Chapter 7

Author: Anonymous
The familiar voice came from ahead, and I looked up to see Brandon approaching with a bouquet of flowers in his arms. We hadn't seen each other in years, but he limped toward me with determined steps.

"I can't believe it's really you…" Brandon murmured, his eyes suddenly welling up. "Today's the anniversary of Mom's death. I didn't expect you to come too…"

Nicholas had just stepped out of the car behind me, a little unsure as he asked, "Would it be alright if I visited her too?"

Mom had been kind to him when she was alive. Thinking about it, he hadn't actually done her any wrong.

So, I gave a slight nod. "Let's go together."

Nicholas and Brandon's eyes lit up, and they exchanged glances, both seeing the surprised joy in each other's eyes. When we reached Mom's memorial site, they got down on their knees in front of her grave.

They said solemnly, "We've hurt Adeline, and we know this won't erase our past actions. It took Madison leaving to finally see what we'd done wrong."

Outside the house, Madison's cries and shouts continued. Nicholas, feeling frustrated, started calling every number he could find for my college. Each call was answered quickly, but very few knew what program I had joined. Finally, a senior who shared my mentor, Kieran Brookes, picked up the phone. When he heard the reason behind the call, he simply said, "Oh, you mean Adeline Lewis? She really did join the program." A glimmer of hope flashed in Nicholas' eyes, and he couldn't help but ask, "Do you know where she went? We'd like to contact her." Kieran sighed deeply. "That's not possible as this is a classified government research program that can't be made public, and those who have joined have absolutely no contact with the outside world." He added, "Remember what happened to Adeline's mom? She was allowed to stay in touch with the outside world, and that's how those criminals found her. She died along with them. The government won't risk another incident like that ever again.

Nicholas rushed into the guest room, only to find it just as messy as the day I left—nothing had been touched.Brandon followed close behind and frowned at the cluttered space. "What the hell? She still hasn't come back after all this time?"Madison felt somewhat speechless and instinctively tried to mediate with fake concern. "Adeline has always been a little dramatic. She'll probably come back once she's cooled off."Nicholas suddenly snapped, "Can you just be quiet for a second?"Madison was stunned for a moment, then began crying pitifully. "What did I say wrong? Isn't that how she's always been?"Nicholas' expression instantly turned frighteningly cold, and the anger in his heart intensified. He wondered if I really had always been that way. Usually, this would be the part where he hugged Madison and comforted her, like always. In his mind, Madison had always been the fragile girl who lived in hardship after losing her family. When he first met her, she had stood timidly

Even Brandon turned to Nicholas, disbelief written all over his face. "You burned it just like that?"Nicholas frowned impatiently. "You said we could throw out whatever we wanted. You're her brother, weren't you the one who said it didn't matter?"It was strange. I should've been furious, screaming and lashing out at both of them. Yet, what I felt wasn't rage—it was emptiness.Something inside me had finally broken for good, and I didn't bother listening to them argue over who was more to blame. Instead, I grabbed my suitcase and began packing.Madison watched me with barely hidden anticipation in her eyes, though her voice came out soft and pleading. "Adeline, don't go."She stumbled away from Nicholas' arms, held onto my hand, and dropped to her knees. "It's all my fault. I never meant to come between anyone. If someone has to leave, it should be me." Her crying grew louder, like I was the villain forcing her to walk away.Just as expected, Nicholas and Brandon's guilt vanis

My legs finally gave out, so I hailed a cab home. However, when I tried to unlock the front door, I realized the passcode had been changed.I keyed in Nicholas' birthday—nothing. So, I tried Madison's, but it was still wrong.Frustrated and exhausted, I fought off my drowsiness and called Nicholas, who took a long time to answer. "What's the passcode for the front door?"Nicholas replied flatly, "You can't go in right now. Brandon and I prepared a surprise for Maddy—we've completely redecorated the entire house inside and out." I froze, my eyes widening in disbelief. I immediately thought about Mom's journal, worried if they had thrown it out during the cleanup. Panicked, I quickly said, "I couldn't care less about you redecorating the house, but can you at least let me in to pack my own things?" Nicholas couldn't help but question me. "Why do you need to pack anything? There's still a place for you in this house. Just wait at the door until we get back; we'll open it then."

Ten minutes later, I finally pulled myself together and went inside. The private dining room was warm and cozy. Madison Calder wore a pale blue mini dress, and my brother, Brandon Lewis, was peeling grapes for her.As soon as Madison saw me, her eyes lit up, and her smile was dazzling. "Adeline, you're finally here!" She immediately stood up, looked around, and feigned awkwardness. "Oh no, my friend had just arrived earlier, and there's no seat left for you. I'm so sorry."Brandon didn't even look up as he chimed in, "There's a folding stool by the door. Just sit there."I followed his gaze and finally noticed the tiny stool near my feet. If I remembered correctly, that was where the servers usually sat to wait for customers' instructions. "That doesn't seem right..." Madison appeared sympathetic, but a sly glint flashed in her eyes. It was obvious that she was doing this on purpose. When Nicholas saw I wasn't moving, he couldn't help but frown. "What, you have a seat and s
