Chapter 4

Author: Origin Of Echoes
After they slept together, Mia fell asleep.

Mike suddenly thought of me.

He carefully picked up his phone and scrolled through his contact list.

When he saw my contact description as “loves Mike forever”, he let out a sigh of relief. Then, he sent me a text message.

[Stop with your tantrum. I won’t really ask you to pay me. Just come over and donate your skin to Mia.]

[She’s still a young woman. How is she going to marry someone with such a scar? Come over, quick. I’ll be waiting for you at the hospital.]

He kept checking his phone, but he did not receive any replies from me.

Then, he kissed Mia’s cheek out of frustration.

I grimaced. I felt relieved and sad at the same time.

Tragically, in the past, I would have answered him happily.

I would never have thought that he would text me right after cheating on me, which was why he sounded gentler than usual.

As for relief…

I touched my flat tummy and smiled helplessly.

Thankfully, my baby never had to suffer in such a family.

The next few days, Mike accompanied Mia in choosing her wedding gown and ring.

However, when he was trying to pay for the deposit, he realized his assets had been frozen.

“How is it possible? What did Leah do to my card?”

I felt helpless when I saw his angry expression.

What card?

After we got married, he had never told me any of the passwords to his phone, bank account, or even the supermarket member account.

Aside from the measly allowance he gave me, it was impossible for me to spend an additional cent. However, he was still blaming me.

“Mia, I have to find her. Wait for me at the hospital.”

“Alright, Mike. Quick, go back.”

He left in a hurry. Mia quickly got down from the bed and rummaged through her bag.

After he went home, Mike was stunned by the scene before him.

The small bedroom that was initially bright and cozy had been burnt to ashes.

I looked at the burnt unit and recalled how the fire engulfed my skin. I trembled and curled up in fear.

“What happened here?”

Mike finally looked terrified. At the same time, the city hall sent him a text message.

[The public ruling will start at four in the afternoon. Please arrive on time.]

A hint of hope lit up in his eyes. On the way to the city hall, he quickly called his firefighting team.

“Help me check, on the day of the award ceremony, did Leah make a fire report?”

The person on the other end of the line snorted.

“A fire report? Didn’t your precious Mia tell you?”

Mike’s eyes darkened as his expression was terrifying.

The deputy chief, Logan Smith, had answered his call. They never really saw eye-to-eye, but he was the one who was on duty when Mike called.

“Stop talking nonsense, just tell me!”

“Didn’t you request for a divorce? You should head there and see if you can see her there.”

The car drifted to the side of the road. Mike quickly steered it back.

“How… how did you know?”

“I’m not the only one who knows about it. Everyone knows.”

After he ended the call, Mike sped to the city hall. A crowd was gathered there.

I was floating midair when I saw the people pointing at my photo.

“This woman is so heartless. Chief Anderson’s putting his life on the line to earn money and take care of her, but she’s still asking for a divorce.

“That’s right, I want to see how much she has to pay instead.”

I fidgeted uneasily, but I saw Sally standing with her back straight in the crowd.

Mike had obviously seen her too. He wanted to call out to her, when one of the staff members asked him to go on stage for the asset division.

Very soon, there was a final figure of how much he had contributed to the family. It was two million dollars.

Everyone exclaimed.

“Not only is Chief Anderson a responsible fireman, but he’s also a good family man too.

“His wife is truly a parasite.”

When it was my turn to go up, Mike anxiously glanced around, but he did not see me.

Mia, who was supposedly at the hospital, appeared with a smug expression.

“I bet she knows she can’t afford it, so she doesn’t dare to appear.

“Unfortunately, this application can’t be cancelled. Once the amount is finalized, she’d have to pay and go through the divorce.”

I looked at Sally anxiously.

Mike had bought the house and the car. I did not have a job. How would I be a match to him?

Just when everyone thought that I did not dare to appear, Sally took a few heavy breaths, before she ran onto the stage with tears in her eyes.

There was a negative figure appearing on top of her head.

Everyone started laughing hysterically.

However, a few seconds later, Mike looked up in disbelief and almost lost his mind.

“Hello, I’m Mike. Is Leah’s mother still at the rehabilitation center?“Can you keep a close eye on her? I’ll come and pick her up in a bit.” The only solution Mike thought of was to take care of my mother. However, what the nurse said next killed all his hope. “I’ve told you before that she’s no longer with us.”“Where’s she?”“She died in a car accident right in front of the fire station. Chief Anderson, do you not know that?”The phone slipped from his hand. Mike stared blankly. He could not believe it was real. Sally could not stop herself from slapping him. “You’re a jerk, Mike!“Leah’s mother had the IQ of a seven-year-old. She didn’t know anything, yet she knew she had to save Leah!“She thought you would save Leah, so she was calling out your name before she breathed her last breath in a puddle of her own blood!”My heart sank. I desperately wanted to look for my mother. However, with Mike there, I could not go anywhere. The divorce was no longer as simple

Mike’s eyes widened his eyes in shock as he received the terrifying news. He did not believe his own ears. He refused to believe it. “Impossible! On the wedding day, I never received any calls at the fire station! Leah can’t be dead!” Logan laughed mockingly. He looked at his superior in disdain. “That’s right, you didn’t receive the call, but Mia did!“If she had told us earlier, just a little earlier…”As if Logan had recalled something terrible, he balled his fists up with an expression of anguish. I looked at them and hung my head. He was right. If they had been informed a little earlier, I could have been saved. However, those few minutes of purposeful delay led to my death due to asphyxiation. “She really wanted to live. She crawled to the exit with her bloodied limbs, but she still didn’t manage to escape…“No one would be able to have such strong perseverance, unless she’s a mother.” Sally cried and took out my pregnancy report from her bag. It indicated th

The crowd’s emotions were stirred too. They felt that the numbers displayed on the screen were fair. Sally sneered and continued, “Mike, Chief Anderson, I remember back when you first got married, you said that you’d love her forever.“It turned out your love amounted to a measly one thousand dollars a month. Your love only gave her suffering!“Look at you! Do you think this is reflective of what you’ve owed her?”Mike looked up in fear. As expected, there was a twenty-thousand dollars gap to reach two million dollars. He suddenly recalled something as his lips quivered. “Impossible… It’s impossible…”“5,786! Do you remember this figure?” Sally was in tears. Her eyes were filled with sympathy toward me. “Those were three years’ worth of school fees! She was the one who sponsored your school fees that amounted to 17,358 dollars!“In order to earn enough money, she lost fifteen pounds in six months!” As she said that, I was shown on the screen again. I was working ma

The audience started to grumble. “These are just a married woman’s responsibility. Why is he being charged?”“He’s working hard out there. Isn’t it the woman’s responsibility to do all the basic house chores?”The city hall’s staff member laughed and asked, “Do you need to pay for a nanny?”The crowd answered, “Yes.” “Do you need to pay a cleaner?”“Yes.” “Do you need to pay a caretaker?”“Of course!” “Since you say yes, it means these jobs have value. Then, why did you ignore the value of a housewife when they carried out all these tasks? Why did you turn a blind eye to women’s values?”The crowd became quiet. There were some faint sobs. No one knew who was crying. Maybe the sobs came from the women who had contributed in silence. I heard the cries and suddenly smiled. I had married Mike because of happiness in the first place. However, it turned out that he was the only happy one. Mia looked at the crowd that was no longer scolding me and stomped her foot in

“How is it possible?“How could I possibly owe Leah that much money? She’s just a housewife!“Where is she? Why are you representing her? This is totally unfair!” Mike stared at the figure on top of his head that quickly became a negative number. As for Sally, the number on her head grew a lot, and it became two million dollars. Everyone started rioting. They said that Sally was replacing me, so it was basically cheating. Mia even picked up a water bottle and threw it at Sally. “What a lousy system! It’s a scam! Tell Leah to show her face and pay up!” “That’s right! Pay up, pay up!” Everyone started to chant. The bottle flew toward Sally. I subconsciously tried to shield her, but the bottle went through my translucent body. Fortunately, Logan appeared on time. He blocked the bottle from hitting Sally. “Are you alright?”Sally nodded. They turned around and glared at Mia furiously. However, Mia still looked very smug. The workers at the city hall were trying t
