THE ATTENTION HE WANTED 2

Logan stared after them, his chest tightening as he watched them walk away. Just as he was about opening his mouth to really calm him this time, Sophie pulled away from him. "Logan?"

He blinked. "Yeah?"

She frowned. "You haven't paid attention to me." She tilted her head. “Is everything okay? Since… last night, you've just been… different.”

Logan grabbed her hand and pulled her back slightly before shoving his hands deep into his pockets. "I am fine," he said simply

Ethan shot up so quickly that his chair scraped against the floor. "What happened?"'We have the results,' he said, pausing in front of him.My heart shot. Blake hadn't returned, and I was in front of the doctor by myself. "What did you discover?"The doctor fixed his eyes. "However, there's a complication."Ethan's stomach sank. "What kind?""We think Jake has injured one of the large blood vessels in his chest."Ethan looked at him. It made no sense to him. "The accident?""Most likely.""But he was stable.""He was," the doctor said, nodding. "We think the wound was bleeding all this time, and the scan you had before might not have shown it."Ethan's face turned pale. "Can you stop this?""Possibly."He was unimpressed by the word. "What?"The doctor took a deep breath. "Jake needs surgery.""Now?" Ethan asked, his voice cracking."Immediately.""How dangerous is it?"Ethan hadn't even been able to speak; the doctor hadn't spoken either, and that had told Ethan more than he could h

The following forty minutes dragged on in a fog. A nurse eventually ushered Ethan and Blake further down the hall so that the doctors could do what they needed to do, then she drew the curtains tight around Jake's room. Ethan could not see his brother any longer, and that was almost more miserable than watching. Ethan sank down in a plastic chair with his elbows resting on his knees, his fingers interlocked so tightly that his knuckles ached. Blake sat next to him. Neither of them made a sound. The hospital had fallen silent once more. The alarms had ceased and the shouting had long since ceased, but Ethan couldn't settle down. Every time footsteps drew near, his head shot up, and every time they passed, his stomach clenched painfully more."Let's call your parents," Blake finally said in a soft voice.Ethan shut his eyes. He had tried not to think about it for hours, because the second you did, it became true. "Yeah.""Do you want me to do it?""No." Ethan drew his phone from his p

CODINGEthan followed the doctor back to the room where Jake still snoozed in bed. He sat in the chair next to the bed and this time, when the monitor caught his eye, his gaze lazily swept across to where Jake lay. The boy who had spent years instructing him how not to do everything, driving him nuts, frightening the crap out of him and well, humiliating him too. But the boy who'd stood by him in ways Ethan hadn't yet figured out. Who made him afraid to be himself. Hard to imagine losing him now.Ethan touched Jake's hand softly, and Jake's hand twitched. Ethan held his breath; Jake's eyes fluttered."You still here?" Jake croaked out.Ethan blinked quickly. "Yeah. " he chuckled."You're supposed to be home.""So are you.""Technically, no." Jake looked around at the rails of the bed and the hoses.Ethan chuckled, and Jake groaned, rubbing his hand against his side. "Please don't make me laugh.""Sorry."Jake closed his eyes for a moment, then continued to speak with his eyes closed

  • I FELL FOR MY BEST FRIEND'S TWIN   CHAPTER SIXTY-TWO: WHAT DYLAN DECIDED

WHAT DYLAN DECIDEDThe gentle sound of the rain tapping against the attic window somehow seeped into his dreams, the sound pulling him from his sleep. For a long time, he lay perfectly still, gazing upwards, and allowed the gray of the morning to envelope him. And then reality hit him in the image of Lucas's disappointed look on the porch, his hollow words through the door, and his brother counting cash among carefully arranged packages.Fuck. He had not slept well. And he probably won't be able to sleep anytime soon. So he decided to take that as his cue to get up. Slowly, he climbed down from the attic to stretch his cramped muscles. Staying awake in this cramped space for two nights in a row had been quite exhausting. On the way towards the bathroom, he took a good look at himself in the mirror. There was the faint yellow bruise on his jaw, dark circles under his eyes and that unique, haunted expression of someone who had seen the things he could not unsee in the past seventy-two

  • I FELL FOR MY BEST FRIEND'S TWIN   CHAPTER SIXTY-ONE: SECOND PLACE

SECOND PLACE Lucas trudged back toward the main street that led to his house, backpack straps cutting into his shoulders, trying to organize everything about the conversation he'd just had with Dylan at his front door - and coming up blank. Something about it had been off today - not the words, which, each individually, had seemed totally reasonable, but the way in which Dylan had said them - too fast, too rehearsed, too… practiced, like someone performing lines he'd memorized in the mirror. When he reached the corner, he fished out his phone and scrolled to Logan's contact. Hit dial. It rang three times before his brother answered, sounding haphazard and sleepy through the line. "What?""Are you going to school today?" Lucas asked. He glanced back toward Dylan's house, then slowly made his way down the street toward Brookwoods High. "Nope.""Great."Lucas sighed and rubbed his forehead, frustrated. "Can you at least come pick me up? I was going to walk with Dylan but… that's n

  • I FELL FOR MY BEST FRIEND'S TWIN   CHAPTER SIXTY: THE DOOR HE HAD TO CLOSE The knock

THE DOOR HE HAD TO CLOSE The knock sounded again; sharper this time. Three quick raps, then a pause. Two more. A rhythm that started down the scale – a little polite, a little courteous – that somehow made it worse. Dylan felt his entire body turn stiff. "You know who that is?"he whispered, just barely moving his lips, eyes immediately darting to his brother, sitting across the living room. "No," Rocky whispered, already hauling himself up off the couch, grimacing fiercely as he moved to tug at his bandaged arm. He reached under the cushions next to him and pulled out a gun that Dylan hadn't even known was there, curling his fingers around the grip with practiced precision. "Go to your room. Now.""What?""Dylan."Rocky's voice was low and urgent, his eyes hard. "I need you upstairs."Dylan opened his mouth to protest again but, suddenly, there was another knock; a third knock, and there was something about the particular cadence of that knock – rapid, familiar, impatient in
