Chapter 2

مؤلف: Sweetie Moore
What a fool I was. I had actually been worried about her burning out.

So, Cyrus and I worked ourselves ragged, taking on any part-time work that came our way, just to save a little more money and make her life easier.

However, the wedding I had envisioned never came. Instead, I watched Celia marry someone else.

Cyrus was furious on my behalf. He stormed off to the wedding venue to confront Celia. A BMW ran a red light and hit him.

I watched the car hit him. Blood splashed across the pavement. His guts lay scattered on the ground.

Just thinking about that scene made my heart clench painfully. I turned pale as my body swayed, barely standing straight.

Celia thought I was upset over the photos. She rushed to steady me.

“Ethan, I can explain. They were just quick snapshots from my business trips.

“If it bothers you that much, I’ll take pictures with you next time. We can even bring Cyrus along and make it a family thing.”

My knuckles turned white from gripping the hem of my shirt too hard. Tears streamed down my face subconsciously.

Cyrus was gone. I did not have any family left.

She saw me crying and started to panic. She hurriedly wiped my tears away.

“Oh, come on. It’s nothing. Why are you crying over something so small? I promise it won’t happen again, alright?”

She was still speaking when Mason arrived in his groom’s suit.

“Celia, what are you doing out here? The ceremony’s about to start.”

He did not notice me until he got closer. His face went pale. He slapped himself across the face and stammered as he apologized.

“Mr. Grant, I had no idea you’d be here. I’m so sorry. I’ll get out of your way right now. The groom’s spot is yours.”

Celia looked at his reddened cheek pitifully and quickly helped him up.

“Stop apologizing for everything. You’re the man of the hour today. Man up.”

Then, she looked at me with a pleading expression

“Ethan, I let that little stunt you pulled on the phone slide. Don’t tell me you’re going to be that petty and crash Mason’s wedding too?”

I was her husband. The wedding should have been mine.

What did she mean by me pulling a stunt and crashing the wedding?

Her words were supposed to hurt me. But the moment I found out that Cyrus had passed away, I felt numb.

I said plainly, “Okay, I’ll leave.”

Cyrus’ body was still at the hospital. I needed to go get him.

Celia thought she had convinced me. She smiled and pulled from her bag two small party favors that she had prepared to hand out to the children and some money.

She stuffed them into my hands and said, “Give this to Cyrus. You can buy him something good. You don’t have to tell me what it is or how much you spend.”

She touched my face and said with a bright smile, “Come on, don’t be so dramatic. It’s just a wedding. After all this is over, you can have yours whenever you want. I’ll do whatever you say.”

She only felt at ease after watching me leave. Only then did she head back to the wedding hall.

I left the venue without looking back.

But Celia still did not know Cyrus was dead. I did not even want to be engaged with her any longer, let alone have a wedding.

I stood at the curb and called the traffic police.

...

On the other end of the line, the officer offered his condolences.

“The driver fled the scene. We’ll let you know as soon as we have any updates.”

“I appreciate that.”

I hung up and rushed to the hospital.

Our parents had died when we were young. Cyrus and I were sent to an orphanage and grew up together. We had no one but each other. After I got into college, I brought him along to the big city.

I met Celia at a restaurant, where we both worked. During her shift, she jumped in to defend a coworker whose boyfriend was abusing her. Celia almost got hit by the man.

Celia hesitated, as if she wanted to say something more. In the end, she simply placed a document in front of me. “Mason explained that he did not mean for any of this to happen. I’ve helped you draft a letter of leniency for the judge. Could you sign it so he can receive a lighter sentence? Don’t worry, I know you’ve been wronged. Just name your terms.”So, she came for Mason after all. That was very generous of her.She had withheld my money and used it to buy Mason a car. In the end, Cyrus died under that very car I had saved so hard to afford. How utterly ironic.Celia thought I was considering it, so she quickly pulled out a pen.I coldly slapped her pen away.“I’m not going to sign that, Celia. I want a divorce.”“What? You want to divorce me? Why?”Celia did not bother with the pen that had fallen in the car. She turned and stared at me in shock. “You’re just saying that out of anger, right?“Ethan, I know Cyrus is gone, and you’re heartbroken. He was such a swee

“Celia, I don’t care if other people doubt me. But you can’t.“I’ve never asked you for anything. Please, help me...”Celia was moved, but she still shook her head. “The police already have all the evidence. There’s nothing more I can do for you.”Mason deeply regretted his action. If he had known this would happen, he should never have provoked me in the first place. What he did not know was that every deed left a footprint. My report to the police only accelerated the investigation.Even without the evidence I provided, the police would have found Mason eventually. He had committed a crime, and there was no escaping the law.Mason rolled up his sleeve and revealed the scar on his arm. “Celia, can you help me one last time, for the sake of the fact that I once saved you?“Just this once. After that, you won’t owe me a thing.”Celia stared at the scar, and she lowered her gaze for a moment. “What do you want me to do?”A flash of joy crossed Mason’s face.“I can’t get out

At the time of Cyrus’ death, the building across the street was broadcasting live about her wedding to Mason. It made her realize that Cyrus had been in an accident on the very day of her wedding. That brought back the memory of my phone call begging for surgery money. At that time, she had instinctively assumed I was just causing trouble. After all, she not only did not inform me about her wedding to Mason in advance, but had also broadcast it live across the city.If I saw it, I would have definitely objected and tried to stop it.So, she thought that I had not really been calling about the money. I just wanted her to come running to me so I could stop the wedding.Cyrus was the only family I had left. She never could have believed I would jinx my own brother just to spoil her ceremony.Back then, she had even felt somewhat disappointed in me. She thought I had lost myself and was not the same boy she once knew.In the end, she finally realized she had misjudged me completel

She had originally wanted to text me about it. But when she saw the single gray check mark, she had no choice but to ask around.“I’ve been so swamped with work lately that I completely lost track of Cyrus. Do you know what grade Cyrus is? Is he in junior year?”She sighed as she realized she had neglected me for too long.Recalling the good times we once shared, she felt a twinge of regret. She ordered an expensive gift and planned to apologize to me when we met. In her mind, I loved her so much. I would surely forgive her, and we would get back together. She had no choice but to approach a random student to ask about Cyrus.Several students recognized the name when she said Cyrus. He had attended both middle school and high school at that school. Soon, a former classmate recognized Celia.“Are you Cyrus’ sister-in-law?”Celia was overjoyed. As long as someone recognized her, that was good. She quickly responded, “Yes, I am. Can you tell me which class Cyrus is in now? I n

Celia then realized she was no longer able to see my status. Her knuckles turned white from gripping her phone too hard. She asked Mason furiously, “Don’t you think you owe me an explanation? What is going on?”Mason had not expected me to actually call the police. His face turned pale as he explained, “I don’t know. I was busy with the wedding that day. I don’t know anything.”The police officers had not mentioned the time of Cyrus’ death, yet he had blurted it out immediately. That clearly showed he had something to do with it.Celia raised an eyebrow and questioned him, “Are you sure you didn’t do anything? Mason, you know what happens when someone lies to me, don’t you?”He smiled bitterly and said, “Celia, if you don’t trust me, then just fire me.“If I’d known this would happen, you never should have helped me make my dream come true. It got you and your husband fighting. Now, on top of everything, we’re caught up in this whole disaster.“At the end of the day, it’s all m

Celia’s eyes welled up with tears. She threw the bank card at me as she said furiously, “So, that’s what it was. I wondered why he had been randomly slapping himself out of nowhere. It turns out you’ve been bullying him behind my back this whole time.”I did not bother to explain or argue with her. I just picked up the bank card from the floor and walked away without looking back.Celia raised an eyebrow and wanted to chase after me. Just then, Mason coughed up blood and acted tough, saying, “Celia, I’m just a lowly bodyguard. Don’t let me come between you and your husband. You should just fire me.”Celia’s eyes welled up. She gave him a soft, exasperated punch on his shoulder.“Don’t be ridiculous. You saved my life. If I fired you now, everyone would call me heartless and ungrateful.“Don’t overthink it. Let me get you patched up first.“Don’t worry about Ethan. He’s easy to smooth things over with.”I did not stay to listen to the rest. Instead, I went to the bank and c
