Chapter 3

Author: Lennox Chase
I told her everything, from what time I woke up and went to bed to what I ate for dinner each night.

Even during the years I spent abroad, I gave her those little updates every day.

She was the one who told me that was how couples were supposed to be.

Yet now, she was the one hurting me like this.

Sandra seemed to realize how cruel her words had been and quickly tried to comfort me. "I'm sorry, Theo. I'm just upset."

Struggling to keep my emotions under control, I said, "Let's get some rest. I'll use the guest room tonight."

As I reached the door, Sandra suddenly wrapped her arms around my waist.

"Don't go. Don't leave me alone."

I froze. For one fleeting moment, I thought Sandra might still love me.

And once again, my resolve crumbled.

She fell asleep holding me as she always did, but I couldn't sleep. I sat against the headboard, staring out at the darkness beyond the window.

I felt completely hollow inside.

Then Sandra suddenly rolled over.

Tears streamed down her face as she murmured in her sleep, "Shawn, please don't leave me..."

An invisible hand seemed to close around my throat, leaving me unable to breathe.

......

Sandra rarely talked in her sleep.

Her words took me back to our wedding day. Specifically when Shawn had stormed into the ceremony.

His face was twisted in pain as he kept murmuring, "Sandy, don't leave me."

Sandra had responded coldly, "Security, please escort him out."

After security took Shawn away, I saw her hands clutching the fabric of her wedding dress.

I assumed it was just wedding-day nerves.

But that night, she showed no interest in spending our wedding night with me.

I assumed she was shy.

Then she murmured in her sleep, "Shawn, I'm sorry. I'm so sorry..."

That was when it finally hit me. Everything I'd believed was nothing more than what I wanted to believe.

Reality was cruel.

The next morning, Sandra got up early and went into the bathroom to get ready.

I was making the bed when she stormed out, her expression dark and her voice sharp with anger. "Where's my bracelet?"

Before I could answer, she shouted, "Theo Shaw, where is my bracelet? Who told you that you could touch my things?"

Her shouting left my ears ringing.

"It's in the drawer," I replied, rubbing my temples.

She immediately rushed to the drawer and grabbed the bracelet, clutching it in her palm as though it were her most precious possession.

The sight left me too heartsick to speak.

Shawn's cancer had changed Sandra completely.

It had laid her heart bare. She had never gotten over him, and she couldn't bear to let him go.

......

Every morning after that, Sandra made me breakfast before leaving the house.

I never asked where she was going, and she never told me.

She simply kissed me goodbye as usual and told me to wait for her to come home.

I secretly asked my assistant to find out where she went each day.

She visited the hospital every day and searched far and wide for specialists who might be able to save Shawn.

His cancer was, however, terminal. There was nothing anyone could do.

Every specialist gave her the same answer. They might be able to extend Shawn's life, but they couldn't cure him.

Each time Sandra heard those words, the despair on her face deepened.

One evening, I drove home from work as usual.

That was when I saw Sandra and Shawn in the yard.

Sandra was wearing a wedding dress, while Shawn wore a white suit.

He had grown so thin that the suit could only hang loosely from his body, and yet Sandra still gazed at him with nothing but love.

The setting sun bathed them in golden light as they held hands, their faces glowing with happiness.

A photographer captured the happy scene for them.

Shawn looked up and spotted me sitting in the car.

His eyes gleamed with triumph.

His expression seemed to say that I had never stood a chance against him.

After I lost our bet, Shawn had texted me and told me it was time for me to step aside.

But walking away would have meant giving him exactly what he wanted, so I told him I'd changed my mind.

He snapped, "Theo, you're such a sore loser.

"But even if you refuse to leave, Sandra only has eyes for me. All you'll do is keep making yourself miserable."

In that moment, I had to admit he had a point.

Maybe in the past, I would've forgiven Sandra over and over again.I would've believed there was still a place for me in her heart. But after everything that had happened, Sandra's actions had made it clear that there was no place for me in her life and that she didn't love me.As for why she was desperately searching for me now, I could only assume that losing Shawn had left her devastated and she wanted another man to become her emotional crutch.Every day after that, Zane updated me on Sandra. One day, he told me that he and Sandra had attended a class reunion the night before. Some of our former teachers had been there too.One teacher jokingly asked Sandra, "You and Theo must be thinking about having kids by now. At that moment, all I could think about was how my father had controlled me since childhood. He forced me to learn piano, even though I hated it, and made me attend endless tutoring sessions.Meanwhile, my stepmother would beat me whenever he wasn't around. She told me she hated me and that I had no place in that family. Now, I was choosing to walk away.At last, I was finally free.......Before leaving, I went to see an old friend. His name was Zane Lynn, and he had once been a close friend of both Sandra and me.He was also the only friend I had in the world. When I told him I was leaving, he looked surprised. "What? Are you dying too?"His question made me laugh."I'm perfectly fine. It's just that I've finally seen things for what they are, and I want to leave this place and all its painful memories behind.""So you're really giving up on Sandra?"I had already told Zane everything that had happened between Sandra and Shawn.I had also told him that I had decided to let Sandra go.

That way, it wouldn't leave any marks, but each blow hurt even more.If I disobeyed, I was beaten. If I told anyone, the beating would only get worse. My father would beat me whenever my grades were bad, too.No one knew about this dark part of my past.Later, when my father forced me to study abroad, my stepmother came to me in private and warned, "You'd better get out of here, and fast!"Otherwise, I'll hurt that girl you like."I had no choice but to leave.Never would I have expected leaving the country to change so many things. When I came back to my senses, I had been beaten within an inch of my life, and my mouth was filled with blood.I couldn't fight back. We borrowed school uniforms from a couple of current students and slipped onto campus, pretending we still went there. The school had changed a lot. The old, rundown athletic field had been rebuilt, and the classrooms had been renovated.Sandra took my hand as we walked."Theo, do you remember when I fainted on the field, and you carried me to the nurse's office?"As we passed the cafeteria, she continued, "You always slipped out of class early to grab my lunch before the rush and waited for me."You always knew what I liked without me having to say a word."I froze. Those weren't memories of us.They must have belonged to her and Shawn. Her heart was so consumed by Shawn that she had mistaken me for him.Sandra was truly cruel. How was this any different from shoving me off a cliff herself?"Sandra, there's a special place in hell for people who betray someone who truly loves them," I thought to myself.......I pulled my hand from hers and was about to tell her I felt sick and wanted

I knew what MECT involved.Electrical shocks would erase many of a patient's memories, including the painful ones. They would then no longer feel sad and hurt themselves.I fell into deep thought. After a long silence, I finally replied, "Maybe next time."With that, I took my medical report and left.I had barely stepped outside when I ran into Sandra. The moment she saw me, her eyes filled with suspicion."What are you doing here?"Of course. Shawn was in this hospital too. She was afraid I might hurt her precious Shawn.I gave a bitter laugh inwardly. "I came in for a checkup."She visibly relaxed. "What's wrong, Theo? Are you feeling sick?"I made up an excuse."I broke my leg a while back. I'm here for a follow-up."Don't worry. I'm not here to see Shawn.""Why didn't you tell me?"She grabbed my hand. "Why didn't you tell me when you broke your leg?"I thought for a moment before answering, "Because you were busy that day. That was the day you and Shawn started dating."Sandra, I
