Chapter 4

Auteur: Riverflow
Elise blinked, forcing away the sting in her eyes. Just then, her phone buzzed. She'd received a new email. Her eyes widened when she opened it.

There were dozens of photos attached, each one showing Victor by Quinn's side. One showed him going to the obstetrician when she first started showing. Some showed him walking through a park with her as her belly grew. One even showed him waiting outside the delivery room while she went through labor.

Every image had a date. They were all from the year Quinn had given birth.

That year, Victor had constantly "traveled for work". So, he hadn't just gone to be with her for the delivery. He'd been with her through her entire pregnancy!

And right now, he lay beside Elise, his arm thrown possessively over her. The pain hit her a little late, but it was sharp, like a knife to the heart. The tears she'd fought so hard to hold back spilled over.

They'd been together for eight years. Had Victor ever truly loved her?

Elise jolted upright and slapped Victor hard across the face. He snapped out of sleep with the sting, ready to explode. Then, he saw her tears.

"Elle." His chest tightened. He got up and gripped her shoulders. "What's wrong? Did you have a nightmare?"

"Victor, let's go file our divorce." She dropped her gaze and angled her body away, dodging his touch.

Victor's voice softened even more. "Elle, just what on earth is going on? Why do you suddenly want a divorce? Haven't we been doing fine all this time? Can you please stop this?"

Elise's tears had stopped. At his words, she asked, "Do you think I'm just throwing a tantrum?"

He said nothing. The silence said enough.

A hollow kind of helplessness washed over her, making her feel like she'd punched the air. Victor thought she was just jealous. He thought things would go back to normal once he placated her a little, after which he could continue bouncing between her and Quinn again.

Elise unlocked her phone and tossed it in front of him. "You kept traveling for 'work' that year. You said it was because you needed to meet partners and negotiate deals when the company's stock was unstable after Vaughn's death.

"But in reality, you were with Quinn for her entire pregnancy. What is she to you? Doesn't she have parents? Doesn't she have in-laws? Why did she need you, her husband's brother, to be there for her delivery? Answer me."

Elise thought she would break down, spiral, and scream, but the words came out calmly without so much as a tremor in her voice.

Her gaze was mocking. "Or did your family decide to let you step in to continue the line after Vaughn's death?"

"Elise Livingston!" Victor barked her name, his expression going dark. She was never supposed to find out about this. He would look into the matter carefully.

He sighed. "Vaughn died so suddenly that my parents couldn't handle it—they were crushed. They weren't in any state to care for her. As for her parents…"

He paused, his tone turning complicated. "You dislike her and don't want her near your parents, so she didn't dare tell them about it. Look, enough of this, okay? I only looked after Quinn and Daniel for Vaughn's sake. Don't overthink it."

The annex was actually a small cottage tucked deep inside the Livingston residence's garden, used for storing odds and ends. But starting from when Elise was ten, it had become a place for punishment. It was mostly for locking her up, of course. When Elise was ten, Michael and Sheila had brought Quinn, who was two years older, home.Sheila had told Elise, "Elle, you've always wanted a sister, right? From now on, let Quinn be your big sister, okay?"Elise had been thrilled and had nodded vigorously. "Okay!"She'd given Quinn all her favorite toys and played with her. She'd always envied people with a sister, and now, she finally had one, too.But the fun only lasted a short while. A few days later, while Quinn was playing on the swing, Elise had gone over to join over. However, Quinn had suddenly fallen off.Michael happened to be passing by at the time, and Quinn said while sobbing, "Elise didn't do it on purpose. I'm okay…"Michael had yelled at Elise.Elise had felt wronged.

Both Michael and Sheila froze when they heard that. Michael fixed a hard stare on Victor, his face turning steely. "What's that supposed to mean?"Victor kept his eyes on Elise's cheek, where a stark handprint had bloomed on her flawless skin. A storm churned in his gaze, and his voice turned hard. "My grandmother needs rest."He turned to give Michael and Sheila an unreadable look. "You should head home."Victor was kicking them out. They'd rushed over the moment they'd heard Marie was hospitalized, and now, they were being shown the door!Michael's expression turned even uglier. He flung his hand in a dismissive arc, snorted, and stalked off.Sheila stepped forward, eyeing Elise with a tender gaze. "Elle, get some ice for your face. Your father was just too angry. Once he cools off, he'll regret hitting you."Elise's eyes were lowered. Her lashes fluttered. No one saw it coming when she suddenly lunged at Quinn and slapped her hard across the face.Quinn yelped, clutching her

"Elise! What are you doing?" Quinn gasped and hurriedly pulled tissues from her bag to dab the water off Victor's face.He brushed her hand away, his gaze dark as he looked at Elise. "Grandma can't be left alone. I'll have someone drive you home."Elise gripped the water bottle tightly. "You can hire a caregiver or have Glen stay. Either way, you're coming with me today to finalize the divorce.""You unruly imbecile!" Michael's furious shout cut through the corridor. His expression was ugly as he and Sheila strode over. "Did my warning go in one ear and out the other, Elise?"Sheila grabbed Elise's hand. "Elle, Mrs. Gardner Senior just woke up. Don't say things that will upset her right now."Michael glared at Elise, ready to reprimand her. Meanwhile, Sheila coaxed her, wanting her to hold it in.Elise turned to look at them. "Do you know what Victor did?"Victor's breathing hitched. He grabbed her hand. "Elle, I'll drive you home."A minute ago, he wanted to instruct someone t

Victor's brows drew together. "It's a call from home."He picked up the phone. "Hello?"Glen's anxious voice rang out on the other end of the line. "Mr. Victor, please get to the hospital. Mrs. Gardner Senior just fainted!"Victor's expression tightened at once. "Alright. I'm on my way."Elise gritted her teeth. "You liar!""Grandma is in the hospital," he said, looking straight at her, his tone grave. "We have to head over there."She turned away. "I'm not going. What does that have to do with me?""Elle." Victor's tone grew severe. "We're not divorced yet. She's still your elder."The atmosphere in the car turned cold and heavy, but Elise stayed silent. Victor fired up the engine and sped toward the hospital. The sharp scent of disinfectant hung in the corridor. Glen stood outside the emergency room."Mr. Victor, thank goodness you're here! I was terrified," he said, trembling as he spoke. "Mrs. Gardner Senior collapsed while walking in the garden after a meal. I've called

Elise frowned. Could it really be this coincidental? Bill just had to be out of town while Victor was injured? She looked at Victor, whose face was pale as he leaned against the doorframe. She said, "You should consider replacing your family doctor."As a family doctor, Bill was the Gardners' on-call physician. He had to be available 24/7 because his main job was ensuring the Gardners' health and safety."Okay," Victor answered. Then, he coughed weakly, his face growing even paler.Elise was genuinely afraid he might die. If that happened, they wouldn't be able to finalize their divorce. She stood and walked toward him, her delicate features iced over. His tall frame swayed before he slowly followed her. Growing impatient, she stepped back, took his arm, and draped it over her shoulder, guiding him toward the bed.He turned to look at her. Her face was taut, her eyes lowered, and her lashes fluttered now and then."Elle, you still care about me, don't you?" He suddenly spoke. Hi

"I'm out of money." Elise's tone was calm as she idly toyed with the massive diamond ring on her finger. It was set in layered rose-petal prongs and was a beautiful, intricate piece. She'd loved it the moment she'd laid eyes on it. Later, Victor had used it to propose to her. She'd been thrilled by how much thought he'd put into it and sobbed with happiness. The ring had been a witness to her love. But now, that love was gone, the marriage had turned ugly, and life kept getting worse. After thinking it over, she felt the only way forward was to cut ties with the past. So, she had to sever anything tied to their history.Cecilia paused, seemingly thinking of what to say. After a moment, she bit out, "That bastard. Did he really freeze your cards? He never used to be like this!"Elise smiled in self-deprecation. "Yeah. How did it come to this?"Cecilia's heart ached for her. "I'll give you money, okay? I can transfer it now. I know you love that ring, so keep it.""I don't want it
