Chapter 1

I lay on the cold floor, and every breath came shorter than the one before.

The edge of the silver statue had pierced through my back, tearing into my lung before reaching my heart, and I could feel the silver burning deeper with every heartbeat.

Blood kept sliding down my side, gathering slowly beneath me on the tile.

A few steps away, Celine was curled into Mother’s arms on the sofa. Her hands were pressed tightly over her ears, and her whole body kept shaking violently.

“She did it on purpose!” Celine suddenly cried. “She knows I cannot handle that sound! She wants me to have another seizure!”

The moment those words fell, Father’s face darkened.

“Iris, are you satisfied now? Your sister has barely been stable these past few days, yet you still found a way to set her off!”

“I did not do it on purpose.”

My voice was so weak that even I could barely hear it.

The silver statue shifted deeper into my back when I tried to move. A sharp pain spread through my chest, and I fell against the floor again.

Celine suddenly screamed and burst into louder cries.

“Get her out of here! Make her go away! Go away! I do not want to smell blood!”

Mother immediately pulled a blanket over Celine’s shoulders, then turned toward me with obvious impatience.

“Iris, can you not be sensible for once? Your sister is already in this state, yet you are still lying there making everyone look at you!”

I stared at her for a moment. The blood below me was getting larger, and my fingers had already gone cold. A wave of dizziness hit me, making the room spin for a moment.

“Mom…Dad… the silver is too close to my heart.”

Hearing this, Father frowned.

“Stop saying things like that. Celine is already terrified enough. Do you want her to think someone is dying in this house?”

Perhaps my words really had frightened her, because Celine suddenly cried louder.

She grabbed the cushion beside her and threw it toward the wall.

The cushion struck the family frame above the fireplace. The glass shattered, and the frame crashed to the floor.

“I told you she wants to scare me!” Celine buried her face against Mother’s chest. “She always does this! Every time I am finally calm, she finds a way to make everything worse!”

She was still shaking from the seizure, her cries coming between each uneven breath.

Mother lowered her head and stroked her hair, her voice becoming gentle in an instant.

“It is alright. Do not listen to her. The bad sister is gone now.”

Watching this, I suddenly remembered the night my wolf first woke.

I had run all the way home and burst through the door before I could even catch my breath.

“Mom! She’s here! My wolf, I felt her, she—”

Before I could finish, Mom’s eyes had already gone to the staircase, where Celine’s light was still on.

She crossed the kitchen and caught my shoulders.

“Quiet. Do you want your sister to hear you? She has not shifted yet, Iris. If she finds out your wolf came first, you know exactly what it will do to her. Do you want us pulling her out of a breakdown all night?”

“But Mom, I thought you would be—”

“You are the strong one.”

She stroked my hair, guilt sitting soft in her eyes.

“You have always been the strong one. This family needs you to be patient. Can you keep this to yourself? Just until your sister catches up?”

I nodded.

That night, I lay awake until morning with my wolf pacing inside me like something caged, and I did not make a sound.

To this day, no one in this house had ever asked my wolf’s name.

My breathing had gone quick and shallow, and the burning was closing around the center of my chest.

The silver poison was spreading deeper. My wolf fought against it, trying to heal the damage, but every attempt was met by another wave of burning pain.

“Mom,” I managed. “Please... it’s silver. My chest hurts.”

I tried to reach toward her, but my fingers only dragged a few inches across the floor.

Mom finally turned, a frown pulling at her face.

“Iris, stop performing. Can’t you see the state your sister is in? You have always wanted everyone’s attention. You have done it for as long as I can remember. Whatever game this is, it can wait.”

The moment her words fell, Celine’s screaming became louder.

“Get her out! Get her out of here!”

“My sweetheart, Daddy’s here. It’s okay.”

Father’s voice was impossibly gentle.

“Daddy’s already chased the bad sister away. No one’s going to hurt you!”

I wanted to tell him that I was the one being hurt.

The silver had already reached my heart.

My vision blurred as another wave of dizziness swept over me. My wolf was still fighting, but the silver was winning.

My fingers dragged weakly across the floor, leaving a thin streak of red behind them.

Once the truth came out, Celine unraveled completely. The camera footage had destroyed every carefully constructed lie she'd built over the years, and there was nothing left to hide behind. The pack had turned against her, the council had condemned her, and our parents looked at her like she was a stranger wearing their daughter's face. She couldn't hold up the mask of the fragile victim anymore."Why does everyone keep defending her!" Celine screamed at our parents one night when they came to visit her in the council's holding den. Her voice was raw and jagged, nothing like the soft trembling tone she used to use. "She's dead! I'm the one who's still here! I'm the one who's still your daughter!"She slammed her fists against the table between them."You should be protecting me! You should be on my side! Why are you acting like I'm the monster when she's the one who—""Who what?" Father's voice came out quiet and broken. He looked ten years older than he had a month ago, his face holl

  • I Died While They Saved Her   Chapter 9

Two months after my death, something unexpected shattered Celine's perfect story.Old Man River, who lived three houses down from us, was cleaning out his shed when he found a broken security camera he'd completely forgotten about. He'd installed it the year before after someone had stolen tools from his property, and he'd angled it toward the street to catch anyone approaching his land. What he didn't realize was that the camera's wide lens also captured a clear view through our front window into part of our living room. When the council enforcer reviewed the footage, everything changed. The recording showed the day I died with perfect, devastating clarity. After I'd knocked over the vase—the one Father said had triggered Celine's episode—Celine hadn't immediately fallen apart the way she'd described to everyone.Instead, she'd gone completely still for seconds, her eyes darting toward the corner where our family's old security camera used to be before Father removed it months ago. Sh

The pack's online forum exploded with discussions about me over the next few days.Someone posted a long thread titled "THE TRUTH ABOUT THE ASHFORD SISTERS" that spread through every corner of our territory within hours. The comments underneath made my spirit feel like it was being shredded apart all over again."So THAT'S what was really happening in that house? The older sister was tormenting the one who survived a hunter attack?"Honestly? People like that older sister get what they deserve. Call it karma or justice, either way she's gone now.""I always thought Iris seemed too perfect. Turns out she was hiding something rotten underneath.""That poor younger sister suffered in silence for YEARS because she was too terrified to speak up. How is that not evil?""The sick thing is I actually felt bad for Iris when I heard she died. Now I'm just glad she can't hurt anyone else."Celine sat curled up in the window seat of her room with her laptop balanced on her knees, scrolling through

  • I Died While They Saved Her   Chapter 7

Over the following days, Celine's accusations spread through the pack like poison in a water source. She told our grandmother through trembling sobs that I used to wake her in the middle of the night and press my claws against her throat, whispering that one day I'd finish what the hunters started. She cried to the head trainer at the academy, claiming I'd threatened to push her off the cliffs during a group run if she ever told anyone how cruel I really was.She even wept in front of the neighboring families, saying I'd told her over and over that she was a waste of space, that once Mom and Dad got too old to care for her, I'd make sure she ended up in a facility far away from the pack.Every lie came with specific details that made it sound real. Every tear looked genuine enough to break hearts. And I could only drift there, invisible and powerless, watching my name get torn apart piece by piece.I followed my parents home one evening and found Mother sitting on the couch with my jou

  • I Died While They Saved Her   Chapter 6

In the corridor outside the healer's den, Celine sat in a wooden wheelchair with a thick blanket draped over her lap. Her face was still pale, but her eyes had a strange sharpness to them that hadn't been there before. An apprentice healer wheeled her into a small private room where the council enforcer was waiting. He studied the fragile-looking girl with a careful expression, his arms crossed over his chest."Celine Ashford, what you just told the healer's assistant—can you repeat it?"Celine kept her head down, her fingers absently tracing the edge of the charm bracelet on her wrist. The one that used to belong to our grandmother before Mother gave it to her."I don't know where to start." Her voice came out soft and trembling, like she was barely holding herself together."You said your sister threatened you. Is that correct?""Yes." Celine looked up, and for just a moment something cold and calculating flickered behind her eyes. "She always hated that I was sick. She hated that Mo

  • I Died While They Saved Her   Chapter 5

In the holding room at the pack's council hall, Father sat motionless in his chair."Based on our investigation and the healer's report, your daughter died from silver poisoning combined with internal bleeding." The council enforcer slid a thin stack of photographs across the table. "The blood pattern on the floor and the hair we found on the statue both match your daughter's."He paused and looked directly at Father."What happened before she fell?"Father's voice came out rough and cracked. "I pushed her. Celine was screaming, and I—I panicked. I didn't realize she'd hit the statue.""Do you often handle your daughter that way?""No!" Father's head jerked up. "I mean... I don't think I... Celine's condition is delicate. Ever since the hunters took her when she was six, we've had to be so careful. Any stress, any loud noise, anything could trigger her seizures."The enforcer's expression didn't change. "Tell me about the incident with the hunters."Father's hands clenched on the table
