Chapter 2

Autor: Tcee Eke
Evelyn’s POV

The ballroom fell silent.

Ethan stared at me from where he was kneeling on the floor. The smile had disappeared from his face.

Beside me, Amelia looked equally shocked, even her parents had gone pale and for a few seconds, nobody moved, nobody spoke.

The entire room seemed frozen, then I laughed, the sound echoing through the ballroom.

Confusion flashed across Ethan’s face and I covered my mouth and shook my head.

“Oh my God.”

A few nervous laughs came from the crowd.

“Evelyn?” Ethan asked carefully.

I stepped forward and wrapped my arms around his neck, the tension in the room instantly eased.

“You should see your faces.”

The crowd erupted as laughter filled the ballroom. Several guests shook their heads.

One woman placed a hand over her chest, “You nearly gave us a heart attack.”

Amelia laughed nervously while Ethan slowly stood. His expression was still confused.

I looked up at him and forced the brightest smile I could manage.

“Of course I’ll marry you,” I said through clenched teeth.

The ballroom exploded into applause as cheers echoed from every direction.

Someone started chanting congratulations and others immediately joined in.

Amelia rushed forward and threw her arms around me.

“That wasn’t funny,” she said.

I nearly flinched as the memory of her standing over my dying body flashed through my mind.

Instead, I hugged her back.

“Sorry,” I forced a smile.

“You scared us,” Ethan said as he slid the ring onto my finger.

The crowd applauded again.

I stared at the diamond sparkling beneath the lights. It was the same ring, the same proposal, and the same trap except this time I knew exactly what waited for me at the end and I wouldn't be their victim again.

The rest of the celebration passed in a blur.

Everyone wanted photos. Everyone wanted to congratulate us. Everyone wanted to talk about the wedding.

I smiled. I laughed. I acted exactly like the Evelyn they remembered. The sweet Evelyn. The trusting Evelyn. The foolish Evelyn.

Meanwhile, I watched every glance, every smile, every interaction. I paid attention to everything, especially Ethan and Amelia.

Several times throughout the night, I caught them exchanging small looks I never noticed in my previous life now they stood out like flashing warning signs.

Near midnight, I was mentally exhausted. Pretending to love the people who murdered me required more energy than I expected.

The party continued long after my engagement was announced, but I left early, claiming I had a headache.

Nobody questioned it, they were too busy celebrating that their trap was working.

By the time I arrived home, the mansion was empty, exactly what I wanted so I spent the next hour installing tiny cameras in places nobody would think to check.

The living room, the upstairs hallway, the garden, the guest wing, and most importantly, the sitting room Ethan and Amelia often used.

In my previous life, I trusted them completely. This time, I trusted nobody.

After finishing, I returned to my bedroom and opened the monitoring app on my laptop then I waited until hours passed.

Just as I began wondering if I had wasted my time, movement appeared on one of the screens.

It was Amelia. She looked around carefully before slipping into the sitting room and a few seconds later, Ethan appeared.

I watched him lock the door behind him then he pulled Amelia into his arms. Amelia smiled and wrapped her arms around his neck.

My stomach twisted with disgust as I stared at them.

“We’re finally engaged,” Amelia said.

Ethan laughed, “Not us, not yet.”

Amelia laughed, “I know.”

Then they kissed. The same man who had placed a ring on my finger hours ago was kissing my best friend behind my back just like he had in my previous life.

Amelia pulled away first.

“Just one more month and it's all over,” she grinned.

My fingers tightened around the edge of my desk. One month, the exact amount of time before my wedding and my murder.

Ethan smirked, “Then everything will belong to us.”

My blood ran cold. Hearing them say it out loud made it much more realistic.

Amelia rested her head against his chest and smiled, “Relax. Everything is going perfectly.”

“Of course it is,” Ethan replied casually. “If your father managed to pull it off, so can we.”

The smile instantly disappeared from Amelia’s face.

“Ethan.”

He frowned, “What?”

“Stop talking about it.”

“Nobody can hear us.”

“I don’t care,” Amelia snapped. “I shouldn’t have told you in the first place.”

For the first time since I started watching the footage, I forgot about the affair, the engagement, and the money.

My entire focus narrowed to those few words. If your father managed to pull it off… Pull what off?

What secret was Amelia so desperate to keep hidden and why did the mention of her father terrify her?

A strange feeling settled in my stomach.

The same feeling that told me something wasn’t right. Something much bigger was hiding beneath the surface.

I quickly saved the recording and backed it up to three different locations.

This was only the beginning.

I replayed the footage again. Ethan, Amelia, and her father. Somehow, all of them were connected.

The question was how and I intended to find out.

Twenty-five years, that was the rest of his youth and his future. Exactly as he had planned to do to me.“Thank you.”Mrs. Lewis nodded.“There’s one more thing. The

The moment he entered the room, he slammed the door shut behind him.Robert didn’t even sit down before speaking.“What the hell happened to the accounts?” he snapped. Nobody answered, and his gaze immediately landed on Ethan.“You said everything was under control,” he shot at him. The room seemed to tilt beneath me.“What?” The word came out as a whisper.Detective Harris sighed, “I was afraid you didn’t know.”My heart pounded violently, “Tell me everything.”The detective was silent for a moment before speaking.“Not over the phone.”My stomach twisted with anxiety, “Then where?”“I’ll text you an address.”I immediately shook my head, “No.”The detective paused, “No? You don't want us to meet?”“You said my life is in danger. The people responsible know you’re investigating them. If they’re watching you, they could be watching wherever we meet,” I explained. He chuckled softly, “You’re smarter than I expected.”“I’ll send a location. You choose somewhere else if you don't like it,” I said. “Fair enough,” he agreed, and the call ended. A few minutes later, I sent him an address. It was one of my father’s old properties that sat on the outskirts of
