Chapter 4

작가: Anonymous
The neon signs around me started to blur, and my head felt heavy. I figured I should get home while I still had enough sense to find my way.

The second I stepped outside, I saw Sophie and Dylan not far down the street, arm in arm and taking a walk together.

Half my buzz vanished on the spot. My friend, Owen Jacklin, saw them too, but he didn't know what to say.

Then, an idea hit me.

"Call Sophie for me. Tell her I'm drunk and I need her to come pick me up," I said.

Owen hesitated, but he made the call.

If she came for me right away, I'd forgive everything, the affair, the baby, all of it.

One second, two seconds, three, and then the flat tone of a rejected call.

They were already out of sight, but I kept staring in the direction they'd gone. Something hardened inside me in that moment, something I couldn't let go of.

Owen looked at me but said nothing.

"Call again."

He dialed. She hung up again.

I wouldn't accept it. I kept making him call.

Finally, she picked up.

"Hey, Miles, what's going on? I was in the middle of something, and my phone was on silent, so I didn't hear you. Is something urgent?"

Owen waited until she was done, glanced at me, then spoke. "I'm a friend of Miles's. He's pretty drunk. Can you come get him?"

There was silence on the other end for a few seconds.

"I can't get away right now. Could you just take him home for me?"

Then she hung up.

Everything around me went quiet. The only sound was the dead tone of a disconnected line.

After a long moment, I let out a bitter laugh. I told Owen to go home. I wanted to be alone for a while.

It was late, and the streets were mostly empty. I just walked, replaying everything Sophie and I used to have over and over in my head.

She'd been like sunlight breaking into a life that had been nothing but shadows, pulling me out of the mud and giving me something bright to hold on to. She gave me something that felt like hope and happiness.

I believed she loved me. Maybe she always had.

Without realizing it, I wandered into an unfamiliar neighborhood. Then I heard Sophie's voice coming from somewhere nearby.

I ducked into the shadows. Two silhouettes passed right by me.

"You need to take it easy now and stop running around everywhere. Don't worry about the company for a while. I'll handle things."

That was Dylan.

Sophie laughed softly. "Okay, okay, I know. When did you get so naggy…"

Their voices faded down the street.

I watched Sophie and Dylan walk into a house together. Warm light spilled through the doorway, bright enough to illuminate every miserable thing I was feeling. I stood there staring at that glow as it flickered on, then dimmed.

I stayed there until morning.

When Sophie and Dylan finally came out, I couldn't stop myself from following.

I pulled out my phone and called her. She picked up fast this time.

"Miles? You sobered up?"

"Yeah. I'm fine."

"Don't drink so much next time, okay? It's bad for you." Her concern was as gentle as it had always been.

"Where are you right now? Can you come home and just be with me for a while?"

But even as the words left my mouth, I realized I wasn't really expecting anything.

"I'm still at the office. I've got a doctor's appointment after this. Just rest at home, and I'll come back tonight to be with you."

I already knew the answer would be another disappointment. I'd gotten so used to it by now that it barely even registered.

"Okay. I'll be waiting."

I stopped walking and didn't follow any further. I turned around and headed in the opposite direction.

I didn't have time to think. I just moved forward, needing to see if it was really her. When Sophie saw me, she froze too. Then, panic set in. "Miles? What… What are you doing here?"I just looked at her. Before I could say a word, Dylan spoke up first."Miles, don't blame Sophie. I'm the one who talked her into keeping the baby. And honestly, can you stop being so selfish? All Sophie wants is a child of her own. If you can't give her that, then you have no right to blame her."I turned a cold stare on Dylan, and that alone was enough to shut him up.Sophie stepped in front of Dylan, shielding him behind her. "If you're angry, take it out on me. Don't drag him into this."I realized I couldn't speak. My whole body was shaking. Sophie saw something was wrong and grabbed my hand, but I shook her off."What are you doing? Are you out of your mind? What if you hurt Sophie?" Dylan shouted.I fought to keep myself under control. "Sophie, you told me you weren't keeping the baby."

The tears of relief washed away every bit of pain I'd been carrying. After that, Sophie and I went back to the way things used to be. But something about her felt off, though I couldn't put my finger on what. She was coming home less and less. I was still turning it over in my head when her call interrupted my thoughts."Miles, there's a big project at work, and I need to be hands-on with it. I probably won't be home for a while, so make sure you're taking care of yourself, okay?"I replied, "I will, Soph. Don't overdo it either, okay? Look after yourself."And when you get back, I've got a surprise for you."Sophie kept pressing me about what it was, but I held firm. She'd have to wait until she came home. After we made up, I went to the hospital. The doctor told me there was a strong chance the reversal would work. It wouldn't be long before I'd recover, and when I did, Sophie and I could have a baby of our own.The timing was perfect. I could get it all done while she was aw

The next day, Sophie brought me to the place where I'd spent an entire night standing outside in the dark.I stepped inside, and a familiar scent washed over me. I took in every corner of the house. So this was her second home.Dylan was waiting for me upstairs. Sophie didn't come along and stayed in the living room on the first floor.I pushed open the study door. Dylan was standing by the window. When he saw me, he adjusted the glasses on his nose, looking completely at ease."Mr. Norris. It's been a while."I didn't respond. I just walked in and sat down.He didn't seem bothered. He smiled. "What brings you here today?"I looked at him. "Do you actually have real feelings for Sophie?"Dylan raised an eyebrow. "Of course I do."I'll be honest with you. I fell for Sophie the very first time I saw her. That night we went out for a business dinner, I was taking her drinks, and she was taking mine. We both ended up wasted. Nothing was supposed to happen between us."But you kno

My parents left for factory work in the city when I was little. They died in a car accident not long after, and I never saw them again. If the town council hadn't stepped in, Uncle Tom would never have taken me in. So when I met Sophie, it was the first time in my life I knew what it felt like to be loved, and how much happiness there was in loving someone back. But once again, I'd been left behind."Sophie and I are getting a divorce."I said it so calmly that it took them a moment to process. It wasn't until Aunt Margaret snapped out of it that the screaming started."What? You and Sophie are getting a divorce?"I finished eating, got up, and went back to my room without a second glance at the two of them panicking behind me.I expected them to come banging on my door, but when dinnertime came around, they just called me out to eat like normal. I was still wondering why when I walked in and saw Sophie sitting at the table.I froze. It wasn't until Uncle Tom called my name tha

The words came out harsher than I expected, but Sophie never imagined I'd become a completely different person."All because of that baby?" she asked."All because of that baby."It was short and simple. I wasn't interested in playing the heartbroken husband anymore."Come back. Let's sit down and talk about this properly."I sighed, almost amused. "Talk about it properly? We've talked about it plenty of times, Ms. Souza, and your answer has never changed. What's the point of doing it again?"She went quiet.I softened a little despite myself. "Sophie, you chose the baby, and I respect that. I just can't live with it. So going our separate ways is the best thing for both of us.""And if I say no?" There was a fierce, unmovable resolve in her voice."I've done everything I can. Goodbye, Sophie. I hope you find happiness."I hung up.I stared at the wide open sky above me, the same shade of blue as the sky back home. As far back as I could remember, that blue sky was the only

  • I Chose Dignity When She Chose Her Affair   Chapter 5

I went home and spent the rest of the day doing nothing, just sitting there and staring at the walls. At some point, while sitting in the bedroom, something crossed my mind. I went back and forth on it a few times, but eventually I made up my mind and did it.Afterward, I realized I was hungry. I got up, went to the kitchen, and started frying an egg. The pan sizzled, and the smell of the egg drifted through the apartment.I ended up zoning out again, just standing there watching the egg cook, until Sophie's voice snapped me out of it."That smells amazing. Are you making eggs?"I looked up, startled to see her standing in the doorway."Perfect timing, I'm starving too."I almost couldn't believe it. I thought I was seeing things until she walked over and wrapped her arms around me."I'm sorry I haven't been around much lately," she said.I held her back. "It's okay.""Can you make me your pasta? I've been craving it."She smiled at me, eyes soft and warm, exactly the way sh
