Chapter 4

I shook off his hand. "I told you, this house belongs to me and Grandpa. I'm never giving it up!"

Damian looked taken aback by my refusal. His frown deepened.

"Zoe, stop throwing a tantrum. Look at Chloe. Don't you have any compassion or gratitude?"

Chloe slumped against the couch, sobbing weakly.

"Damian, don't. Please, all of you, stop pressuring Zoe. It's just my rotten luck! I don't want the house anymore...

"Don't fight with Zoe because of me."

Her face was deathly pale. Her chest heaved, and she coughed so violently it looked like she might breathe her last at any moment.

Everyone rushed to comfort her.

My father yanked a property transfer agreement from a drawer and slammed it down. "Zoe, you'll sign this house over today, whether you like it or not!"

He grabbed my wrist and forced my thumb onto an ink pad.

"Let go of me!"

He twisted my wrist until pain shot up my arm. I fought with all my strength and looked to Damian, still hoping he'd help me.

But he only stood beside Chloe and quietly averted his gaze.

The last of my hope shattered, leaving only a bone-deep chill.

My thumbprint sat in glaring red on the signature line. Just like that, they'd taken the house Grandpa left me...

My mother immediately handed the agreement to Chloe.

Glee flashed in Chloe's eyes. Then she smiled sweetly. "Thank you, Zoe. Don't worry. I'll take good care of the house Grandpa left you."

I wanted to lunge at her and claw her face, but my father still held my arm in a vise grip.

My mother stood beside Chloe. "You saved Zoe's life. Giving you a house is the least she can do. There's no need to thank her.

"You must be hungry after all this. Come on, I'll take you out to celebrate your new house."

They surrounded Chloe and left, chatting and laughing. I was alone on the floor where they'd shoved me, ink smeared across my hand.

I had no idea how long I'd sat there when my phone lit up with a text from Damian.

"Zoe, I know you're upset about the house, but your sister's recovery comes first. Don't be mad. Once we're married, I'll buy you a new place with only your name on the deed."

My heart softened a little. Maybe he did care that they'd hurt me. After years of leaning on him, I wanted to believe it.

Before that warmth could settle, another message appeared.

"Chloe says her biggest regret is never having a real wedding. I want to let her have ours tomorrow. She can be the bride for a day."

"She doesn't have much time. Just be her maid of honor for one day. It's only for show. Afterward, you'll still be Mrs. Crowley."

The warmth vanished, replaced by a cold stab of pain.

My heart seemed to freeze. I couldn't even feel the pain anymore. I could only see how absurd it all was.

I gave her my dress. I gave her my honeymoon. Now she wants my wedding too. Fine. She can have the groom while she's at it!

I texted back a single word, "Okay," then called Lucas.

He picked up almost at once, his voice deep and low. "Ms. Lambert, have you thought it over?"

I looked at the wreckage around me. "Yes. I'll take the position in Paris.

"There's something else I need your help with..."

After we hung up, I booked a flight to Paris for first thing the next morning and started packing.

They came back from their celebration late that night, talking over one another about how Chloe should style her hair and which necklace she'd wear. Not one of them came upstairs to check on me.

I listened in silence, feeling nothing.

Early the next morning, everyone was busy getting Chloe to the hotel ballroom. No one noticed me slip out the back door with my suitcase.

The wedding car arrived on time. Damian, dressed in a white suit, stepped forward and tenderly helped Chloe out.

He looked past my parents and frowned when he didn't see me. "Where's Zoe?"

My mother stepped forward. "Don't worry about her. I haven't seen her since we got up. She's probably throwing another tantrum!"

Chloe dabbed at her eyes. "It's my fault. Zoe must be angry..."

Damian looked like he wanted to say more, but the ceremony was starting. He murmured a few words to comfort Chloe, took her hand, and led her slowly toward the officiant.

Just then, the image on the big screen changed. Every guest turned to look.

The moment she saw what was on it, the color drained from Chloe's face...

A few months later, as Lucas and I were leaving a gala, I ran into someone I'd never expected to see.It was Damian. He'd lost a lot of weight since I'd last seen him. His eyes were sunken, and he looked haggard. The confident, carefree man I'd known was gone. The moment he saw me, his face lit up with wild joy, and he stumbled toward me."Zoe, it really is you! Thank God I found you!"He reached for me, but I pulled away.Damian's hand froze in midair. "Zoe, it's me. I've come to take you home."He seemed to remember something and pulled a ring from his coat. "Look, it's the one you loved. I bought it. If you want, we can have our wedding after all."I took a few steps back and said coldly, "Don't bother. It's over between us. Put the ring away!"Damian stared at me, his eyes pleading. "Zoe, I know I was wrong. I shouldn't have believed Chloe or pushed you to give her our wedding. And I should have helped you when your father forced your thumbprint onto that agreement."Zoe, give me o

For my birthday, Lucas planned an unforgettable surprise at Paris's highest rooftop restaurant.Roses flown in for the occasion filled the room. Lucas had won a pink diamond necklace at auction, and he fastened it around my neck himself. In that moment, I felt my heart skip a beat.Late one night, a storm broke just as I was leaving work. Lucas showed up just in time and drove me back to my apartment. After my shower, I stepped out of the bathroom, drying my hair, and smelled something delicious.I followed the smell to the kitchen. Lucas, so ruthless in business, stood at the stove in an apron with his sleeves rolled up, focused on cooking. He heard me and turned with a smile. "Almost ready. You got caught in the rain. Have something hot to warm up, or you'll have a headache tomorrow."The warm kitchen light softened his sharp features. My heart raced when I met his eyes.I couldn't remember the last time anyone had looked after me like this. Back in New York, my parents and Damian ha

Damian returned to the house and froze when he opened my bedroom door.My room was empty. Everything that belonged to me was gone. It looked as if no one had ever lived there.Panicking, Damian searched every other room. There was no trace of me anywhere. He called my name again and again. No one answered. His hands shook as he called my phone, but every call went straight to voicemail. I'd blocked him. Then something glinted on the desk. It was my wedding ring.He stared at it and texted me with trembling hands. "Zoe, I was wrong. I blamed you for things that weren't your fault. This is on me. I promise I'll make it up to you.""Today was supposed to be our wedding. You said we'd be together forever. Please come back.""Come back, Zoe. I love you!"He kept sending messages, but no reply ever came. Damian beat his fists against his head, overcome with regret and despair...His legs gave way, and he sank to the floor.Only then did he understand: my calm the night before hadn't meant I'

Her falsified medical charts and diagnoses filled the screen.Photos of her bribing the doctor and records of the bank transfers followed. The guests began to whisper."What? Her illness was fake?""I always heard the Lambert family's older daughter was sickly. Turns out she was faking it. And wasn't her sister supposed to be the bride today?"Hearing the whispers, Chloe snapped. She dropped her bouquet and ran toward the control booth, screaming, "That's a lie. Turn it off right now. None of this is real!"My mother stared at the screen, her face ashen. She shook her head, grabbed Chloe's hand, and shielded her."That can't be true. Chloe goes to the hospital every month. She comes home vomiting. How could she have lied to us?"Chloe's eyes filled with tears. "That's right, Mom! Zoe faked all of this. She's angry about the wedding, so she chose today to get back at me!"She grew more worked up as she spoke, then covered her mouth and cried. My mother pulled her into a protective hug.

People nearby turned to stare. The coffee stung my eyes, and my head spun. I could barely make out my mother's words as she jabbed a finger at me.All I could see was her grabbing her purse and storming off without a backward glance.I stood there trembling, covered in coffee. Then someone held out a dark silk handkerchief, and I caught the crisp, woody scent of oud.I looked up, startled, and found a man standing beside me.He wore a sharply tailored charcoal suit, his expression cool and aloof. It was Lucas Harmon, the head of the Harmon Group. No one in New York dared cross him. He'd taken charge of a business empire at a young age and ruled it with an iron fist.Just last week, I'd represented my company at a strategy meeting with his firm. He'd sat at the head of the table, untouchable."Ms. Lambert, here. Wipe your face."Lucas's voice was reassuring, without a trace of mockery. At a small gesture from him, his assistant went to a nearby mall to buy me clean clothes. He was still
