Chapter 2

Author: Lara Dimson
Two months ago, a group of she-wolves had cornered me behind the old training grounds.

They came out of nowhere, blocking my path before I could react. One of them shoved me to the ground, and the rest closed in around me.

"Look at her. She won’t even resist. Weakling!"

Raven crouched down and grabbed a fistful of my hair.

“At least your sister has an excuse. Hunters kept her in a silver cage for days and it left her with PTSD and epilepsy. What excuse do you have, weakling?”

She dragged something out from behind her back. A bucket. The smell hit me before the contents did.

Rotting meat. Spoiled milk. Garbage they had been saving for days.

She poured it over my head.

The filth ran down my face, my neck, soaking into my clothes. I sat there, covered in it, my wolf whimpering somewhere deep inside me.

"You smell like what you are now," Raven said, stepping back.“Garbage!”

The others laughed as they walked away.

I stayed on the ground long after they left, until I could no longer smell the garbage on myself.

Then I walked home, carrying the stench of rot with me.

The moment I stepped through the door, my mother's head snapped up.

The scent hit her before I could even speak.

"What is that smell?"

Her voice was sharp and accusing.

I opened my mouth to explain, but nothing came out. What was I supposed to say?

That I was attacked? That six wolves held me down and poured garbage over my head?

That I had learned long ago that telling them would only make things worse?

My mother's eyes swept over me..

"Did you do this on purpose?"

I blinked.

"Celine has been calm for two days. And you walk in here smelling like a dead animal's carcass. Do you want to trigger her?"

I wanted to defend myself but no matter what I said, they would still believe I was the one at fault.

If I told her I was attacked, she would ask why I had been alone. She would ask what I had done to provoke them.

And all of it would feed back into the same story — household disrupted, Celine distressed, peace shattered by my existence.

"Celine cannot handle any kind of trigger, or her life will be at risk!" The healer's words had become a curse cast over our entire family.

So I swallowed everything.

"Sorry. I fell near the hunting pits."

My mother frowned but did not press further. She was already turning back toward the stairs.

"Go wash immediately. Use the basin water. And do not come out until the smell is gone."

I went to the washroom at the end of the hall and locked the door.

The water was already cold. I scrubbed my skin until it turned raw, but the smell would not come off. It clung to my hair, my clothes, my fingernails.

I scrubbed until my hands trembled and my tears finally spilled over.

Then I sat on the floor, hugged my knees to my chest, and cried into my own arms so that no one could hear.

---

The darkness was closing in over my vision now.

I could still feel the silver burning through my veins from the statue lodged in my back.

I heard father on the phone."...yes, another episode. Send the healer. Now."

Footsteps hurried past me.

They were all heading toward the sofa, where Celine was still thrashing in Mother's arms.

"Iris, go get Celine's herbs!"

My mother's order came without her turning her head. I wanted to answer, but my lips would not move anymore.

"Still putting on an act — let's see how long you keep this up!" Father snapped irritably.

My last flicker of consciousness landed on the day I stood in the healer's doorway.

I had come to return my apprenticeship satchel. The leather bundle filled with the dried herbs I had spent seven years learning to identify.

"Why are you quitting?"

The healer stared at me, stunned.

"You have a gift, Iris. Your nose can distinguish a healing root from a poison in a single breath. In my twenty years of training students, I have never seen anyone as talented as you.”

"The scent of the herbs sets off Celine's episodes."

I kept my head lowered, not daring to meet her disappointed eyes.

"Her healer said she needs a scent-free environment."

Now those locked-away dreams were dying slowly, right alongside me.

The sound of heavy boots on stone grew closer. The healer's warriors burst through the door.

"Where is the patient?"

"Here! Hurry! My daughter can't take it anymore!"

Father's voice cracked with an urgency he had never once shown for me.

How I wished someone would just look down. Would notice there was another daughter on the floor, bleeding, waiting to be saved.

The healer's warriors walked straight to the sofa and carefully lifted Celine, wrapping her in a clean white cloth. Mother followed, giving orders as she went.

No one noticed me dying in the corner.

"A wolf with silver in her blood can’t wait..." That was the last thing I heard. Then the world sank into permanent darkness.

  • I Died While They Saved Her   Chapter 10

Once the truth came out, Celine unraveled completely. The camera footage had destroyed every carefully constructed lie she'd built over the years, and there was nothing left to hide behind. The pack had turned against her, the council had condemned her, and our parents looked at her like she was a stranger wearing their daughter's face. She couldn't hold up the mask of the fragile victim anymore."Why does everyone keep defending her!" Celine screamed at our parents one night when they came to visit her in the council's holding den. Her voice was raw and jagged, nothing like the soft trembling tone she used to use. "She's dead! I'm the one who's still here! I'm the one who's still your daughter!"She slammed her fists against the table between them."You should be protecting me! You should be on my side! Why are you acting like I'm the monster when she's the one who—""Who what?" Father's voice came out quiet and broken. He looked ten years older than he had a month ago, his face holl

  • I Died While They Saved Her   Chapter 9

Two months after my death, something unexpected shattered Celine's perfect story.Old Man River, who lived three houses down from us, was cleaning out his shed when he found a broken security camera he'd completely forgotten about. He'd installed it the year before after someone had stolen tools from his property, and he'd angled it toward the street to catch anyone approaching his land. What he didn't realize was that the camera's wide lens also captured a clear view through our front window into part of our living room. When the council enforcer reviewed the footage, everything changed. The recording showed the day I died with perfect, devastating clarity. After I'd knocked over the vase—the one Father said had triggered Celine's episode—Celine hadn't immediately fallen apart the way she'd described to everyone.Instead, she'd gone completely still for seconds, her eyes darting toward the corner where our family's old security camera used to be before Father removed it months ago. • I Died While They Saved Her   Chapter 8

The pack's online forum exploded with discussions about me over the next few days.Someone posted a long thread titled "THE TRUTH ABOUT THE ASHFORD SISTERS" that spread through every corner of our territory within hours. The comments underneath made my spirit feel like it was being shredded apart all over again."So THAT'S what was really happening in that house? The older sister was tormenting the one who survived a hunter attack?"Honestly? People like that older sister get what they deserve. Call it karma or justice, either way she's gone now.""I always thought Iris seemed too perfect. Turns out she was hiding something rotten underneath.""That poor younger sister suffered in silence for YEARS because she was too terrified to speak up. How is that not evil?""The sick thing is I actually felt bad for Iris when I heard she died. Now I'm just glad she can't hurt anyone else."Celine sat curled up in the window seat of her room with her laptop balanced on her knees, scrolling through

  • I Died While They Saved Her   Chapter 7

Over the following days, Celine's accusations spread through the pack like poison in a water source. She told our grandmother through trembling sobs that I used to wake her in the middle of the night and press my claws against her throat, whispering that one day I'd finish what the hunters started. She cried to the head trainer at the academy, claiming I'd threatened to push her off the cliffs during a group run if she ever told anyone how cruel I really was.She even wept in front of the neighboring families, saying I'd told her over and over that she was a waste of space, that once Mom and Dad got too old to care for her, I'd make sure she ended up in a facility far away from the pack.Every lie came with specific details that made it sound real. Every tear looked genuine enough to break hearts. And I could only drift there, invisible and powerless, watching my name get torn apart piece by piece.I followed my parents home one evening and found Mother sitting on the couch with my jou

  • I Died While They Saved Her   Chapter 6

In the corridor outside the healer's den, Celine sat in a wooden wheelchair with a thick blanket draped over her lap. Her face was still pale, but her eyes had a strange sharpness to them that hadn't been there before. An apprentice healer wheeled her into a small private room where the council enforcer was waiting. He studied the fragile-looking girl with a careful expression, his arms crossed over his chest."Celine Ashford, what you just told the healer's assistant—can you repeat it?"Celine kept her head down, her fingers absently tracing the edge of the charm bracelet on her wrist. The one that used to belong to our grandmother before Mother gave it to her."I don't know where to start." Her voice came out soft and trembling, like she was barely holding herself together."You said your sister threatened you. Is that correct?""Yes." Celine looked up, and for just a moment something cold and calculating flickered behind her eyes. "She always hated that I was sick. She hated that Mo

  • I Died While They Saved Her   Chapter 5

In the holding room at the pack's council hall, Father sat motionless in his chair."Based on our investigation and the healer's report, your daughter died from silver poisoning combined with internal bleeding." The council enforcer slid a thin stack of photographs across the table. "The blood pattern on the floor and the hair we found on the statue both match your daughter's."He paused and looked directly at Father."What happened before she fell?"Father's voice came out rough and cracked. "I pushed her. Celine was screaming, and I—I panicked. I didn't realize she'd hit the statue.""Do you often handle your daughter that way?""No!" Father's head jerked up. "I mean... I don't think I... Celine's condition is delicate. Ever since the hunters took her when she was six, we've had to be so careful. Any stress, any loud noise, anything could trigger her seizures."The enforcer's expression didn't change. "Tell me about the incident with the hunters."Father's hands clenched on the table
