Chapter 3

مؤلف: Sweetie Moore
The abusive man was about to slap Celia, but I got in the way. That was how I met her.

After a while, that same couple reconciled and filed a complaint against us, causing us to get fired.

At the time, I did not know Celia came from a wealthy family. She was just working there to see how working-class people lived. Afraid she might not have enough to eat, I paid for all her meals.

She came to my place every day and never minded our messy, cramped living conditions. She even complimented my cooking.

On top of that, she was incredibly attentive to Cyrus. She often tutored him in his schoolwork and even became his free language tutor.

Soon, we started dating.

I discovered her true identity after graduation. I had taken a side job as a server at a wealthy family’s birthday party. I never expected the birthday girl to be Celia.

That day, I made a mistake and knocked over a glass. A client had slapped me hard and humiliated me.

Everyone kept their distance, but she gathered her dress and ran to me under the spotlight.

She bravely defended me. “How dare you slap my boyfriend? Do you have a death wish?!”

That scene almost felt like it came from a romance film.

But no one supported us. Everyone said that Celia was way out of my league. Even I thought that was the end of it.

Unexpectedly, she was willing to cut off her parents just to marry me.

After we got our marriage license, her parents cut off all her allowance. I felt sorry that a privileged young lady like her had to suffer hardship with me, so I voluntarily handed over my bank card.

For a few years, we were poor, but we were happy.

Eventually, her parents could not bear to see her struggle anymore, so they reluctantly gave in.

Yet nothing changed between us. We still shared with each other about our every expense.

My coworkers mocked me as a pushover. I just laughed and told them they would not understand it. For an orphan, being cared for was more important than money.

I was happy, and I thought it would last forever.

But everything changed after a fire two years ago.

After Celia was rescued from the fire by her bodyguards, she gave everyone a raise. She showed special treatment to Mason, the most handsome of them all.

She often had meals with him, bought him gifts, and even bought him a car and a house.

Every time I asked about it, she would say she was simply grateful for his help.

It was laughable how many times I naively believed her. I had even been looking forward to our wedding.

I stood before Cyrus’ body, sobbing uncontrollably.

If I had not kept bringing up the wedding, my brother would not have been so furious when he saw Celia and Mason getting married.

If Cyrus had still been working the part-time job with me and never gone to that intersection road, the accident may not have happened.

But there were no ifs. In the end, I was the reason he died.

Just then, my phone buzzed violently, pulling me back to reality.

It was Celia.

[Are you coming home tonight?]

I sent a reply. [No.]

[What are you doing? Why aren’t you coming home?]

When I saw her text, I simply held Cyrus’ cold and stiff hand. I did not want to talk to her any longer.

After a long while, Celia did not send anymore messages.

The mortician came by. He told me that restoring Cyrus’ body would be difficult and would cost ten thousand dollars.

I could not afford that fee. I had no relatives, and I was not very close with my coworkers. There was simply no one I could borrow money from.

I thought it over and decided that I still had to go find Celia and get my bank card back.

Celia hesitated, as if she wanted to say something more. In the end, she simply placed a document in front of me. “Mason explained that he did not mean for any of this to happen. I’ve helped you draft a letter of leniency for the judge. Could you sign it so he can receive a lighter sentence? Don’t worry, I know you’ve been wronged. Just name your terms.”So, she came for Mason after all. That was very generous of her.She had withheld my money and used it to buy Mason a car. In the end, Cyrus died under that very car I had saved so hard to afford. How utterly ironic.Celia thought I was considering it, so she quickly pulled out a pen.I coldly slapped her pen away.“I’m not going to sign that, Celia. I want a divorce.”“What? You want to divorce me? Why?”Celia did not bother with the pen that had fallen in the car. She turned and stared at me in shock. “You’re just saying that out of anger, right?“Ethan, I know Cyrus is gone, and you’re heartbroken. He was such a swee

“Celia, I don’t care if other people doubt me. But you can’t.“I’ve never asked you for anything. Please, help me...”Celia was moved, but she still shook her head. “The police already have all the evidence. There’s nothing more I can do for you.”Mason deeply regretted his action. If he had known this would happen, he should never have provoked me in the first place. What he did not know was that every deed left a footprint. My report to the police only accelerated the investigation.Even without the evidence I provided, the police would have found Mason eventually. He had committed a crime, and there was no escaping the law.Mason rolled up his sleeve and revealed the scar on his arm. “Celia, can you help me one last time, for the sake of the fact that I once saved you?“Just this once. After that, you won’t owe me a thing.”Celia stared at the scar, and she lowered her gaze for a moment. “What do you want me to do?”A flash of joy crossed Mason’s face.“I can’t get out

At the time of Cyrus’ death, the building across the street was broadcasting live about her wedding to Mason. It made her realize that Cyrus had been in an accident on the very day of her wedding. That brought back the memory of my phone call begging for surgery money. At that time, she had instinctively assumed I was just causing trouble. After all, she not only did not inform me about her wedding to Mason in advance, but had also broadcast it live across the city.If I saw it, I would have definitely objected and tried to stop it.So, she thought that I had not really been calling about the money. I just wanted her to come running to me so I could stop the wedding.Cyrus was the only family I had left. She never could have believed I would jinx my own brother just to spoil her ceremony.Back then, she had even felt somewhat disappointed in me. She thought I had lost myself and was not the same boy she once knew.In the end, she finally realized she had misjudged me completel

She had originally wanted to text me about it. But when she saw the single gray check mark, she had no choice but to ask around.“I’ve been so swamped with work lately that I completely lost track of Cyrus. Do you know what grade Cyrus is? Is he in junior year?”She sighed as she realized she had neglected me for too long.Recalling the good times we once shared, she felt a twinge of regret. She ordered an expensive gift and planned to apologize to me when we met. In her mind, I loved her so much. I would surely forgive her, and we would get back together. She had no choice but to approach a random student to ask about Cyrus.Several students recognized the name when she said Cyrus. He had attended both middle school and high school at that school. Soon, a former classmate recognized Celia.“Are you Cyrus’ sister-in-law?”Celia was overjoyed. As long as someone recognized her, that was good. She quickly responded, “Yes, I am. Can you tell me which class Cyrus is in now? I n

Celia then realized she was no longer able to see my status. Her knuckles turned white from gripping her phone too hard. She asked Mason furiously, “Don’t you think you owe me an explanation? What is going on?”Mason had not expected me to actually call the police. His face turned pale as he explained, “I don’t know. I was busy with the wedding that day. I don’t know anything.”The police officers had not mentioned the time of Cyrus’ death, yet he had blurted it out immediately. That clearly showed he had something to do with it.Celia raised an eyebrow and questioned him, “Are you sure you didn’t do anything? Mason, you know what happens when someone lies to me, don’t you?”He smiled bitterly and said, “Celia, if you don’t trust me, then just fire me.“If I’d known this would happen, you never should have helped me make my dream come true. It got you and your husband fighting. Now, on top of everything, we’re caught up in this whole disaster.“At the end of the day, it’s all m

Celia’s eyes welled up with tears. She threw the bank card at me as she said furiously, “So, that’s what it was. I wondered why he had been randomly slapping himself out of nowhere. It turns out you’ve been bullying him behind my back this whole time.”I did not bother to explain or argue with her. I just picked up the bank card from the floor and walked away without looking back.Celia raised an eyebrow and wanted to chase after me. Just then, Mason coughed up blood and acted tough, saying, “Celia, I’m just a lowly bodyguard. Don’t let me come between you and your husband. You should just fire me.”Celia’s eyes welled up. She gave him a soft, exasperated punch on his shoulder.“Don’t be ridiculous. You saved my life. If I fired you now, everyone would call me heartless and ungrateful.“Don’t overthink it. Let me get you patched up first.“Don’t worry about Ethan. He’s easy to smooth things over with.”I did not stay to listen to the rest. Instead, I went to the bank and c
