To Elena, it felt like hours.

She stood completely still, unable to see Adrian, Aria, or the Keeper. Her hands trembled as she reached forward.

“Adrian?”

No answer.

“Aria?”

Still nothing.

Panic tightened around her chest.

“Adrian!”

A hand suddenly grabbed hers.

“I’m here.”

She nearly collapsed with relief.

“You scared me.”

“I was right beside you.”

“I couldn't see you.”

“I know.”

His fingers tightened around hers.

“I'm not letting go.”

Elena stared at the little girl standing in front of her.Her face. Her eyes. Her smile.Everything about her looked painfully familiar. But it was the words that frightened Elena most.“Meet your sister.”Adrian slowly stepped forward.“My sister?”The little girl nodded.Elena couldn't move. The enormous shadow behind the child stretched across the broken ground. The Guardian immediately lowered its body, preparing to attack.“Stay back,” it warned. The little girl turned toward the Guardian.“You still remember me.”The Guardian froze. Its glowing eyes widened.“You…”The girl smiled.“You forgot my name.”The Guardian lowered its head.“No.”“You did.”Elena's heart pounded. She looked at the Guardian.“You know her?”The Guardian didn't answer.“Guardian?”Its enormous hands tightened against the ground.“She was not supposed to return.”The little girl laughed softly.“But I did.”Adrian moved closer to Elena.“What is happening?”“I don't know.”For the first time, Elena's voic

“LET HIM GO!”Elena's scream tore through the sky.She ran toward Adrian, but the golden light around him exploded outward. The force threw her backward. She hit the ground hard.“ELENA!”Adrian's voice sounded distant. She looked up.He was floating above the broken earth.Golden chains of light wrapped around his arms, chest, and legs. His face was twisted with pain. The ancient being stood beneath him.“My son,” he whispered.Adrian shook his head.“I am not your son.”The being smiled.“You still resist.”“I don't know you.”“You knew me before you had a name.”Adrian screamed as the golden chains tightened.Elena pushed herself to her feet.“Stop!”The being turned toward her.“You have no authority here.”Elena's silver energy erupted around her body.“I don't need authority.”She raised her hand.“I need him.”The golden light surrounding Adrian flickered. The being's smile disappeared.“You still believe love makes you powerful.”“It does.”“No.”He raised one hand.“You are p

The hand came out of the ground and grabbed Elena by the ankle. She screamed.Adrian reacted instantly.“ELENA!”He lunged toward her, but the darkness exploded between them.A wall of black energy shot upward, separating them.Elena fell hard onto the cracked ground. The hand tightened around her ankle. It was cold. Not the cold of ice.The cold of something that had never known life. She clawed at the ground, trying to pull herself free.“Let me go!”The darkness pulled harder.“Elena!”Adrian slammed both hands against the black barrier.Nothing happened. The copy of Adrian stood a few feet away, still bleeding from the silver spear wound. He stared at Elena with wide eyes.“That isn't supposed to be here.”Elena looked at him.“What isn't?”“The hand.”His voice trembled.“I've seen it before.”A second hand emerged from the ground. Then a third. The earth began to split apart. The Guardian roared.“MOVE!”Everyone scattered. The ground beneath Elena collapsed. She dropped into da

Something stepped out of the darkness wearing Adrian’s face. For one terrible second, Elena forgot how to breathe. The stranger had Adrian’s eyes, Adrian’s mouth, and the same small scar beneath his left eyebrow. Even the way he stood was familiar. But it was not Adrian.Elena knew that immediately. The real Adrian was still on his knees in front of her, one hand pressed against his chest as black cracks spread across his skin. The copy smiled.“Hello, Elena.”Adrian tried to stand. His knees gave way.“Don’t listen to him,” he warned. The copy tilted his head.“You always say that.”Elena moved between them.“Who are you?”The stranger looked down at his hands.“Perhaps the better question is, what am I?”“Answer me.”“I am what was removed from him.”Adrian’s face went pale.Elena looked at him.“What does that mean?”Adrian shook his head.“I don’t know.”The copy laughed softly.“You know more than you think.”Behind them, the First Source began to tremble. The man in the sky smiled. Not cruelly. Not kindly either. It was the smile of someone who had been waiting for a very long time.Elena stood frozen beneath him, Adrian beside her.The entire world had gone silent.Even the First Ones had stopped moving. The Guardian lowered its massive head as if recognizing something far older than itself.Lucian stared at the figure with disbelief.Eden took a step backward.“Who are you?” Elena asked. The man looked down at her.His eyes were not silver. They were not black. They were clear.Almost human.“I am the one who made the mother above the sky,” he said.Elena swallowed.“And who made you?”The man's smile disappeared. For the first time, something like sadness crossed his face.“No one.”The answer struck Elena harder than she expected.“No one?”“I was simply here.”The world trembled. The man slowly descended from the sky until his feet touched the broken ground. He looked ordinary now.An old man.Dark hair streaked with gray.
