Elena stared at the words on the wall.

SUBLEVEL 9 — ORIGINAL MEMORY CHAMBER.

For several seconds, nobody moved.

The underground corridor stretched ahead of them, dark and silent. Unlike the laboratory above, there were no alarms here. No flashing lights. No machines humming behind the walls.

It was almost peaceful.

That made Elena more nervous.

“Sublevel Nine,” Lucas whispered.

He looked as though he had just seen a ghost.

Elena turned toward him.

“You said this place didn't exist anymore.”

It showed the original Blackridge facility. There were nine levels.”“And?”“I asked her about it.”“What did she say?”Lucas looked at Elena.“She slapped me.”Elena bl

“Welcome home.”The little girl's voice echoed through the laboratory.Elena stopped breathing. She stared at the screen. The photograph was still there.A little girl with dark hair, frightened eyes, and the same small scar above her eyebrow. Her face. Her eyes. Her smile.Everything was Elena. But the file beneath it said:SUBJECT 0: ORIGINAL ELENA.Elena slowly shook her head.“No.”Lucas stepped closer.“Elena…”“No.”She backed away from the screen.“That isn't me.”The little girl's voice came again through the speakers.“Yes, it is.”Elena looked toward the ceiling.“Who are you?”A soft giggle answered.“You already know.”The laboratory lights flickered.Adrian grabbed Elena's hand.“Don't listen to it.”The voice laughed.“You always say that.”Elena froze.“Always?”The voice became quieter.“You said it the first time too.”Lucas looked at the source.“What is happening?”The source stared at the screen.“I don't know.”Lucas's expression hardened.“You're lying.”“No.”Th

Elena couldn't move. She stared at Adrian. His body was still, but his eyes were no longer completely his.Silver light shimmered beneath his irises, spreading slowly like cracks through glass.Lucas stepped forward."Elena, get away from him."She didn't."Adrian?"His head tilted slightly. For a moment, nothing happened. Then his expression softened."Elena."It was his voice again. His real voice. She immediately reached for his hand."I'm here."His fingers closed around hers."I can hear it.""What?""The voice."Elena swallowed."What is it saying?"Adrian's breathing became uneven."It says I belong to it."Lucas grabbed a metal rod from the floor."Then we separate you from it."Adrian suddenly screamed. The machines exploded into motion.Lights flashed across the laboratory.Elena tightened her grip on his hand."Adrian!"He fell to his knees.Lucas rushed toward him."Don't touch him!"The source stepped between them."Wait."Lucas glared at it."He's being taken over.""No.

The laboratory doors slammed shut.Elena flinched. For one terrible second, nobody moved.Smoke drifted through the room, curling around the broken machines. Sparks fell from the ceiling. The alarms had stopped, leaving behind a silence that felt more dangerous than the noise.Elena stared at her grandfather.Something was wrong with him.His body looked almost normal, but silver veins pulsed beneath his skin. His eyes glowed. And when he smiled, Elena no longer saw the grandfather she remembered. She saw something wearing his face."Grandfather."He tilted his head."Still calling me that?""You don't look well."He laughed."I've never felt better."Lucas stepped in front of Elena."Stay away from her."Their grandfather looked at him."Lucas."His voice became almost affectionate."My first success."Lucas's jaw tightened."I'm not yours.""No?"He looked toward Elena."Then ask her."Elena frowned."What does that mean?"Their grandfather pointed at Lucas."He was the first person

Elena woke to silence. Not the peaceful kind.It was the kind of silence that made her ears ring. She opened her eyes slowly. For a moment, she couldn't remember where she was. Then everything returned. The machine. The countdown.Lucas.Adrian.Her grandfather. Her grandmother's voice.Elena pushed herself upright."Adrian?"No answer. She looked around. She wasn't in the laboratory anymore. She was standing in a vast white room with no walls, no ceiling, and no floor that she could clearly see.Everything around her was white.Endless.Empty."Adrian!"Her voice echoed. Then she heard footsteps.Elena turned.Lucas appeared from the distance. He looked confused."Elena?"She ran toward him."Where's Adrian?""I don't know.""And the source?""Not here."Elena's heart tightened."What about our grandfather?"Lucas shook his head."I haven't seen him."Elena looked around."Then where are we?"Lucas stared into the distance."I don't know."That frightened her more than anything else.

Elena couldn't breathe. She stared at the man standing in the doorway.Every part of her recognized him.The shape of his face. The way he stood. The slight tilt of his head when he was confused.Even the small scar above his eyebrow. She had seen that scar countless times in childhood. She had touched it when they were younger and teased him about being reckless. She had cried over it when he first got it.And she had mourned him when she believed he was dead. Her brother.Lucas.Alive."Lucas?"Her voice broke on his name. The man smiled."Still the same voice."Elena took one step forward. Then another.Adrian immediately reached for her hand."Elena, wait."She barely heard him.Her eyes were fixed on Lucas."You're dead."Lucas's smile faded."I know.""I watched you die.""I know.""I buried you.""You buried someone."Elena stopped."What?"Lucas looked at their grandfather."Tell her."Their grandfather said nothing.Elena turned toward him."Tell me."He remained silent."Tel
