He looked nothing like the neat, well-put-together doctor I once knew. When he saw me, his eyes turned red. "Sheila."I stopped in my tracks. I felt nothing at all, as if I was just seeing s

Chapter 10
Sheila's POV"I won't give you another chance," I declared.Henry wanted to approach me again, but Zack immediately called security. When Henry was stopped, he stared at me unwaveringly. "Sheila, I won't give up."I turned Mom's wheelchair around and said softly yet firmly, "Suit yourself. I won't wait for you anyway."…Henry hadn't given up. In the past few days, he had come to the hospital every day. He brought flowers, fruit, supplements, and even a wedding ring. The nurse brought the things to the door of the ward and asked me if I wanted to keep them.Yet, I said, "Please return those."Henry's face turned ashen when he heard my words from where he was standing at the end of the corridor. He had even sent me many text messages."Sheila, I have looked at the list you left and realized how much I've wronged you.""I've rewritten and memorized every single offense of mine.""I won't make you wait anymore.""Let's get married, okay?"I simply texted. "Too late for that.
