FAZER LOGINElena smiled confidently.
“I promise you.”
Lillian was truly lucky. If Elena had not divorced Asher, Dr. Wright might have remained retired from medicine, and Lillian might never have had a chance at survival.
After quickly completing her examination of Lillian’s condition, Elena left the room with Asher.
The moment they were out of earshot, the smile disappeared from her face.
She said seriously,
“You should have had her undergo surgery much earlier.”
Asher nodded.
“I know... but I only found you recently.”
Elena said,
“There are other surgeons in the country who can perform this operation.”
She couldn’t understand why he was so insistent on having her perform the surgery.
Asher paused for a moment before saying,
“Perhaps you’re right... but I don’t want to take any chances, no matter how small.”
Dr. Wright’s reputation extended far beyond the country.
She had trained under one of the greatest neurosurgeons in the world and had since become one of the most skilled surgeons in her field.
That was why Asher had preferred to wait until he found her rather than expose Lillian to even the slightest possibility of failure.
Hearing this, Elena felt a pang in her heart.
She thought,
“So, Asher... you’re capable of caring this much. Then why couldn’t you show even a fraction of that concern to the wife you couldn’t even be bothered to see? Your own wife... or rather, your ex-wife.”
She wasn’t upset because she loved him. It was because he had wounded her pride.
Ever since childhood, Elena had been ambitious, always striving to excel at everything she did.
Her marriage to Asher had been the only failure in her life, and it had left her feeling deeply humiliated.
She didn’t mind that he had never fallen in love with her.
What she couldn’t accept was that he hadn’t even bothered to see her.
Especially with her fiercely proud personality, that was something she could never tolerate.
She had assumed that they would never meet again after the divorce.
Yet here he was, asking for her help to save the woman he loved.
He had trampled all over her pride.
And yet, she still couldn’t bring herself to abandon a patient in need, which only made her feel more frustrated.
She looked at him and said,
“Mr. Bennett, don’t celebrate too soon. It’s true that I’ve agreed to treat Miss Hayes, but I have conditions.”
She had decided to make him pay a steep price. Otherwise, she would feel as though she were getting the short end of the deal.
Asher replied calmly,
“Go ahead. Tell me what they are.”
In fact, he felt relieved to hear that she had conditions.
It made things easier for him.
Elena thought for a moment before saying,
“I’m in the process of establishing a research laboratory, and I need funding and equipment.”
He answered immediately,
“No problem. The Bennett family will take care of it.”
She continued,
“Silverton Hospital is also lacking the latest surgical equipment.”
Without hesitation, he replied,
“We’ll provide that as well.”
He would have provided the equipment even if she hadn’t asked for it, because he wasn’t willing to take any risk with Lillian’s life.
He agreed to all her demands without the slightest hesitation.
Elena glanced at him and said softly,
“Mr. Bennett, I’m surprised. It seems you’re willing to do anything for Miss Hayes.”
He nodded.
“Yes. She’s very important to me.”
Then, privately, he added the real reason.
He was indebted to her brother, who had once saved his life, and caring for Lillian had been his final wish.
Elena, however, misunderstood.
“So... his heart is cold only toward me. Fine. Why should I care anyway? Our marriage is over, and after this surgery, we’ll be complete strangers to each other.”
Then she suddenly said,
“Since you’re being so generous, Mr. Bennett, why don’t you donate a new building to the hospital as well? We desperately need an additional inpatient building.”
Silverton Hospital’s facilities were modest, and it had a limited number of beds, preventing many patients from receiving the treatment they needed.
Elena believed that making him donate a building would benefit the entire medical community.
Asher’s expression darkened immediately.
He gritted his teeth and said irritably,
“Dr. Wright, it seems you’re only thinking about the interests of your hospital.”
The funding and equipment alone would cost him millions, and now she was asking him to provide an entire building, which would cost considerably more.
But Elena didn’t care if she angered him.
She said calmly,
“It seems you’re unwilling to do that. I’m not forcing you... but as for Miss Hayes —”
Asher interrupted through gritted teeth,
“I’ll donate it.”
She had known he would agree.
For Lillian’s sake, he was willing to pay any price.
Then he asked her sternly, his intimidating presence making the air around them feel heavy,
“Do you have any other conditions? Tell me all of them at once.”
He looked as though he might strangle her if she added another demand.
But Elena knew when to stop.
Besides, even if he refused to give her anything, she would save Lillian anyway.
She felt that she had already gotten enough.
She shook her head.
“That’s everything.”
He then asked,
“Then... when will we perform the surgery?”
“As soon as the equipment arrives, we can begin.”
“The equipment will arrive tomorrow.”
He looked at her with utmost seriousness.
“Dr. Wright... please save Lillian.”
Elena didn’t agree with Vivian’s opinion. From her perspective, Asher wasn’t the kind of man who would easily enter into a marriage or a political alliance. If he were, he wouldn’t have resisted his family’s arrangements for all those years. Moreover, based on the few moments when she had seen Asher interact with Nora, there seemed to be genuine feelings between them.Elena couldn’t help but remember the rumors surrounding Nora. She had always been famous for her beauty and elegance, and she came from a prestigious family.Perhaps Asher’s near-marriage to her hadn’t been merely a political arrangement.Perhaps it had also been the result of genuine feelings between them. But whether those feelings had been true love or not was something only Asher himself knew.Of course, there was no need for Elena to say any of this to Vivian.Everything she was thinking was nothing more than speculation.Their conversation ended as the banquet officially began.Harold had already arrived in the hal
Elena was warning him.Although their relationship seemed good at the moment, she wouldn’t tolerate it if he crossed her boundaries.Kevin nodded with a smile, then leaned closer and whispered softly near her ear,“Don’t worry… I know where to draw the line.”In truth, he was only deliberately trying to make Asher uncomfortable. He had no intention of actually acting recklessly.Elena, however, wasn’t comfortable with how close he was.She shot him a sharp look before turning around and walking toward a quiet corner where there were fewer people, hoping to rest for a while.“Ena.”Vivian approached her with a glass of champagne and handed it to her.Elena nodded gratefully and asked,“Where are your parents?”Vivian pointed toward the other side of the hall and pursed her lips.“Over there… It looks like they’re discussing a potential collaboration with some people.”It was obvious from her expression that she didn’t like seeing them do this.Elena smiled calmly.“For the Bennett fami
The car moved slowly, and after a period of silence, Kevin finally broke it.“You know your kidnapping was connected to James, right?”Elena nodded and looked at him in surprise.“Yes.”Kevin gave a soft chuckle before asking casually,“And are you just going to let it go?”Elena raised an eyebrow but didn’t answer, waiting for him to continue.Kevin said,“The Foster family has deep influence in Silverton City, and it will be difficult to uproot them with Jonathan alone.”Elena smiled as though she already knew what he was getting at.“And?”He answered directly,“I can help you.”Elena laughed lightly and stared at him for a moment before turning her gaze away.“Help me? Hasn’t the Foster family been your target from the beginning? Isn’t what you really want to do is swallow them up and strengthen your influence?”There’s only one pie.If one person gets a bigger slice, someone else has to settle for a smaller one.How could she possibly not understand Kevin’s intentions?Kevin smil
“Did she really grow up in the countryside?”Whether it was Dr. Wright, the famous doctor, or Mr. Mikhail’s student, that alone was enough to prove one thing.Elena was anything but an ordinary person.Harold was confused by Asher’s words and asked,“What do you mean?”Asher saw no point in hiding it, so he told his grandfather Elena’s true identity. In any case, Harold would discover the truth after tonight’s banquet, so it was better for him to know beforehand and be prepared. But Harold’s reaction was completely different from what Asher had expected.Instead of being shocked, a serious expression appeared on his face, as though he had fallen deep into thought. After a long silence, he said slowly,“Elena… she was destined to become an extraordinary person.”So… that old man hadn’t been lying to him.The blood flowing through Elena’s veins was enough to make her extraordinary. The members of that family had always possessed exceptional talents.Asher looked at him.“Grandpa… I feel
Elena and Jonathan spoke on the phone for quite some time, discussing the Foster family’s weaknesses before finally ending the call.In the blink of an eye, it was already four in the afternoon. There were only two hours left before it was time to head to the birthday banquet.Elena rose from the sofa and headed to the dressing room to do her makeup and get ready.Harold’s birthday banquet was being held that evening at the luxurious Crown stone Hotel in Silverton City. The Bennett family had spared no expense, reserving the entire hotel for the occasion. As the actual host of the banquet, Asher had arrived at the hotel early to make sure everything was going smoothly. It was his grandfather’s seventieth birthday, so he was determined to oversee every detail. When Benjamin saw how busy he had been all day, he said,“Mr. Bennett, you should get some rest. I’ll take care of everything here.”But Asher didn’t leave. Instead, he asked,“Where’s Grandpa?”Benjamin replied,“Mr. Harold Benn
Asher didn’t say anything, but the dark expression on his face was enough to reveal what was going through his mind.Knowing Elena as he did, he was certain that she would agree. She might even take the initiative herself.Kevin waved at him with a smile.“See you tonight, Mr. Bennett. And I hope you won’t tell the Foster family about what I said.”Then he got into his gleaming red sports car and drove away.Asher watched the car until it disappeared from sight, his gaze growing colder. He raised his head and looked toward the floor where Elena lived before turning around and leaving.Meanwhile, Elena slept until noon, making up for some of the sleeplessness she had suffered the night before. She got out of bed and, as usual, picked up her phone to check her messages.Vivian had sent her a message reminding her that Harold’s birthday banquet was tonight and asking whether she would attend.Elena replied before moving on to the rest of her messages. She also found a message from Lucy,
