Chapter 5

Autor: Candy Sweetie
I looked up at the wedding photo that Andrea and I had taken inside Tessaria Cathedral, hanging on the wall in the foyer. I took out my phone and called Andrea. "What are you doing, Andrea?"

Andrea's deep voice carried a hint of warmth. "I'm thinking of you, Amore."

I chuckled bitterly, thinking it was such a shame that the very last thing he ever said to me was another lie.

I spent those few hours removing every trace of myself from the villa. I neatly put all the jewelry and gifts Andrea had given me in the closet. I burned everything else that belonged to me. I took only one suitcase filled with the essentials.

I placed my hand over my still-flat belly as I stood in the living room of the villa. I then looked down and whispered gently to the little one growing inside me, "I'm so sorry, but even if it's just the two of us, I'll make sure you grow up surrounded by love."

I had two hours left. I left my phone—which was still constantly buzzing with messages—on the dining table and grabbed some cash. I then walked out the door and hailed a cab to Tessaria Cathedral. I didn't go there for any particular reason other than to get one last look at what had destroyed my five-year relationship.

I got out of the cab as soon as it pulled up along the street outside the cathedral. I walked slowly down the cobblestone path and crossed through the main area, weaving through tourists, until I paused at the side chapel.

That was when I caught sight of them.

Andrea was wearing a dark gray suit, looking no different from the man I remembered five years ago. He stood beside Emilia, who was wearing a white wedding dress. He lowered his head and gently nuzzled her forehead with his nose, while Emilia wrapped her arms around his shoulders, rose onto her toes, and kissed him on the chin.

I was suddenly reminded of five years ago, when Andrea had proposed to me. That evening, Andrea had gotten down on one knee and looked up at me with a sparkle in his eyes. He had said, "I swear you're the only one I'll love for the rest of my life, Carina."

I didn't know what my expression had looked like back then, but perhaps I had looked just like Emilia did now—grinning from ear to ear as I stood on tiptoes, feeling as though I had the whole world in the palm of my hand.

In that instant, the camera shutter clicked, capturing their smiles and also pulling me back to reality.

I turned around and walked back the way I came, only to find that rain had started pattering down outside the cathedral. I dragged my suitcase along and climbed into the backseat, then looked out through the rain-streaked window.

I spotted Andrea off in the distance. Emilia was pulling him along as she ran out of the cathedral's main hall. He stumbled behind her for a moment, but the smile never left his face. He opened an umbrella and carefully protected Emilia from the rain before helping her into the black sedan I knew so well.

Andrea, as though feeling a sudden tug of intuition, looked up sharply in my direction.

Through the curtain of rain, I noticed the utter shock written all over his face the moment our eyes met.

Andrea stepped aside with a defeated look, making way for me.I walked around him under his watchful gaze and headed for the dormitory building. Just as I reached the end of the hallway, Andrea's voice rang out, full of anguish. "If I hadn't messed up so badly on our wedding anniversary, would you have chosen to stay with me, Carina?"I didn't bother turning around as I replied, "I wouldn't, because long before that night, you had already betrayed our marriage."I returned to my dorm and leaned against the door. I placed my hand over my baby bump, feeling the little one kicking me gently from within. I slowly slid down the door until I was sitting on the floor, keeping my hand gently over my bump as the baby kicked me again.I knew Andrea wouldn't just give up that easily, and the following few days proved me right. He didn't force his way into my personal life, but he kept showing up silently in the cafeteria and along my daily commute, standing off in the distance just watchi

Carina's POVHaving signed the NDA to participate in the confidential project, my former identity was completely sealed away. I was only a researcher identified by a code name from then on. I was no longer Carina Russo, the Donna of the Pietranera Famiglia. I had always been confined by my role as the Donna after marrying Andrea and had spent years doing nothing with my life.I barely had time to dwell on my past, especially given the intense workload. I spent more than 12 hours a day in the lab, trying to make up for the five years of progress I had missed. I noticed that even though my belly had grown bigger day by day, no one threw questioning looks my way. In a place like this, as long as I kept up with the experiments, they couldn't be bothered with my personal affairs. In the blink of an eye, five months had gone by. We had just wrapped up the first phase of the experiment that day, and the whole team was thrilled. That evening, the research institute held a party to celeb

"Get someone to bring Emilia here," Andrea ordered coldly, sounding as cold as the sea off Sicanoria in the dead of winter.Emilia was brought to the villa half an hour later. She was still wearing the wedding dress, its white fabric splattered with mud, making her look disheveled and pitiful. She had a bad feeling about what was coming, but she still held onto a bit of hope. She assumed that even if everything came to light, Andrea would just give her a stern talking-to and spare her any real punishment because of her pregnancy, especially since he'd promised to let her carry the Pietranera Famiglia bloodline.Andrea sat on the couch and tossed Carina's phone right in front of her, the screen still showing the taunting messages she had sent. "You sent these messages to Carina."Emilia trembled as she instinctively tried to deny it. "I-I have no idea whose phone this is! I didn't do anything! You have to believe me, Andrea!""You should think for once with that stupid brain of yo

I looked at the sheets of rain beating against the car window, obscuring the stone facade of Tessaria Cathedral.I sat in the backseat of the car the classified project had arranged for me. I watched Andrea's lips move, seemingly eager to explain himself. It didn't matter to me anymore, though; after all, the NDA stated plainly that once I joined the project, I had to cut off all ties with everyone in my life and refrain from contacting anyone for the next five years.I looked at my flat belly, carrying a little life that only I knew about. I had originally planned to share the good news with Andrea at our fifth anniversary dinner, but that single text message destroyed everything. It wasn't long before the convoy sped out of Sicanoria. I watched the streets blur past the window and closed my eyes, thinking that nothing here had anything to do with me anymore.…Third-Person's POVIn the meantime, Andrea stood at the entrance of the cathedral, his eyes widening in surprise. I heard the sound of a wine glass hitting the floor and shattering. I then saw a teary-eyed Emilia running upstairs right after Andrea pulled away from me.Arturo offered an apologetic smile and said, "I'm so sorry about that. Emilia accidentally dropped her wine glass. You can keep going, Don Pietranera and Donna Pietranera."Andrea immediately let go of me, his gaze cold as he tracked Emilia's departure. He sat on the couch in a daze as the party went on around us, completely ignoring me.It was only when Arturo walked over and gave him a telling look that he snapped out of it. "How about we talk upstairs for a second, Don Pietranera?"Andrea brought me a few pastries and placed them in front of me. He then said gently, "I have something to deal with. I'll be back in a while, so stay here and wait for me, Carina."I nodded and watched them make their way upstairs. Andrea was in such a hurry that he probably didn't even realize that he was walking faster than Arturo. I didn't b
