Chapter 3

Author: Golden Cicada
We had been together for many years. Every time I suggested going to the movies like any normal couple, she would loop her arm through mine and coax me softly.

“Come on, I’m an actress now. If someone takes photos, my career will be in trouble. People might even dig into your private life. I just don’t want you to get hurt.”

But after she became an actress, she was always “paired” with one male actor, or photographed vacationing with another male singer.

All those sweet words she used on me in the past echoed in my ears. With how deeply I used to love her, the mockery only stung deeper.

Halfway through the movie, George leaned close to her ear.

“Debbie, reporters are everywhere outside the cinema. Should we leave early?”

“We’ll go first. You leave later.” She did not ask for my opinion. She took George and left ahead of me.

I stayed in my seat and quietly finished the movie.

I would not suffer any longer for a woman who did not love me, and I would not live in fear because of her.

I would give the time and love I had left to myself.

I went to the hospital after finishing the movie in a good mood.

The pain from stomach cancer kept me from sleeping, and I needed intravenously administered pain medication to calm it.

The sharp smell of disinfectant filled the air.

On the TV, the paparazzi was reporting that the Best Actress had gone on a movie date with a rising young star, and the two of them had kissed sweetly on the street…

I fell asleep before the news ended. I vaguely felt my phone buzzing over and over in my arms.

I did not go home until midnight.

From afar, a small figure stood at my door.

It was Debbie.

All those years together, she was always the one getting drunk outside, or filming late into the night, and I would stand at the bar entrance or at the set just like she was doing. I would wait for her until the middle of the night.

I always brought tea to sober her up, or food to help her body recover.

But she never appreciated those acts.

She said that I was using it as an excuse to stalk her and interfere in her life.

I never thought the day would come when she would be the one waiting for me.

She ran over and hugged me tightly the moment she saw me.

“The movie ended ages ago. Where did you go? Why didn’t you come back? Don’t you know I would be worried? Don’t read the news today. They twisted the story on purpose. It’s fake.”

It took me a moment to remember what news she was referring to.

“It’s fine. I’m used to news like this.”

Hearing the indifference in my voice, she seemed to think back on everything she had done to me. Guilt flickered across her face for the first time.

Then, she took out a small box.

Inside lay a large diamond ring.

I froze.

I had dreamed about that moment countless times.

I had imagined her putting on the ring I had long prepared while taking a sincere vow for our years together.

But I felt nothing when I stared at this ring.

I set it casually on the table.

Her expression darkened. She frowned as she followed me into the apartment.

“Charles, you’ve really changed. How could you…”

I already knew the ending of that sentence.

She had expected me to glow with happiness, hug her in excitement, and instantly erase every grievance.

I forced a faint smile. “It’s a beautiful ring.”

“Do you like it?” she asked with a hopeful look.

I did not drop the smile. “I think so.”

Once upon a time, even the cheap matching rings she bought on a whim had felt like treasure to me, and I wore them every day.

How could I possibly dislike a ring with a massive diamond?

She finally breathed in relief and smiled.

“No… no, this can’t be! How is this possible?” Dad’s eyes suddenly cleared. He muttered to himself, as if trying to convince reality. “If he didn’t want to take care of me, fine… Why make up such a terrible excuse?” Jimmy watched the shift in his expression and thought of everything that had happened before. He finally asked the one question that had burned in his mind. “Charles is your biological son. Why? Why did you treat him like this?“You treated your stepson so well… why couldn’t you give even a fraction of that love to your actual son?” Dad froze. He was clearly unprepared for this question. He murmured nonstop, “He’s my son… I raised him through hardship… now he has a younger brother. If he supports the family, they’ll remember him… I’m old now, and I don’t have much time left… if anything happens to him one day, the family can help him in return… “He’s dating a big star, she has money… The news says she makes two million a day. I only asked for thirty thousand. If

“Aren’t you that famous actress, Debbie? Do you remember the man who went to all those dinners, drank for you, handled negotiations for you, and threw up until he nearly passed out? Think about it. Why do you think someone that young could have ended up with stomach cancer? “Debbie, you truly are despicable. When you had nothing, he supported you and fought with you. For ten years, how many times did you string him along? “You embarrassed him in public. You hid behind business excuses while you flirted with other men. Did you ever think about how that felt?” Debbie stared ahead blankly, as if her soul had been torn out. She had always thought Charles was only throwing a temporary fit. She believed that he would forgive her again and look forward to marrying her.She had truly believed that. Like someone drowning, she grabbed Jimmy’s sleeve and pleaded, “I want to see him… Please tell me… Where is he?” Jimmy shook her hand off. “You are disgusting.” Then, he shut the door

She even announced our relationship publicly on X. She admitted everything she had done to me in the past in hopes that I would see it and forgive her. When Jimmy relayed it all to me, I did not react. I could not even find the interest to care. I only said quietly, “I don’t want to hear anything about her anymore. She has nothing to do with me anymore. I don’t want to see her again either...” Jimmy agreed immediately with relief washing over his face, “Alright. I’ll make sure she stays far away. I’ll never let her bother you again.”My condition worsened by the day. The pain kept me awake through the night. I received a call from an unfamiliar number one night. The moment I heard her voice, I knew it was Debbie. “Charles, I know you are listening. Have you caused enough drama? “It’s all my fault. I’ve been too selfish. I’ve always loved you. Can you forgive me? Can we start over? “We can go abroad. They have the most advanced treatments. You’ll get better…” “Debbie…

The plane landed in Brinland. I settled down in the small apartment my mother had left behind. The relentless pain made it impossible to sleep. In the middle of the night, I received my father’s call after giving myself another injection for the pain. He started shouting the second I answered, “You changed your number and didn’t tell your old man? Did I raise you for nothing? “Are you out of your damn mind? You spent all those years swallowing your pride for her. You were finally about to get married, and you bolted? “Do you even know how rich she is? Half of everything she owns would be yours. If you just married her, you could buy your brother a house…” I replied calmly, “Do you actually feel bad for me, or are you worried about Shawn’s down payment?” His voice tightened. “I care about the money. I can’t stand the idea of you throwing all this away.” I let out a bitter laugh. “Alright. If that’s all, I’m hanging up.” “You’re a fool who can’t see straight. I fed you, c

George wore a crisp white suit and held the diamond ring in his hand. The smile on his face froze. His expression stiffened as he asked awkwardly, “Debbie, are you not happy to see me?” Debbie did not even bother answering him. Her eyes scanned the crowd, clearly searching for me, but I was nowhere to be found. George lowered his voice to plead, “Debbie, this is livestreaming everywhere. Please don’t embarrass me like this.” Debbie deserved her title as Best Actress. She quickly gathered herself and snapped back into her graceful persona.Seeing the gentle softness return to her face, George brightened up and said cheerfully, “Charles finally realized that you don’t love him and that he’s standing between us. He told me to fight for my own happiness. “He could be pretty sensible sometimes…” The gentle mask on Debbie’s face cracked. She gritted her teeth. “What did you say to him? Everything between you and me is just a publicity strategy. You don’t seriously think I bought

“I’m glad that you like it. Charles, I promise that I’ll show up beautifully dressed at your 101st proposal. I’ll plan the venue and decorations myself. You only have to show up as the most handsome man. “I’ll handle everything. You’re not allowed to lose your temper with me anymore.” I looked at her earnest face. “I won’t be involved with you anymore.” She paused. She had finally heard the distance in my voice. She reached for my hand, but her phone rang urgently. She answered the call and glanced at me apologetically. “The director needs some reshoots. I have to go.” I knew it was a lie.I had clearly heard George’s voice on the phone. “I understand. Go ahead.” My calm reaction made her panic for a second. She bit her lip and murmured to herself.“For tomorrow night’s proposal, I’ll wear a wedding dress. We’ll hold a grand ceremony.“Our story will be the trendiest topic, ‘The seven-year love story of Debbie Ford and her agent.’ You should be excited.” Then,
