Chapter 2

A few minutes later, Mike looked at his phone and felt a little uneasy. I had not called him back.

After all, in the past, unless I was busy with house chores, I was always waiting for him to call me at every single moment.

He had called me, yet I had not immediately called him back in my extremely grateful tone.

Just when he was about to check with his team on the fire Sally had mentioned, Mia quickly stopped him.

“Mike, I was the one who answered all the calls after you received that award. Lean never called once.”

Upon hearing that, Mike no longer frowned with worry.

“Her friends are as bad as her! They’re always lying to me and teaming up against me.”

After he said that, he angrily screenshotted his divorce request to his lawyer and prepared to send it to me.

However, when he scrolled through his text messaging app, he could not find his conversation with me.

It was no surprise. He rarely replied to my text messages. He did not even bother to save my contact.

Instead, he had pinned his chat with Mia.

He found it a little strange, but he did not think any further.

Mia immediately comforted him, “Mike, since you’re scaring her with a divorce, why don’t you try to threaten her about the division of your marital property?

“After all, she’s been living her best life as a housewife over the past five years. She won’t have the money to pay you back. By then, she’ll definitely show up!”

Mike agreed to that and immediately went through his bank statements.

Aside from the monthly living expenses that he sent me, which was one thousand dollars, he split all other costs evenly.

Our meals, travels, hotel stays, even condoms were split evenly.

I did not have a job, so he had paid all of those expenses. After adding all those expenses up, it was a huge sum.

He put in a request in the system and asked to divide the quantified value up without any hesitation.

Immediately, he received an automated message.

[As the system is in its trial phase, once you’ve put in the request, you won’t be able to cancel it.]

[The system will ensure absolute fairness. As long as the marriage is still legally bound, the settlement of assets will be carried through completely.]

[If one of the parties died, the other party would experience the painful memory of the death.]

Mike hesitated a little, but when he saw Mia’s pitiful expression, he immediately pressed ‘yes’.

Firstly, he firmly believed that I was not dead.

Secondly, even if he requested for a divorce, I would be in the palm of his hand if he asked me to go back to him.

He sent the system record to Sally smugly, and told Sally to inform me about it as a threat.

Then, he hugged Mia and sighed.

“Mia, if you had not secretly sponsored me throughout my university journey, I would not have made it today.

“As my wife, Leah is basically a bloodsucker. She takes all my money. She should feel honored that she’s able to repay you for your kindness by donating her skin.”

Mia blinked guiltily and hung her head to avoid eye contact.

“It’s nothing. You’re my hero, so I’m willing to do anything for you.”

When I looked at how close the two of them were, I felt a lump form in my throat.

I was the one who took care of this family, but he did not see my effort at all.

When we were dating, I had worked five odd jobs to save up for his tuition fees.

In order to protect his pride, I had anonymously wired them to him.

After we got married, I was worried about his high-risk job, so I was very frugal with the one-thousand-dollar allowance that he gave me.

I stinged on the water, electricity, and maintenance fees.

I was very frugal when it was festive seasons or birthdays.

I did not even go to the hospital when I had a fever, just so he could have a good meal after he completed his mission.

I took care of the family in such minute details, day after day.

Eventually, he started to forget that I had given up a government servant role to be a housewife.

In the end, Mia claimed credit for the anonymous sponsorship.

To Mike, I was nothing but a useless parasite as a housewife.

I teared up and looked at my ring finger. It had been badly burned.

The silver ring that I had worn for five years had melted in the huge fire.

As I died painfully, I had been most hurt by Mike’s actions and his so-called love.
