Chapter 1

Author: Little Star
Seven years ago, I took on an urgent mission from my organization. As a result, I had to fake my death and go undercover abroad.

To compensate me, the leader of the organization gave me a villa in the city center. It was worth over a hundred million dollars. This way, my daughter and son would have a roof over their heads while I was gone.

I never thought that the two children I treasured would be violently thrown out of their own home.

I was burning with anger and ready to confront Martin Gray.

However, when my call went through, an arrogant woman answered instead.

“Who are you, crazy woman? Mr. Gray only answers Miss Jenny’s calls when he’s having his meals.

“Don’t push your luck, you shameless social climber!”

The next second, she hung up without giving me a chance to speak.

I froze in disbelief.

I knew Martin’s rule about not answering calls during meals. But he once told me that I was an exception.

Hence, I had kept my old number when I faked my death for seven years. I was afraid that he would feel guilty if he hung up on me by mistake.

Yet, the one exception to his rule had become someone else.

For seven years, my longing for him carried me through countless life-and-death situations.

However, just before we could reunite, he struck me with such a heavy blow.

Seeing me lose face, Jenny sneered.

“I thought you had some pull. Turns out you’re just some woman who got into bed with him before.

“Trying to get him into a love scam, aren’t you? Take a good look at yourself first.”

I took a deep breath and closed my eyes to suppress my anger.

It was not that I could not accept Martin being with another woman. When I took that dangerous undercover mission, I was already prepared to make sacrifices. I did not expect him to stay single for me forever.

Even so, he had promised to take care of our children and always keep them happy.

Yet, my son was all skin and bones, while my daughter’s face had a yellow tint from malnutrition. At the age when they should be growing, they were so frail. It looked like a gust of wind could knock them over.

It hurt to see them huddled together and covered in bruises. They were clinging to each other as if their lives depended on it, and my heart felt like it was being torn apart.

“Don’t be scared. I’ll take you kids far away.”

I held their hands on either side and did not even think about settling scores. I just wanted to get them home and take care of them.

How could I not make up for those seven lost years?

However, just as I was ready to spare them this once, someone insisted on getting in my way and provoking me.

“Leaving? You hurt my dogs and think you can leave?”

Jenny let out a mocking laugh.

“Bodyguards, arrest them all!

“A witch like you is trying to play the hero? I’ll show you who really rules here.”

The bodyguards in the yard surrounded us, and the three vicious dogs I had knocked down got back on their feet. They bared their teeth and eyed us like they were ready to pounce.

I quickly shielded the children behind me and shouted, “Jenny, don’t you dare!”

“From this day forth, you won’t be on record as John and Katy’s father. Their surname will be changed from yours to mine. They’re my children, and they’re children of this country, but they’ll never be yours again. You’re not worthy.”Martin fell heavily to his knees. His last shred of hope was gone, and his will had been completely broken. He knew with absolute clarity that he was finished.Several guards pulled him away from me and forced him to the ground. They held him there as the villa that once carried the Gray name was reduced to rubble by the bulldozers.Jenny was screaming and thrashing hysterically, but she was also restrained. Both she and her dogs were fitted with muzzles. When the dust settled, the construction foreman hurried over with two video recordings in hand.“Miss Jessica, we found these while clearing the surveillance database. We thought you might want them.”Harry quickly got someone to bring the equipment to play the footage. One recording showed five

Martin froze at first.Leslie’s voice was trembling, and she was on the verge of tears.“Mr. Gray, the Tax Bureau just came in with a team to audit us! W-We haven’t even finished updating our books!“Jason and Christina have already been taken away! The Tax Bureau people are still here, and they’re asking for you!”Martin’s vision darkened, and he nearly coughed up blood. He could not comprehend it. He had been meticulous with the books for seven years, so how could they suddenly have found any mistakes? Then, something occurred to him, and his head snapped up. His eyes burned into me with fury.“Jessica, it’s you!”“It must have felt good when you were evading taxes.”I looked at him with a calm, almost airy smile.“The organization has repeatedly let you off the hook because of my service. They took into account the fact that you’re the family of a decorated operative. They didn’t want to make me lose face.“But when I made that call twenty minutes ago, I also filed for di

Harry’s palm struck Martin in the face.“A regular government worker? Say that again!” Harry’s face turned red, and his voice was filled with fury as he pointed a finger at Martin.“You can go and get yourself killed, but don’t you dare drag me down with you!“Do you even know who Miss Jessica is, huh?“She’s the chief commander of ‘Operation White Hawk.’ She spent seven full years undercover along our national border! Her medals could stack up more than the years in your life! If she says one word today, forget your little family, even my position would be at risk! Do you understand me?!”His voice echoed throughout the courtyard before the entire place fell into dead silence.“W-What? Operation what? Undercover along the border?”“So… So, Madam Gray didn’t die seven years ago. She was undercover? And she has medals?”At that moment, one of the bodyguards—who had hesitated to follow Jenny’s orders earlier—stepped forward.“I remember now! I heard about her when I was in the a

“Level the villa? Jessica, even if you’re trying to cause trouble for no reason, you can’t joke like that,” Jenny said with a mocking smile. “This is one of the best villas in the city. It’s worth over a hundred million, and it’s under the Gray family’s name. Which construction crew would dare take that job? They’d be throwing away their lives.”Martin’s mouth twitched with a trace of impatience. “Jessica, stop pulling these tricks to stall for time. And stop pretending as if the person on the phone was Director Lane. Do you think I’m stupid? If you don’t want to apologize, fine. From this day forth, you’re not stepping into the Gray family’s home again. As for the children, you won’t see them either…”Before he could finish, the roar of engines came from outside the courtyard.Everyone tensed and craned their necks to look. One after another, more than a dozen black cars with government plates drove in.Even Martin froze. An uneasy feeling rose in his chest, and he turned to his

The moment I spoke, the entire place went silent in shock.Martin stared at me as if I had lost my mind. He could not believe that I would take the initiative to ask for a divorce.“Jessica, are you crazy? In the state you’re in, you can’t even support yourself without the Gray family!”He sounded so certain that it almost amused me. I let out a short chuckle and calmly said, “Not only am I divorcing you, but I’m also taking custody of the children and ownership of this villa.”Even the bodyguards, who had been uncertain where they stood, began looking at me as though I were insane.“Wow, listen to her. Who does she think she is?”“She wants the house and the kids? She must still be dreaming.”“Exactly. This is the Gray family. Anyone who dares to fight Mr. Gray for something doesn’t know what they’re up against.”Martin looked at me like I had told the most absurd joke.“Jessica, even if you’re desperate for money, there should be a limit!“I know you used to be a government

The bodyguards exchanged glances and closed in as they prepared to rush me.At that critical moment, an enraged male voice came from outside the courtyard.“Stop!”Martin had returned. He strode in wearing a sharp suit and exuding authority. A team of people followed him, and the harsh woman who had insulted me over the phone was at the back. The instant Martin saw me, he froze and spoke in disbelief.“Jessica? You’re alive?!”“If I weren’t, how could I be here watching you let someone mistreat my children?” I let out a cold laugh. The courtyard erupted in shock.“What? Jessica? Isn’t that Mr. Gray’s late wife?”“She’s been dead for seven years!”“My God. She came back and saw her children being abused? Then, Miss Jenny must be…”“Does it matter if she’s back? She vanished for seven years. Who knows if she ran off with another man? Miss Jenny is the one Mr. Gray truly cherishes.”The two children beside me stood frozen.“M-Mom?” John’s voice trembled with disbelief.“You
