Chapter 2

Autor: Forest Deer
I looked at Hubert Ellerbee before my gaze settled on the gift in his hands.

He tilted his head slightly, instinctively hiding the box behind his back.

Right then, Alesha poked her head out of her private room.

"Hubie, you're five minutes late! I'm going to have to punish you!"

Hubert stepped forward and handed her the gift.

"I got held up on the way. Here, I brought you a gift."

Then, he turned slightly toward me, an apologetic look in his eyes. "Kathleen, I'll explain everything to you later."

I stood there, motionless.

Just an hour earlier, he'd told me he was visiting family friends with his parents, so he wouldn't be able to answer my messages that night. What he hadn't told me was that the "family friend" happened to be my birth mother.

And even more than that, I never expected that the childhood friend I'd grown up right with—the boy I'd split a cookie with—would share such an intimate connection with Alesha.

The smile on Alesha's lips faded as her gaze shifted to me. "Kathleen? You're Kathleen Holloway?"

Before I could answer, she called back over her shoulder, "Mom, guess what? Kathleen snuck in here to see you!"

Everyone's eyes shifted toward me.

I lightly gripped the hem of my shirt and turned to look at Mom.

The smile on her face hadn't receded in time, freezing stiffly at the corners of her mouth.

"Oh, it's you," she remarked before clearing her throat awkwardly. "You've gotten so tall I didn't even recognize you."

I let go of my shirt. "I didn't sneak in here to see you."

She blinked and walked over. "Then why are you here?"

"I'm working to earn money for living expenses."

Her eyes swept over me from head to toe. "Why are you dressed like that? Are you deliberately trying to humiliate me?"

Lowering her voice, she continued, "We're celebrating Alesha's College Entrance Exam scores today. I don't have time to chat with you. You can go find your dad. He's right next door."

With that, she knocked on the neighboring private room.

"Earl, your daughter's here."

"What daughter? I only have a son—"

Dad's eyes landed on me. After staring for a few seconds, he opened his mouth and forced out an awkward laugh.

"What are you doing here?"

He stepped closer to the doorway and lowered his voice.

"It's your brother's birthday today. There are a lot of guests here in the room, so this isn't a good time. Whatever it is you need, we can talk tomorrow."

He glanced at Mom.

"This really isn't a good time. You're her mother. She must be here for you."

Mom pursed her lips. "I'm busy too. You're her father. She's your responsibility."

A spark of tension flared between the two.

"Her last name is Holloway, so she belongs to you Holloways. Why are you trying to push her onto me?" Mom sniped, her voice sharpening.

A vein at Dad's temple started to pulse.

"I didn't make her all by myself. Why are you dumping her on me?"

Once again, I had become the ball they kicked back and forth. It had always been this way since I was a child.

They'd argue over who had to cook for me and whose turn it was to pay for my school tuition. Later, when we went to court, the judge had asked which parent I wanted to live with. But Mom rushed to say her salary was too low to support me, while Dad complained that it wasn't practical for a man to raise a daughter by himself.

They argued until their faces turned red. It was as if they were trying to get rid of a defective product neither of them wanted.

Years had passed, and I was still the same burden they couldn't wait to get rid of.

I took a deep breath and cut them off.

"Neither of you needs to worry about me. I didn't come here looking for either of you in the first place."

  • I Cut Ties With a Broken Home   Chapter 10

As I looked at Hubert, I remembered the cookies we'd split in half when we were kids, and how he'd smiled and promised he'd always protect me.But now, he was no different from a stranger.I shook my head."No need."Hubert froze for a moment before reaching out to grab my arm. I took a step back and avoided him. Not wanting to drag things out, I got straight to the point."Hubert, after the College Entrance Exam last year, I overheard your mother telling you to stay away from me."She said that kids like me who grew up without their parents around were bound to have personality flaws. You didn't refute that back then. Later, I figured out why. You agreed with her."The color drained from his face. His lips moved, but not one word came out.Mom stood there in silence as well, clearly not expecting to hear something like that."Don't come bothering me again," I said flatly. "My life has been a lot happier without any of you."Without waiting to see anyone's reaction, I got int

Time flew by.Before I knew it, winter break had arrived. Since it coincided with the anniversary of Grandma's passing, I made a trip back to Jethroville. The dry, cold wind stung my face.I knelt before Grandma's headstone and carefully set down a bouquet of fresh white lilies. My fingertips brushed across the ice-cold stone surface as I said, "Grandma, I earned a full first-class scholarship this semester. You don't have to worry about me. I'm doing really well."The sound of a dry branch snapping echoed behind me.I turned around to find Dad standing a few steps away. He looked like he'd ballooned a bit since the last time I saw him, and there was more gray hair at his temples.Rubbing his hands together, he spoke in a cautious, placating tone."When did you come back, Kathleen? Why didn't you say anything?"I didn't stand up, choosing instead to just look at him silently. He shifted uncomfortably and avoided my eyes. After a long pause, he finally squeezed out, "If you'd t

A notification popped up on my phone. It was a friend request from an unfamiliar number, with a verification message reading, "I'm Hubert."I stared at the screen for a few seconds before tapping on the decline button. Almost immediately, a text message flashed across the screen."Kathleen, I know you're reading this. Your parents are going out of their minds. They've been asking around every day, trying to get information about you."Given that they're your biological parents, can you give them a chance?"I looked at the words on the screen and almost laughed.Give them a chance? Had they ever given me one?Where had they been when I was burning with a 104°F fever, and Grandma had to hold me up and hail a cab at the same time, all in the pouring rain?Where had they been when I got accepted into one of the state's top high schools and wanted to share my joy with them?Where had they been when Grandma was critically ill and hospitalized, and I had to run around the hospital all

Late summer in Granton brought a salty sea breeze that drifted across the college campus.I stood outside the front gates with my suitcase, looking up at the college's name gleaming in gold—Granton University. The heavy stone that had weighed on my heart for years finally lifted. My full scholarship was enough to cover tuition, and the work-study program I had applied for would cover my living expenses. As for the money from selling the apartment, I'd put it into a fixed-term deposit.I still remembered that when Grandma found out she had cancer, the only person she was worried about was me.She would often sigh and say, "Kathleen, both of your parents can't be counted on. You're still so young. When I'm gone, who's going to take care of you?"I'd only just started high school back then and was living in the dorms, only coming home once every two weeks.Grandma had gotten so thin that she was practically skin and bones, yet she'd still insist on standing in the kitchen to cook me

"Are you out of your mind?" Dad exploded. "I came here with you!""Then how could she have sold the house behind my back?" Mom blurted out. "You just want to keep that one million dollars to yourself so you can give it to your son, don't you?""Bullshit!" Dad snapped back, jabbing a finger at her. "I should be asking you that! Weren't you after this house precisely because of your stepdaughter?""This apartment belongs to us Holloways! It was never going to go to you or your stepdaughter anyway!"The two of them sat in the dusty hallway, pointing fingers and hurling insults. They lashed out at each other, dredging up all the wrongs that had driven them to divorce years ago and every hurt that had followed since. Each accusation was more vicious than the last, yet the daughter who had once taken the brunt of their anger was no longer there to bear it.When they finally grew exhausted from the yelling, Mom, breathing heavily, suddenly thought of something. She quickly pulled out he

"One of the top scorers?" Mom's voice shot up, sharp enough to make anyone's ears hurt. "What do you mean the previous occupant was a top scorer in this year's College Entrance Exam? This is my daughter's apartment!"Frowning and looking impatient, Marcus, who was holding the tape measure, stopped what he was doing."Ma'am, are you guys mistaken? This apartment was sold to me just yesterday. I have the title deed right here. The previous owner's name was Kathleen Holloway. She told us she doesn't have any family left. Are you really her mother?""Kathleen Holloway is our daughter!" Mom yelped.Dad, finally snapping out of it, grabbed Marcus by the collar. "She's my daughter! Did you trick her into signing a contract? My mother left this apartment to us. Kathleen's just a young girl. How can she possibly sell this apartment without our permission?"Marcus' face flushed red from how tightly Dad was grabbing him. He shoved Dad away with all his strength before brushing off his shirt
