Chapter 3

Author: Nameless
Matthew's POV

Charles thought that Shannon hadn't heard him, so he repeated himself and held out the bouquet.

She took a step back and kept a polite smile on her face. "Thanks, Charles, but I can't accept the flowers. My boyfriend will be here to pick me up soon."

The bouquet slipped from Charles' hand and hit the ground. It was the first time he had ever heard Shannon admit that I was her boyfriend.

Helen couldn't help asking, "Shannon, I thought you said you didn't like Matthew. What's going on?"

Shannon simply shook her head and looked at Charles. "Sorry you came all this way, but Matthew will be here any minute. You should go. I don't want him to get the wrong idea."

Charles looked lost for a moment, then smiled. "Shannon, you probably don't know this yet, but Matthew isn't coming. He texted me to come pick you up."

Shannon froze. "That's impossible. He loves me more than anything. Why would he tell you to do that?"

Everyone in our circle knew how crazy I was about her and how possessive I could be. Shannon believed I'd never let another guy pick her up, especially someone I saw as a rival.

When Charles saw how convinced Shannon was, he scoffed and tried to pull up my message.

"Matthew's a playboy. Maybe he's already gotten tired of you and sent me here to pick you up in his place. Shannon, he's a jerk. I'm the one who truly loves you. Don't worry. I'll make something of myself and give you a good life."

"No, that's not possible! Gary just called and said he was on his way!"

Shannon's face went pale as she stared at the watch on her wrist. It was 10:30 am.

Just then, a red luxury car roared up and stopped in front of them.

Relief washed over Shannon's face when she saw Gary step out. Charles had been lying to her after all!

She quickly composed herself and ran over with a sweet smile. "Hi, Gary!"

Gary was usually warm and friendly, but this time he couldn't quite meet her eyes. He stammered, "Ms. Ruppert, get… get in the car. I'll drive you to school."

Instead of getting in, Shannon clutched her dress and stared at the rear passenger door.

If I'd been there, I probably would have known what she was waiting for.

In my previous life, I'd leapt out with a bouquet of jasmine before the car even stopped, just to see her sooner.

But this time, there was no movement in the back seat.

Shannon couldn't stop thinking about Charles' claim that I'd asked him to pick her up.

"Ms… Ms. Ruppert?" Gary said.

"Gary, is Matthew… is he in there?" Shannon asked.

Gary avoided her gaze as he explained, "Mr. Matthew… hasn't gotten up yet. Let me take you to school first."

Shannon smiled. "Then let's go get him. I'll go to school with him."

Cold sweat beaded on Gary's forehead. He couldn't understand why Shannon, who had always seemed indifferent toward me, suddenly cared so much.

Gary wiped away his sweat and said, "Ms. Ruppert… I should just take you to school first. Mr. Matthew already left on his own."

Shannon picked up the jasmine from the ground. "But you just said he wasn't in the car. Didn't he want to go to school with me?"

"Well…" With no way left to hide it, Gary finally told her the truth. "Mr. Matthew took the high-speed train to Belham…"

Before he could finish, Charles found my message. "Look, here's what he texted me!"

Shannon, who had kept herself together until then, snatched the phone from him. Her whole body trembled as she read the message. "He said I was yours? He loves me so much. How could he say something like that?"

Her voice cracked as she said, "Gary, tell me this isn't true!"

Gary said nothing. His silence was answer enough.

Her eyes were red. After standing there for two minutes, she finally said hoarsely, "Gary, can I borrow the car?"

Gary couldn't help saying, "At this point, Mr. Matthew's probably already on the train. It might be too late to catch him now."

But Shannon had already slid into the driver's seat, her voice trembling. "It's not too late. Even if he's on a plane, I'll catch up to him. He's never getting away from me!"

Fragments of a voice drifted through the darkness."Matthew! I want you to remember me forever! But in the end, it was all just a dream.""Matthew, goodbye. I hope you find a girl who loves you more.""Matthew, please… don't forget me."I jolted awake, the voice already fading from my memory. The other side of the bed was neat and untouched, and only one toothbrush had been unwrapped by the sink. Everything suggested that I'd been alone in the hotel room.I held my head and muttered, "Had I lost my mind? Why did I come to a hotel alone and drink this much? But I remember someone coming to the hotel with me."I racked my brain, but no matter how hard I tried, I couldn't remember a thing. When I asked the front desk, they told me I had checked in alone the night before.Back on campus, the day was full of youthful energy.During class, I glanced at the empty seat beside me and asked Keira, "Do you remember if someone used to sit next to me?"She laughed. "There used to be a chu

Matthew's POVAfter that, I never said anything like it again. I couldn't believe Shannon had actually cooked something for me now.I suddenly noticed that she looked a little pale. Before I knew it, she'd brought the spoon to my lips. I instinctively pulled away and shoved her hand aside. The lunchbox slipped from her hand. She stumbled back and fell, scraping her palm on a stone.I fought the urge to help her up. Without even looking at her, I said coldly, "I'm going to have lunch with Eric. Bye."The best way to make someone give up was to reject them outright. That was something she had taught me herself."Matthew, I know you've been reborn too. Can't we just talk things out?"I stopped in my tracks. I wasn't surprised that she knew I'd been reborn. I'd suspected as much when she shouted those words from the Cadillac."The past is in the past. There's nothing left for us to talk about."I paused briefly before adding, "And if you're here to apologize, don't bother. Leaving

Matthew's POVI was sure Shannon still couldn't let go of Charles. Even if we married again, what would be the point?I'd have to spend the rest of my life stuck in a loveless marriage. We'd end up resenting each other. And I'd live with the humiliation of knowing she still loved another man.I wasn't going to let the same thing happen a second time. And I certainly wasn't going to give the same woman another chance to hurt me."Shannon, please find a seat." Professor Nash broke the awkward silence.Unlike the other students, she knew that my dad had just donated ten million dollars to the school. She couldn't afford to embarrass either the donor's son or the girl my dad had personally recommended.I just hoped that Shannon wouldn't sit next to me or get in the way of my studies.Unfortunately, things didn't go as I'd hoped. The guy sitting to my left couldn't resist her charm. One soft "Hey, handsome", and he gladly gave up his seat.Shannon spent the entire class doing nothin

Matthew's POVMaybe she'd finally come to her senses and wanted to make it up to me after I'd saved her in our previous life. She'd always treated me coldly, but I never wanted her dead. All I wanted was to go our separate ways. At 130 miles per hour, the smallest mistake could kill her.I took out my phone to call her but hesitated. I didn't want anything more to do with her, and I couldn't risk distracting her while she was driving. In the end, I put my phone away. Police cars were already closing in, and the Cadillac, pushed far past its limits, was starting to smoke. It gradually slowed until it disappeared from sight. The passengers gradually returned to their seats, though they kept talking about it.I put on my headphones to block out the noise around me, pulled the window shades down, and closed my eyes.A Cadillac might be able to catch up to a high-speed train, but it could never win back a heart that had already moved on.Whether Shannon had truly changed her mind or

Matthew's POV"Shannon kept calling me as she drove. Her last message sat in the chat window, a red exclamation mark beside it, and it stung.I hadn't answered the first couple of calls. She told herself that I'd just missed them, not that I was ignoring her.But when the final call went straight to a message saying my phone was turned off, Shannon finally broke down in tears. She floored the gas pedal, speeding toward the train station as angry drivers honked and cursed around her. She had a bad feeling that if she couldn't see me, everything between us would be over. The drive normally took 30 minutes, but she made it there in just ten. However, she was too late. A staff member told her the train to Belham University had already left.Just then, my dad called her. Gary had already filled him in on everything."Shannon, I don't know what got into that idiot.
