Chapter 2

Author: Lennox Chase
She claimed that she was still waiting faithfully for me.

That she was saving all those experiences for when I came home so that we could do them together.

I knew she was lying, but I didn't dare confront her. All I could do was force myself to keep going.

The program was supposed to take seven years, but I completed all the coursework in four and returned home early. I wanted to ask her one question in person.

Why had she forgotten every promise she'd ever made to me?

......

Later, when Sandra learned I was coming home, she broke up with Shawn.

Her explanation was, "I was bored without you, so I found someone to pretend to be my boyfriend and keep me company. Shawn and I were never serious. You're the only man I've ever truly loved."

I believed her, and we got married.

After our wedding, she really did cut off all contact with Shawn.

It seemed as though she'd been telling the truth after all.

The day before Sandra and I were supposed to leave for our anniversary trip, I received a call from an unknown number.

It was Shawn.

"You really think Sandra loves you? She talks to me every day," he said tauntingly.

Then he sent me screenshot after screenshot of his flirtatious conversations with Sandra.

Sandra had written, "Shawn, I miss you."

"Shawn, I want to see you."

She had also written, "Shawn, you're the only man in my heart."

I refused to believe any of it. Shawn had to be trying to drive a wedge between Sandra and me.

After all, Sandra had told me that I was the only man she truly loved.

Shawn scoffed. "Fine, if you don't believe me, let's make a bet. You two are leaving for your anniversary trip tomorrow, right? Tomorrow, I'll message Sandra and tell her I have cancer. Let's see how she reacts. If she comes to me, you step aside. If she doesn't, I will."

I hesitated, but ultimately agreed.

Before hanging up, he said, "Theo, you're not going to win. The living can never compete with the dead."

......

When I got home, I unpacked everything I had just finished packing.

I already knew Sandra wouldn't be going on the trip with me.

When I got to the jewelry box, I stopped.

I had given Sandra all her jewelry, so I knew every piece she owned.

So when I saw a handmade friendship bracelet with a small gold charm set with her birthstone nestled among the expensive jewelry I'd given her, I didn't even need to guess who had given it to her.

It had to be Shawn, and she must have worn it for years because the cord was already frayed.

I stared at it for a long time, and I found myself imagining the touching love story behind it.

The thought made my own place in her life feel like a cruel joke.

In the end, I calmly put it away in the drawer.

Sandra didn't return until after midnight, exhaustion written all over her face.

She casually tossed her bag onto a chair, the scent of a man's pine cologne still clung to her.

She had been so intimate with Shawn earlier that day. It was only natural that his scent had rubbed off on her.

"We should cancel the anniversary trip. I've already told our parents we're too busy with work. We can go another time.

"For now, get some rest. I'll take care of everything at the company," I said, explaining the arrangements I'd made.

Hearing that, she seemed irritated. She sneered, "You seem awfully cheerful."

I froze, unable to understand what she meant.

Then she said, "Shawn has cancer. You must be thrilled that your only competition is about to disappear!

"I honestly don't understand you, Theo. How can you be so vicious?"

"That has never crossed my mind." I defended myself.

Every word she said cut straight through me.

I never imagined she would think so little of me.

I suddenly remembered something that had happened in high school.

I came down with a fever that one time and stayed home from school. I didn't tell Sandra because I didn't want her to worry.

But as soon as classes ended that day, she rushed straight to my house.

"Theo, why didn't you tell me you were sick?"

"I didn't want you to worry."

"But I'm your girlfriend. You're supposed to tell me everything. When two people are together, they shouldn't keep anything from each other!"

She sounded genuinely upset, and from that day forward, I worked to break that habit and began telling her everything.

The heart that had once beaten for her had flatlined long ago.I pushed her away and said coldly, "Sandra, you're a cheater."You love Shawn, but you can't bear to let me go. In the end, you lost everything."After that day, Sandra finally stopped harassing me.It was as though she had vanished from my life completely. The only news I heard about her came from Zane. Maybe in the past, I would've forgiven Sandra over and over again.I would've believed there was still a place for me in her heart. But after everything that had happened, Sandra's actions had made it clear that there was no place for me in her life and that she didn't love me.As for why she was desperately searching for me now, I could only assume that losing Shawn had left her devastated and she wanted another man to become her emotional crutch.Every day after that, Zane updated me on Sandra. One day, he told me that he and Sandra had attended a class reunion the night before. Some of our former teachers had been there too.One teacher jokingly asked Sandra, "You and Theo must be thinking about having kids by now. You two were always so in love. Couples like you two are rare."Sandra had frozen on the spot. She didn't say a word for a long time, and her knuckles turned white around her glass.Zane said, "I think she was remembering how much she once loved you and wondering why she

At that moment, all I could think about was how my father had controlled me since childhood. He forced me to learn piano, even though I hated it, and made me attend endless tutoring sessions.Meanwhile, my stepmother would beat me whenever he wasn't around. She told me she hated me and that I had no place in that family. Now, I was choosing to walk away.At last, I was finally free.......Before leaving, I went to see an old friend. His name was Zane Lynn, and he had once been a close friend of both Sandra and me.He was also the only friend I had in the world. When I told him I was leaving, he looked surprised. "What? Are you dying too?"His question made me laugh."I'm perfectly fine. It's just that I've finally seen things for what they are, and I want to leave this place and all its painful memories behind.""So you're really giving up on Sandra?"I had already told Zane everything that had happened between Sandra and Shawn.I had also told him that I had decided to let Sandra go.

That way, it wouldn't leave any marks, but each blow hurt even more.If I disobeyed, I was beaten. If I told anyone, the beating would only get worse. My father would beat me whenever my grades were bad, too.No one knew about this dark part of my past.Later, when my father forced me to study abroad, my stepmother came to me in private and warned, "You'd better get out of here, and fast!"Otherwise, I'll hurt that girl you like."I had no choice but to leave.Never would I have expected leaving the country to change so many things. When I came back to my senses, I had been beaten within an inch of my life, and my mouth was filled with blood.I couldn't fight back. All I could do was endure it.Eventually, the men grew tired and went off to rest.I seized the opportunity to reach for my phone and send an emergency text to 911.Ten minutes later, the police arrived. The moment the men heard the sirens, they panicked and fled. The young woman showed no fear. We borrowed school uniforms from a couple of current students and slipped onto campus, pretending we still went there. The school had changed a lot. The old, rundown athletic field had been rebuilt, and the classrooms had been renovated.Sandra took my hand as we walked."Theo, do you remember when I fainted on the field, and you carried me to the nurse's office?"As we passed the cafeteria, she continued, "You always slipped out of class early to grab my lunch before the rush and waited for me."You always knew what I liked without me having to say a word."I froze. Those weren't memories of us.They must have belonged to her and Shawn. Her heart was so consumed by Shawn that she had mistaken me for him.Sandra was truly cruel. How was this any different from shoving me off a cliff herself?"Sandra, there's a special place in hell for people who betray someone who truly loves them," I thought to myself.......I pulled my hand from hers and was about to tell her I felt sick and wanted

I knew what MECT involved.Electrical shocks would erase many of a patient's memories, including the painful ones. They would then no longer feel sad and hurt themselves.I fell into deep thought. After a long silence, I finally replied, "Maybe next time."With that, I took my medical report and left.I had barely stepped outside when I ran into Sandra. The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with suspicion."What are you doing here?"Of course. Shawn was in this hospital too. She was afraid I might hurt her precious Shawn.I gave a bitter laugh inwardly. "I came in for a checkup."She visibly relaxed. "What's wrong, Theo? Are you feeling sick?"I made up an excuse."I broke my leg a while back. I'm here for a follow-up."Don't worry. I'm not here to see Shawn.""Why didn't you tell me?"She grabbed my hand. "Why didn't you tell me when you broke your leg?"I thought for a moment before answering, "Because you were busy that day. That was the day you and Shawn started dating."Sandra, I
