Chapter 1

"So who exactly did you just call your husband?"

Nora lowered her camera. Her expression was appraising, and there was an edge of hostility under it.

For a moment I could only stare at her. Something in my chest cracked apart, like ice giving way underfoot.

Nora laughed softly, and the laugh never reached her eyes.

"I've seen women like you before. Before treatment they chase the doctors for a phone number. Once they're well, they cling to Vito and say they only want to thank him for saving their lives.

"But you should go look in a mirror. Seven years asleep. Your muscles have wasted down to nothing, and you're paler than a body in the morgue. Looking like that, who exactly do you think you're going to seduce?"

My mouth opened. Something heavy sat in my throat, and nothing came out.

A nurse pushed the door open, took one look at the scene, and hurried to smooth it over.

"Miss Bellini, the patient only just woke up. Her neurological function hasn't fully recovered yet, and she'll say confused things sometimes. Please don't hold it against her."

Nora glanced at her and lifted her chin.

"Fine. She's a patient. I won't hold it against her."

I lowered my head and let my hair hide the tears rising in my eyes. My voice came out dry.

"I'm sorry. My head hurts. I wasn't making any sense.

"I followed Mr. Ranieri's work before I entered the cryonics trial. I've admired his research for years, so seeing him on television got me worked up."

Only then did Nora's expression ease. She raised the camera again.

"You look like you're doing well. Your file says you were frozen for seven years. Have you managed to reach your family yet?"

The second the question landed, I felt like someone had pulled the bones out of my spine. I sagged back against the headboard.

Seven years had passed and my body hadn't changed at all. Even my skin still belonged to a woman in her twenties.

But traffic streamed across the overpass outside my window. New towers had gone up in the financial district. Even the little pothos on my windowsill had gone from a cutting to long trailing vines.

Everyone else had kept living, right on schedule.

Only I hadn't changed. A ghost the years had ground to pieces.

To the public, the institute was a charitable medical organization, founded with money raised by the Lucchese family's financial group. Nearly all of that funding came out of the family's underground businesses, which meant every major decision still went up to the family's leadership for approval.

So alongside the research it announced to the world, the institute also developed drugs for the family and provided private treatment to its members.

The year Vito and I married, he was already the youngest researcher there. At twenty-six, the Don had personally authorized him to run his own biological laboratory.

I was a racer with a bit of a name on the West Coast. I'd won plenty of underground meets.

The first time we met, his car broke down on the way to a family council session and his driver was sweating through his shirt. I put Vito on the back of my motorcycle and carried him across three bridges to get him there. Watching him hold the room and talk about his work, I fell without meaning to.

When we first got together, everyone said we didn't match.

His mother, Giulia, even asked to speak with me alone, and made it clear between the lines that a woman like me shouldn't imagine she could hitch herself to a man with Vito's future.

I came home crushed. Vito took both my hands and held them tight, and his eyes didn't waver.

"Lina, don't listen to any of them.

"In this life, you're the only one I'll ever choose."

After we married, he said a serious researcher had to stay focused, and that going public with a marriage too soon would only create noise.

So we kept it a secret for three full years.

Back then I thought it was romantic. A private contract that belonged to the two of us and nobody else.

"Vito. You falsified legal documents, you stole another man's research data, and you deceived this family. As of today you are expelled from the Lucchese family. Every title, every asset, and every research patent is stripped from you. From this day forward, no family in Sicily is to take you in. Get him out of my sight."Vito went slack on the floor and shouted himself hoarse. "No! Don Lucchese! Give me one more chance. I can still put it right—"The Don didn't so much as turn his head."I don't extend trust to a man whose mouth is full of lies."Ricardo. You'll handle the aftermath. Whatever your sister has lost is to be compensated first, out of Vito's assets."Ricardo nodded. "Understood."After the Don left, all that remained in the corridor was Vito kneeling with his back to us and the white of Nora's face.Nora looked at me and her lips moved, but in the end she said nothing.Sullivan, in her arms, had been badly frightened by all of it, and he pressed into her shoulder

Don Lucchese had come in person. Everyone who saw him backed out into the corridor at once and didn't dare lift their heads.I met his eyes. His features were sharp, an old man of seventy, leaning on an ebony cane, with two personal guards behind him.He nodded at me, took in the room, and his face went livid. Then he looked at Ricardo."Ricardo. You asked me to come. What is this about?"I looked at my brother, not following. He patted my shoulder to tell me it was all right, then inclined his head slightly toward the Don."The core research data behind Vito's cryonics technology was, in large part, lifted from an unpublished paper I wrote ten years ago."My head snapped around to him.He sighed. "Lina. Are you still going to cover for him?"Vito was out in the corridor, held down on his knees. The moment he heard, he lunged in and grabbed my hand."No, Lina, you can't. You know what I've put into this. If you say it, all of it is destroyed."Think about our son. He's so you

The next morning the nurses looked at me differently. There was contempt in it, and disgust.I was still trying to work out why when the door to my room was shoved open.A crowd came in with phones up. From the look of them they were enforcers and low-level associates, the bottom rung of the family."That's her!""Lina, you're the bitch who goes after other women's husbands?"The phone lenses were nearly against my face and the flashes were bright enough that I couldn't keep my eyes open.I shrank back on instinct, and a hand caught my arm and dragged me forward again."Don't run off. Let us get a look at you.""Seven years frozen, did it freeze your brain? Want us to help you sober up?"I had no idea why these people had come pouring in and nothing prepared for it. Between the lenses and the noise my mind went blank. I shut my eyes and curled into the corner of the bed, and every ounce of fight went out of me.Then the door was kicked in and a man's roar went off in the room

Nora stood in the doorway with a face like weather coming in."Mr. Ferraro has gone."She walked in, holding her temper down."He thinks a great deal of Vito. If you're the reason things go wrong from here, I won't let it go easily."I pushed myself upright and looked at her.Her voice went hard."So tell me now. What exactly is between you and my husband?"I looked into her eyes. There was suspicion in them, and wariness, and a thread of fear she couldn't quite bury. She was afraid. Afraid that a woman who had come out of nowhere would break apart seven years of settled happiness.I answered to provoke her. "Why don't you ask him? Whatever he says must be the truth."Nora's face went colder still."He says the two of you separated on good terms before you ever entered that chamber."My body jerked. "What?""Don't put on an act." Nora smiled without warmth. "He said the marriage was never public and you never completed any formal registration. He said after you were diagno

Vito didn't say anything. He just looked at me.I understood what he meant. He wanted me gone. He wanted me to disappear, to never turn up in front of his new family again."I'm not leaving."Vito, I'm not letting this go."His eyes darkened at once."What is it you actually want? You want me to divorce her and marry you? You want Sullivan to call you Mamma?"I didn't answer. His hand slowly closed into a fist."Or do you want to make that other matter public?"Lina, listen to me. If that gets out, it doesn't help anyone. With the resources and influence I have now, I can give Sullivan the best schooling and the best life there is. If it comes out, all of it is gone."He looked me over."Look at the state of you. You can't take care of him, and he won't accept you either. Could you really stand to watch him live poor and miserable?"The words went in like a knife.Sullivan seemed to sense that his father's tone had changed, and he twisted down out of Vito's arms. He ran at

His tone went soft. He took a step toward me."I know I've wronged you in this. But it's already happened. Can't you let me have it?"I looked at the face I had once loved and found it frightening in how unfamiliar it was."Let you have it?"He dropped his voice."Nora doesn't know any of it. Not about us, and not that you're Sullivan's birth mother. But Sullivan has treated her as his real mother his entire life. He's seven. How do you expect him to take a change like that? Could you really stand to break his happiness apart?"My hands shook and I couldn't stop them."I'll make it up to you," he went on. "I can give you money. I can arrange somewhere for you to live. You can start over completely. You were a racer before any of this. You'd do perfectly well without me. But Nora and Sullivan can't get by without me."Something in that made me laugh, and while I was laughing the tears came up."Vito, do you know why I agreed to get into that chamber?"He said nothing.I came
