Chapter 2

Autor: Pink Candy
A full two days later, Luca finally returned.

He pushed open the apartment door, followed by two bodyguards carrying luggage.

“I’m back.”

He loosened his collar, walked over, and bent to kiss my forehead. “Did you miss me, Chloe?”

I sat on the sofa and didn’t answer.

He turned, took a small box from one of the accompanying gift boxes, and placed it in front of me.

“For you.”

Inside was a bottle of seaweed-scented aromatherapy.

I looked at the label, and my fingertips paused.

“What’s wrong?”

Luca undid his cufflinks and glanced at the box casually.

“Vera said this brand smells nice, so I brought a bottle back. You can put it in the bedroom.”

I am allergic to seaweed extracts.

Three years ago, I had used a skincare product containing that ingredient once, and my face quickly broke out in large red rashes.

That night Luca had personally called a private doctor and stayed with me until dawn.

The next day, he had ordered every product containing that ingredient cleared from the estate.

He had held my hand and seriously promised that he would never let me come into contact with those things again.

Yet now, he had even forgotten the words he himself had spoken.

I closed the box.

“Thank you.”

Luca seemed to find my reaction cold and was about to speak when the butler brought in a black gift box.

He took it, carefully inspected the packaging, then placed it back in the drawer beside the safe.

“This is for Vera. She’s attending a charity gala next week, so I had this handmade pearl hair clip specially made for her.”

I looked at him.

“She asked you to buy it?”

“She just mentioned it casually once.”

Luca spoke as if it were the most natural thing in the world.

“Since she likes it, I’ll give it to her.”

I lowered my gaze to the aromatherapy bottle in front of me and suddenly lost all desire to speak.

He could remember something Vera had mentioned offhand, yet forget what I couldn’t touch.

That evening, his mother, Mrs. Moretti called.

“Chloe, have you finished organizing the guest list for the wedding?”

“Not yet.”

“Why haven’t you finished it yet? Vera came to the estate today to discuss the banquet arrangements with me and has already gone through the list and seating for you. She said some family seating can’t be disordered, or people will laugh.”

I gripped the phone and paused.

“Madam, that is my wedding.”

“I know.” Her tone was flat. “But you’re about to marry into the Moretti family. You can’t only consider your own preferences. Vera has grown up in these occasions and understands the rules better than you.”

Luca came out of the study and heard the last sentence.

“Whose call is that?”

“Your mother’s.”

I put it on speaker.

Mrs. Moretti continued: “And the wedding dress—I’ve already had someone rearrange it. The one you chose earlier wasn’t flattering. Vera helped pick a new one. I’ll send it to you to look at.”

Soon a picture arrived.

The dress I had originally chosen was one with special meaning. A simple satin gown with no excess decoration, only a row of tiny pearls at the waist.

The one Vera had chosen was a crystal-encrusted trailing gown with layers of skirt spreading out, as magnificent as if prepared for a princess in a fairy tale.

Luca glanced at it and nodded. “This one is nice, better suits your status than the previous one.”

I looked up at him.

“Have you seen the one I chose?”

He hesitated. “I have.”

“What did you think of it?”

He thought for a moment.

“It was fine too, but Vera’s is still better-looking.”

I suddenly smiled.

It seemed he had long forgotten that the dress was one he had personally designed for me five years ago.

He had held my hand and drawn it stroke by stroke, telling me that on our wedding day he must watch me put on that dress and walk toward him.

But the moment Vera appeared, it seemed only she remained in his eyes.

On the other end of the line, Mrs. Moretti was still instructing.

“Chloe, getting married isn’t children’s play. You’ll still have a lot to learn. With Vera helping you, you should be grateful to her…”

I hung up directly.

Luca’s expression darkened.

“Chloe, what are you doing?”

“I don’t want to keep listening.”

“My mother is also doing this for the sake of the wedding.”

“And you?” I looked at him. “Luca, have you ever thought about what kind of wedding I want?”

He frowned.

“What’s wrong with you lately? Vera is just helping. Do you have to make an issue out of even this?”

It was the same as always.

The moment Vera was mentioned, my disappointment became nitpicking, and my concern became immaturity.

I looked at him and suddenly felt exhausted.

I didn’t argue further.

He thought I was throwing a tantrum.

Just like every time in the past, as long as he coaxed me a little, I would actively yield.

But this time, I no longer wanted to.

Luca picked up the aromatherapy from the table and casually handed it to the butler.

“Put it in the bedroom.”

I finally spoke.

“Take it away.”

He turned.

“Why?”

“Because I’m allergic to seaweed extracts.”

Luca’s movement froze.

I watched his expression gradually stiffen and didn’t wait for his explanation before standing and returning to the room.

In two days I would leave Sicily.

And Luca Moretti still didn’t know that the wedding he thought could be postponed again and again no longer had any chance of being rescheduled.

I had simply underestimated Luca’s persistence.I thought that after speaking so clearly yesterday, he had given up pestering me.Yet the next morning, the moment I pushed open the apartment door, I saw him standing at the end of the hallway. He wore the same black suit as yesterday, with obvious dark circles under his eyes, and held breakfast in his hands. He held the breakfast out to me, his tone extremely careful.“I didn’t know what you like to eat, so I had several kinds prepared. I also found the dessert shop you used to like best.”I didn’t take it.“Luca, didn’t I make myself clear enough yesterday?”His hand stiffened in midair.“I know you’re still angry with me.”“I’m not angry.”I looked at him and said word by word.“I simply no longer want any relationship with you.”He seemed not to understand and still stubbornly pushed the breakfast forward.“Then we can start over. If you don’t want to return to Sicily, I’ll stay in Boston. If you don’t want to see me, I can wait. As

“What are you doing here?”Luca’s hand holding the roses tightened slightly. He probably hadn’t expected that the first words I would say upon seeing him would be these.“Chloe, I’ve come to take you home.”As he spoke, he pushed the bouquet a little farther forward.“I’ve been looking for you for three whole months. Sicily, New York, London—I’ve searched almost every place you might have gone.”I didn’t take the flowers.“So what?”Luca’s face went pale for an instant. The next second, he suddenly knelt on one knee in front of me.A wave of gasps immediately rose around us.He took a diamond ring from his pocket and held it up before me.“Chloe, marry me.”His voice was a little hoarse.“I know I’ve done many things wrong. I shouldn’t have disappointed you again and again, and I especially shouldn’t have abandoned you on our wedding day. But I swear, something like this will never happen again.”He looked up at me, his eyes full of pleading.“Let’s hold the wedding again, okay? Wherev

Chloe PovBy the third month in Boston, I had gradually adapted to life here.A new apartment, a new job, and days when I no longer had to constantly wait for someone’s messages.I worked as a product researcher at an artificial intelligence technology company, mainly responsible for user experience testing of the emotional interaction system. The work was busy, but fulfilling in just the right way.At least I no longer had to temporarily change my own plans for anyone.“Good morning, Chloe.”As soon as I walked into the office, a cup of hot coffee was handed to me.I looked up and met Xavier’s smiling eyes.“Oat milk latte, no sugar.” He raised his brows. “I remembered correctly, right?”I took the coffee and smiled.“If one day you remember my project data this clearly, I’ll give you an award.”“That strict?” He sighed in mock disappointment. “Looks like one cup of coffee isn’t enough to impress Miss White.”“Then what else do you want?”“At least a chance to have dinner together.”H

Luca PovBy the time I returned to the estate, it was already dark. The butler heard the movement and immediately came to greet me.“Sir, you’re back.”I took off my coat and scanned the empty living room.“Where is Chloe?”The butler paused.“Miss White left early this morning.”My steps halted.“Left? Where did she go?”“This… I’m not sure. Miss White only took her own luggage and had the driver take her to the airport.”I abruptly turned.“Why didn’t anyone tell me?”The butler lowered his head, not daring to speak.I strode up to the second floor and pushed open the bedroom door.In the walk-in closet, more than half of Chloe’s clothes were gone. The dressing table was empty; the drawers that had once been filled with skincare products had been cleaned out completely. On the nightstand, the wristwatch she had given me was still there.I picked it up and discovered a note underneath. On it was only one short sentence.【Luca, this is the end for us.】My fingers suddenly tightened.“S

Luca PovThe ring in my hand fell to the ground as I abruptly looked at the planner.“What did you say?”The planner’s face turned white with fear.“Mr. Moretti, Miss White canceled the wedding four days ago. All arrangements have already been terminated.”“Impossible!”I interrupted her sharply.Chloe had waited for me for five years. She had said that marrying me was her greatest dream.I refused to believe she would abandon me.The planner trembled as she took out her phone and handed me the cancellation notice Chloe had sent. After reading the message, I immediately dialed her number.Powered off.I dialed again—still the same.“Find out where she is!”I turned and ordered my assistant.Ten minutes later the assistant hurried over.“Sir, the last place Miss White appeared was the airport. After that there’s no news.”“Check all flights and ports. Mobilize the family’s people. No matter what, find her!”I clenched my phone and turned to look at the empty ceremonial platform.Just th

On the morning of the wedding day, Luca put on his suit early. When he pushed open the bedroom door, I was still in my pajamas, just having gotten up.He paused.“Chloe, why haven’t you changed into the wedding dress yet?”I looked up at him and lied:“I’ll put it on in a bit.”Luca walked over smiling.“I almost thought you didn’t want to marry me.”He bent to kiss my forehead, but I turned my head aside. His movement paused slightly, yet he didn’t press the matter, treating it as pre-wedding nerves.“All right, stop throwing a tantrum. After the ceremony, I’ll take you on our honeymoon. Haven’t you always wanted to go to Paris? This time we’ll stay a few extra days.”I looked at him and softly answered,“Okay.”He seemed a little surprised by my reaction. In the past, whenever he mentioned our wedding, I couldn’t help smiling and pulling him into discussions about where to go after the ceremony and what kind of hotel to stay in for the honeymoon. But today, even looking at him more f
