The three of them drove around in hope of finding the institute. Even when the GPS kept misleading them. Finally, they found a small townhouse that stood out because of its lack of decoration. Just a small bronze plaque that read: Icarus private consultations.

They parked across the street and tried to gather information from there.

"Three heat signatures on the ground floor," Matthew reported without looking up from his device. "Two stationed guards near the door. One person in the back that is likely the surgeon."

"And the upper floors?" Aser asked.

"Walled off with lead." Cassie said. "My scanner can't penetrate the recovery rooms. If Cane is recovering from surgery, he's up there."

Aser nodded. "We go in quiet. If the Weaver is mid-procedure, we don't want to startle him. A slip of the scalpel kills him."

"I want him alive, Aser. He needs to stand trial."

"We'll try," Aser promised, though his tone suggested he wouldn't try very hard.

On his signal, they left the vehicle w

The next day was the Summit, and Cassie didn't anticipate how nervous she would feel taking a global stage. Sure, she had given dozens of speeches back home, but this was a completely different continent. The Green Room was the room the organizers had assigned to Cassie for her to get ready. Makeup artists, tech support, and assistants buzzed around, prepping for the keynote speech that would open the Global Logistics Summit. In the midst of the chaos, Cassie Stone stood calmly in her midnight blue suit. Her hair was pulled back in a sleek, severe ponytail that exposed the sharp line of her jaw. Aser was right by her side, looking handsome in a charcoal Armani suit, but his energy was wrong. He kept looking at the door as if he was expecting Cane to come through the door any minute. Now that he couldn't rely on his sense of smell to sniff him out, he wanted to make sure he had eyes on the door at all times. "Aser," Cassie said softly. "Stop."Aser froze and turned to her. "He could

About three hours into their trip, Cassie had fallen asleep with her head resting on her laptop, a spreadsheet reflecting on her cheek. Aser, ever the protective boyfriend, had draped a blanket over her and was currently dozing in the seat across from her. Everyone was calm and quiet. Miriam sighed, closing the curtain that shielded them quietly behind her, and went in search of coffee. The excitement from earlier was wearing off, replaced by the need to make sure everything went smoothly. The Alpha was counting on her to organize their schedule. "We are entering a pocket of low-pressure air," a deep voice rumbled from behind her, and she jumped, nearly making her drop her cup. "Jesus, Matthew!" she hissed. "Do you have to be so quiet? You're like a piece of furniture, except you talk." Matthew was seated behind her, cleaning his favorite gun. He didn't even look up at her. "I don't lurk," Matthew stated flatly. "You should be more aware of your surroundings. You should also

The adrenaline of the weekend had faded, replaced by the soulless work of cleanup. That morning, Cassie sat at the head of the table in one of the boardrooms. She was dressed down today in a soft gray sweater and cotton slacks with her hair pulled back in a messy bun. She looked tired, but her eyes were focused on the screen in front of her."The director’s hard drive is encrypted," Cassie muttered, her fingers dancing over her keyboard. "Standard for corporate criminals, but annoying.""Can you crack it?" Aser asked. He was pacing the room, sipping coffee. For some reason, he was restless."Give me ten minutes," Cassie said, not looking up. "The director is arrogant. He didn't think anyone would ever physically hold this drive. He used a localized passkey.""Update on the prisoners." Matthew announced and covered his speaker. "Varga is singing like a bird. He’s trying to cut a deal for witness protection. He confirmed that the Syndicate has been laundering money for Cane for two yea

The next morning, Cassie woke up in the master bedroom of their house, where the air was warm and still compared to outside, where the storm had just subsided. Cassie woke up slowly. Her body felt heavy and light at the same time, yet every muscle ached. Her ribs throbbed where Aser had tackled her, and her knees were scraped raw from the slide across the concrete. She opened her eyes and stared at the ceiling, waiting for the sound of an orange explosion ringing, but nothing happened. There was only silence. "You're awake." Aser's voice rumbled from beside her. Cassie turned her head on the pillow to find her man lying on his side, watching her. His eyes were usually gold when he was being an Alpha, but this morning, they were a warm, chocolate brown. "How long have you been watching me?" "About an hour." Aser admitted, reaching out to brush a stray hair from her face. "I just wanted to make sure you were really here. That yesterday wasn't a hallucination." Cassie closed her e

"Slow down," Varga hissed at his lieutenant, who was driving them to safety. "You're going to get us pulled over. And if the cops stop us before I can dispose the remote in my pocket, I'm going to kill you." "I’m driving the limit, boss," the lieutenant argued, sweat beading on his forehead. "But we’re exposed out here. We need cover." Varga looked at his phone to see that the director had sent a set of coordinates. It wasn't the usual safehouse it was even more fortified with security. It was the Syndicate’s main building in the city, and the location was mostly kept a secret. "Take the next exit." Varga ordered. "Are you sure? That’s a dead end." "Just drive!" Varga checked the sky through the window. It was pitch black so he couldn't see anything. "We lost them," Varga whispered, trying to convince himself. "The blast must have scrambled their comms. They’re probably still digging bodies out of the rubble." He smiled cruelly. Yes, he hadn't killed her, but he couldn't imagine
