Chapter 1

In the emergency surgery room, a nurse used surgical scissors to cut away the blackened blister on my arm. Blood mixed with pus dripped into a tray below, each drop landing with a faint tap.

In the bed beside me, another burn victim was sobbing uncontrollably while her boyfriend knelt on the floor, gently blowing on her wound.

Meanwhile, I sat silently on a stool, staring at the burn wound that reached deep into my dermis, expressionless.

The nurse paused and looked at me. "Doesn't it hurt?"

"I was born with congenital insensitivity to pain."

The scent of burned flesh filled the air. It was coming from me.

The nurse didn't say anything more. She simply worked faster.

My phone vibrated in my pocket. Julian Prescott had sent me a 60-second voice message. I tapped it open with one hand, and his voice came through the speaker—low, gentle, and patient, as though he were soothing a child.

"Audrey, be good. Don't hold this against Rebecca. She's been sheltered her whole life. She was just curious and thought your condition was fascinating. I've already scolded her and even took away her credit card as punishment.

"I've booked an appointment with the best burn specialist in Bestcare Hospital. I'll take you tomorrow. Don't worry. I won't let you be left with a scar."

In the entire 60 seconds, not once did he ask how severe the injury was. He didn't even ask which hospital I was in or whether anyone was there with me.

The message beneath his words was clear—the matter had already been handled, and I should let it go.

A notification appeared from my social media. Rebecca Grant had posted a new update. In the photo, the floor-to-ceiling windows of a Michelin-starred restaurant overlooked a twinkling city skyline. At the center of the shot, a well-defined hand was cutting a medium-rare steak into bite-sized pieces.

I recognized the watch on that hand immediately. It was a limited edition Patek Philippe Nautilus. I'd spent eight months saving for it to give it to Julian as a birthday present.

The caption of the post read, "My punishment for losing a bet is letting Jules treat me to delicious steak."

Julian said he'd scolded Rebecca. He said he'd taken away her credit card. Yet, he'd left me alone in the emergency room to deal with my injury while he was out for a Michelin-starred dinner with the person who had burned me.

When I returned home, the house was empty. A pair of fuzzy pink slippers with satin bows on top sat by the entrance. They were Rebecca's.

She had moved in two months ago, and traces of her were appearing in the house more and more, taking over the spaces that had once belonged to me.

I pushed open the bathroom door and undressed with one hand.

In the past, whenever I showered after getting hurt, Julian would carefully wrap every scrape and bruise in plastic wrap. He would test the water temperature three times before finally letting me step inside.

Today, I stood beneath the showerhead, letting warm water splash over my body. It seeped through the edges of the bandages and soaked into the wound. The white gauze slowly turned pink, like a blooming flower.

I couldn't feel the pain in my flesh. But every breath felt as if shattered glass were grinding through my chest.

Steam clouded the mirror. I wiped away a small patch and stared at my pale face.

Suddenly, I realized something. The pain receptor called Julian Prescott had rotted away long ago. It had rotted inside every instance of favoritism toward Rebecca and every compromise that came without limits.

After drying off, I sat on the edge of the bed. I stared at a text message for a reservation confirmation on my phone.

Julian and I had booked a table at a famous fine dining restaurant that required reservations six months in advance. We were supposed to celebrate our fifth anniversary tomorrow night.

I called the restaurant.

"Hello. How may I help you?"

"I'd like to cancel my reservation for tomorrow at 7:00 pm. It's under Audrey Sinclair."

"Miss, this booking has been on our waiting list for six months. Are you sure? We could help you reschedule—"

"No." My voice was quiet but steady. "We don't ever need a table anymore."

After hanging up, I opened WhatsApp and found Julian's contact information. His status message was still, "I'll bear the pain you can't feel".

I muted our chat.

The room fell into silence. All that was left was the sound of water dripping from my soaked bandages onto the floor.

For five years, this man had borne all my pain. Yet, now, he personally handed a knife to someone else to stab me with it, then smiled as he pressed a Band-Aid over the wound.

Tomorrow, Julian would come home. He would discover that our anniversary dinner was gone. He would discover that I hadn't replied to any of his messages.

And this time, I wasn't going to wait for him to feel the pain for me.

The yarn spilled across the counter, tangled and mismatched in color. It was what remained of my attempt to knit a replacement blanket after Mom died. I had knitted and unraveled it, then knitted it again. Eventually, I realized that some things could copy a shape but never the soul. After a long while, Julian closed the case. He didn't argue or beg. He simply held the case in his arms and backed out of the shop. When he reached the steps outside, he stumbled, like a hollow shell without a soul. The wind chime continued ringing behind him long after he'd gone.I lowered my head and continued blending essential oils. The timer on my bracelet vibrated, reminding me to check my skin.…A month later, early in the morning, when I opened the shop and stepped outside to sweep the entrance, I saw an envelope on the front step. There was no name on it. Inside, there was a bank card and a handwritten note. The handwriting was messy, as though the writer's hand had been trembling."Aud

Julian's voice was gentler than ever as he spoke, "See, Audrey? I told you she wouldn't be around to disgust you anymore. I've repaid the debt I owed her from childhood. From now on, there's only you."He took a step forward. His voice trembled. "Can we start over?"I looked at the mess on the floor. Then, I picked up a broom from the corner and swept the broken glass into a pile. My movements were calm, as though I were dealing with an ordinary household chore."Julian, do you know what you look like right now? You look like a stray dog that's just taken a shit on someone's floor, then carried over a bone, expecting praise."The hope on his face shattered instantly.I pulled out my phone and dialed 911, putting the call on speaker."Hello, officer? I'm calling from Audrey's Scents on West Street. Someone vandalized my shop, caused a disturbance, and destroyed a significant amount of property. Yes, he's still here."The dispatcher began confirming my address. Meanwhile, Julian

Julian's voice was trembling."Come back with me. I'll transfer every share I own to you. I'll spend the rest of my life by your side."He laid out what he believed were his most valuable bargaining chips—stocks, wealth, and a future with him. Like a gamble throwing down his last cards, he was convinced there was no way I'd refuse.I reached beneath the counter and picked up a small knife I used for trimming fragrance ingredients. Slowly, I spun it once between my fingers. The blade gleamed coldly under the warm light."You punished Rebecca? You're the one who took the blanket. You're the one who went to a concert with someone else while my mom ran screaming into a storm."I pointed the knife at him and continued, "Julian Prescott, the most disgusting thing about you is that you always think you control everyone's limits. You're not here to make amends. You just can't stand the fact that the pet you kept in a cage finally grew claws."The color drained from his face. His lips mov

The lighter clicked. A small orange flame illuminated Julian's face. His cheekbones were noticeably sharper than six months ago. Dark circles shadowed his eyes, while his jaw remained tense, like a taut wire ready to snap.Staring at the blurry figure in the photograph, his grip tightened until his knuckles turned white."Six months." He exhaled a stream of smoke and smiled faintly. "She should have calmed down by now." That evening, a fine drizzle settled over Jonburg.I was just about to pull down the shutter when the sound of dress shoes over cobblestones stopped outside my shop. The steps were steady and controlled yet trembling ever so slightly. Then, I caught the scent of expensive oud and sandalwood. I'd known that fragrance for five years. I could've recognized it from the other end of the street.I didn't look up. Instead, I continued checking the numbers on my account book.A tall shadow crossed the threshold and stopped about three feet away.I could feel his eyes

Julian shoved Rebecca to the ground, his voice colder than ice."Get out! From today on, you won't land another acting job in this city. You won't be able to borrow a single cent. I want you to pay a price you'll never be able to afford for every little joke you've ever played."Rebecca collapsed on the floor, crying so hard her makeup streaked down her face. She reached for the leg of his pants and begged, "Julian, I was wrong. I didn't mean for this to happen…"He kicked her hand away, then strode into the bedroom, the door slamming behind him. Slowly, he slid down the door, sinking to the floor. The two crumpled sheets of paper remained in his hands. He bowed his head, resting his forehead against his knees. His shoulders began to shake violently. For the first time, Julian finally understood what pain felt like. After listening to the story, I thanked Dr. Wilson and ended the call.Outside the window, the warm, humid breeze of the south drifted through the air.I glanced do

Julian let out a laugh, as if he'd just heard a ridiculous joke. "Audrey, I can't believe you'd actually jinx your own mother. Do you have any bottom line at all?"I hung up, pulled out the SIM card, and snapped it in half with my fingertips. The pieces fell into the muddy water and were swept away by the rain.I lowered my head and held Mom even tighter. The way she curled up was almost exactly how she used to lie in her hospital bed. Only now, there was no blanket left to protect her.At dawn, the rescue team found us. When they tried to lift Mom from my arms, I let go.Over the next few days, I took care of everything—the funeral home, the cremation, and the urn. When I signed the paperwork, the staff member glanced at me. He saw a young woman covered in injuries, with an expression calmer than any grieving family member he had ever seen.Little did he know that simply making it this far had already taken everything I had.…On the fourth night, I returned to that "home".J
