Chapter 2

Author: Wandering Heart
Around noon the next day, the digital home lock beeped. Julian walked in carrying an elegantly packaged takeout box.

Rebecca followed behind him, wearing an oversized men's dress shirt. The hem barely covered the top of her thighs, and the collar hung open, exposing her collarbone and a delicate necklace I'd never seen before. She wasn't even wearing pants.

Julian stopped in front of me. His gaze landed on the bandages wrapped around my arm, and he frowned slightly. "Are you still mad? Rebecca went all the way across town and waited in line for two hours to buy your favorite crab quiches. She wants to make it up to you.

"She really didn't mean it yesterday. She's just immature and thought it was funny. After she realized how badly you were hurt, she felt so guilty that she barely slept all night."

Behind him, Rebecca lowered her head and fiddled with her fingers. Her expression was full of remorse and unease as she said, "Audrey, I'm sorry. I really was just curious. I didn't know you'd burn that badly…"

"Just leave it on the table," I said calmly, pulling my hand back.

Julian let out a sigh of relief and then headed toward the kitchen to grab plates and forks.

Rebecca didn't follow him. Instead, she walked over to the water dispenser and pressed the red button for boiling water.

Scalding water filled a glass, with steam curling upward.

Holding the glass, she approached me with a sweet, innocent smile. "Audrey, have some hot water to warm your stomach."

As I reached out to take it, her fingers deliberately loosened around the glass. The boiling water tipped forward and poured right on my hand.

She stared at me intently, excitement gleaming in her eyes. She wanted to see whether someone who couldn't feel pain would still flinch or recoil at heat.

I didn't move. I steadily caught the bottom of the tilting glass.

Boiling water flowed over the back of my hand. My skin instantly turned an angry red.

Expressionless, I looked at her. Then, I flicked my wrist.

The remaining half glass of hot water splashed onto the carpet by our feet. A few drops of water landed on Rebecca's foot.

"Ah!" Her scream pierced the living room as she jumped backward. Tears instantly filled her eyes. She shrieked, "It's so hot! Julian, I got burned!"

The dishes in Julian's hands crashed to the floor. He rushed over and pulled Rebecca into his arms. Lifting her foot, he inspected it carefully.

There were only two tiny red spots, not even a blister.

After confirming she was fine, he stood and turned toward me. His brows were knitted together tightly, and his voice simmered with anger.

"Audrey, I know you're upset about what happened yesterday. But you can't throw boiling water at someone! You were born unable to feel pain. Heat doesn't scare you. But Rebecca has sensitive skin. What if it leaves a scar?"

From beginning to end, his eyes never once landed on my left hand that was now red and blistering from the boiling water.

I lowered my gaze and slowly wiped away the spilled water with a paper towel.

"She's walking around someone else's house dressed like that. I assumed she couldn't wait to replace the woman of the house. I'm just helping wash away her bad luck."

Julian's expression froze. He glanced over at Rebecca's oversized men's shirt. He gulped but offered no explanation.

Nestled against his chest, Rebecca cried pitifully. "Jules, is Audrey still angry because I hurt her yesterday? I really didn't mean it. I never thought she'd actually throw hot water at me. Maybe I should leave. I don't want to make everyone uncomfortable…"

"Rebecca, go rest in the guest room. I'll talk to her."

Still sniffling, Rebecca left. As she passed by me, her lips curled ever so slightly, flashing a smile so quick that only I could've caught it.

Julian rubbed his temples and sighed. "Audrey, you used to be so reasonable. When did you become this vengeful? Rebecca was spoiled growing up. She doesn't think before she does things. It was just a prank. Do you really have to keep dragging this out and making things hard for everyone?

"I already said I'd buy you that bag you've been eyeing next week. I'll take you to the hospital tomorrow and make sure you get the best treatment. Let's put this behind us now, okay?"

I said nothing. I simply walked into the bedroom and pulled open a drawer. Inside lay my bank card, my ID, my health insurance card, and an annual payment statement from Serenity Rehabilitation Center on the west side of the city.

My mother lived there.

Years ago, a house fire had killed my father. The trauma left Mom with severe PTSD.

That was one of the reasons I'd stayed with Julian for the past five years. He had always treated Mom well, often accompanying me on visits.

I packed everything into a canvas bag.

Julian leaned against the bedroom doorway with his arms crossed. His expression darkened. "Where are you going? I haven't even made you apologize to Rebecca yet, and you're throwing a tantrum with me?"

"I'm going to see my mom. Everyone in this house makes me sick," I replied.

He strode forward and grabbed my shoulder. "Audrey, all your cards are tied to my accounts. Before you walk out that door, have you thought this through?"

"I've thought it through very clearly."

The yarn spilled across the counter, tangled and mismatched in color. It was what remained of my attempt to knit a replacement blanket after Mom died. I had knitted and unraveled it, then knitted it again. Eventually, I realized that some things could copy a shape but never the soul. After a long while, Julian closed the case. He didn't argue or beg. He simply held the case in his arms and backed out of the shop. When he reached the steps outside, he stumbled, like a hollow shell without a soul. The wind chime continued ringing behind him long after he'd gone.I lowered my head and continued blending essential oils. The timer on my bracelet vibrated, reminding me to check my skin.…A month later, early in the morning, when I opened the shop and stepped outside to sweep the entrance, I saw an envelope on the front step. There was no name on it. Inside, there was a bank card and a handwritten note. The handwriting was messy, as though the writer's hand had been trembling."Aud

Julian's voice was gentler than ever as he spoke, "See, Audrey? I told you she wouldn't be around to disgust you anymore. I've repaid the debt I owed her from childhood. From now on, there's only you."He took a step forward. His voice trembled. "Can we start over?"I looked at the mess on the floor. Then, I picked up a broom from the corner and swept the broken glass into a pile. My movements were calm, as though I were dealing with an ordinary household chore."Julian, do you know what you look like right now? You look like a stray dog that's just taken a shit on someone's floor, then carried over a bone, expecting praise."The hope on his face shattered instantly.I pulled out my phone and dialed 911, putting the call on speaker."Hello, officer? I'm calling from Audrey's Scents on West Street. Someone vandalized my shop, caused a disturbance, and destroyed a significant amount of property. Yes, he's still here."The dispatcher began confirming my address. Meanwhile, Julian

Julian's voice was trembling."Come back with me. I'll transfer every share I own to you. I'll spend the rest of my life by your side."He laid out what he believed were his most valuable bargaining chips—stocks, wealth, and a future with him. Like a gamble throwing down his last cards, he was convinced there was no way I'd refuse.I reached beneath the counter and picked up a small knife I used for trimming fragrance ingredients. Slowly, I spun it once between my fingers. The blade gleamed coldly under the warm light."You punished Rebecca? You're the one who took the blanket. You're the one who went to a concert with someone else while my mom ran screaming into a storm."I pointed the knife at him and continued, "Julian Prescott, the most disgusting thing about you is that you always think you control everyone's limits. You're not here to make amends. You just can't stand the fact that the pet you kept in a cage finally grew claws."The color drained from his face. His lips mov

The lighter clicked. A small orange flame illuminated Julian's face. His cheekbones were noticeably sharper than six months ago. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, while his jaw remained tense, like a taut wire ready to snap.Staring at the blurry figure in the photograph, his grip tightened until his knuckles turned white."Six months." He exhaled a stream of smoke and smiled faintly. "She should have calmed down by now." That evening, a fine drizzle settled over Jonburg.I was just about to pull down the shutter when the sound of dress shoes over cobblestones stopped outside my shop. The steps were steady and controlled yet trembling ever so slightly. Then, I caught the scent of expensive oud and sandalwood. I'd known that fragrance for five years. I could've recognized it from the other end of the street.I didn't look up. Instead, I continued checking the numbers on my account book.A tall shadow crossed the threshold and stopped about three feet away.I could feel his eyes

Julian shoved Rebecca to the ground, his voice colder than ice."Get out! From today on, you won't land another acting job in this city. You won't be able to borrow a single cent. I want you to pay a price you'll never be able to afford for every little joke you've ever played."Rebecca collapsed on the floor, crying so hard her makeup streaked down her face. She reached for the leg of his pants and begged, "Julian, I was wrong. I didn't mean for this to happen…"He kicked her hand away, then strode into the bedroom, the door slamming behind him. Slowly, he slid down the door, sinking to the floor. The two crumpled sheets of paper remained in his hands. He bowed his head, resting his forehead against his knees. His shoulders began to shake violently. For the first time, Julian finally understood what pain felt like. After listening to the story, I thanked Dr. Wilson and ended the call.Outside the window, the warm, humid breeze of the south drifted through the air.I glanced do

Julian let out a laugh, as if he'd just heard a ridiculous joke. "Audrey, I can't believe you'd actually jinx your own mother. Do you have any bottom line at all?"I hung up, pulled out the SIM card, and snapped it in half with my fingertips. The pieces fell into the muddy water and were swept away by the rain.I lowered my head and held Mom even tighter. The way she curled up was almost exactly how she used to lie in her hospital bed. Only now, there was no blanket left to protect her.At dawn, the rescue team found us. When they tried to lift Mom from my arms, I let go.Over the next few days, I took care of everything—the funeral home, the cremation, and the urn. When I signed the paperwork, the staff member glanced at me. He saw a young woman covered in injuries, with an expression calmer than any grieving family member he had ever seen.Little did he know that simply making it this far had already taken everything I had.…On the fourth night, I returned to that "home".J
