Chapter 3

Author: Fifteen
Phoebe saw how emotional I had become and reached out to grab my arm, but I shook her off immediately. Her expression darkened, and her tone grew harsher. “Is this how he taught you to talk back to your own mother? After everything he’s been through, he’s still as bitter and spiteful as ever.”

I almost laughed when I heard that. “Spiteful? My father and I spent years hiding from you, doing everything we could to stay out of your lives. Is that still not enough for you?”

Mom furrowed her brows. “This is between adults. You don’t understand.”

I let out a cold laugh. “I don’t understand? Yeah, you’re the one who understands best. You knew exactly how to throw us away.

Her eyes instantly turned cold. “When your father took you away, did he ever think about your future? He only took you to force me into giving in. Did he ever fulfill his responsibilities as a father?”

I looked at her in disbelief and let out a bitter laugh. “How can you even say that? Wasn’t it you who told us to get out of your life?”

She fell silent for a moment before quickly turning the blame back on me.

“You weren’t thinking clearly back then. I only wanted you to focus on your college entrance exams and stay out of adult matters. If you hadn’t gone there and caused a scene that day, things might not have turned out the way they did.”

I stared at her, feeling my heart grow colder with every word. Even now, she still thought I was the one at fault.

After that night, Dad came down with a high fever. His entire body trembled uncontrollably.

The next morning was the day exam results would be released. Even so, he forced himself out of bed and made me some food, telling me over and over not to be afraid and to check my scores with confidence.

Just as I was about to leave, Julian showed up. He brought a bag of fruit and pretended he had come to visit a classmate. My father did not want anything to do with him and was about to shut the door.

Suddenly, he dropped to his knees and burst into tears, loudly claiming that he was innocent and that all he wanted was a family. He cried so loudly that it quickly attracted our neighbors’ attention.

Before long, Mom and Phoebe arrived as well. They had not come to comfort Dad. They came to accuse my father and me of bullying Julian once again.

Dad was trembling with anger, so furious that he was on the verge of collapsing. Yet he still stood in front of me to protect me. “Get out! You’re not allowed to bully my son!”

Amid the chaos of the argument, Julian deliberately backed toward the kitchen. The next second, he knocked over the gas stove. The hot oil in the pan burst into flames, and the entire house was thrown into chaos.

Dad’s first instinct was not to save himself but to push me outside. He shoved me toward the doorway. When I looked back, all I saw was the fire illuminating his face in a crimson glow.

Julian smirked before running outside.

Mom and Phoebe rushed to protect him without hesitation. My father was the only one remaining trapped inside.

I went mad and tried to run back into the flames. I screamed for my father again and again. By the end of it, all that came from my throat were bloodied, rasping breaths.

It took our neighbors and the firefighters who had rushed to the scene to hold me back. I could only watch as my father collapsed into the flames. My face was badly burned, and my voice was ruined forever.

I stood numbly in the hospital when I received a call from my school. I had been admitted to one of the country’s most prestigious universities.

Dad survived after the emergency treatment. He held me in his arms and cried. I cried with him, overwhelmed with joy and relief.

From that day on, with the scholarship money the school awarded me, I was barely able to support our lives. Then, on the day I was supposed to leave for university, an accident happened.

By the time everything came crashing down, Julian and Damian had nowhere left to run. Things truly spiraled out of control on the day I was supposed to be discharged from the hospital. That day, only Serena and I were in the room. My uncle had gone to take care of the paperwork. Phoebe had gone downstairs to pick up my medication. Mom was at the end of the hallway, speaking with her lawyer on the phone.Suddenly, the door to my hospital room slammed open. Julian rushed in.He looked like he had gone completely insane. His hair was disheveled, his eyes were bloodshot, and there was a fruit knife clutched tightly in his hand. The moment he saw me, he lunged forward. All the while, he screamed at me.He screamed at me, demanding to know why I could not just stay buried in the dirt and why I had to drag the truth into the light. He said that if it were not for me, he would not have lost so completely. He would not have ended up with nothing. He even cried as he shouted that I had rui

The scandal outside only grew bigger. At last, Mom uncovered the whole truth about what had happened all those years ago.Julian had never appeared by accident. He and his adoptive father had set their sights on her long ago. They knew she cared deeply about her reputation and was especially vulnerable to stories of something precious being lost and found again.Hence, they deliberately got close to her, staged an accident after she had been drinking, and slowly pulled her away from Dad. They even fabricated the lie that Julian was her biological child. What made it all the more ironic was that my sister had not been completely unaware that my college admission had been stolen. She had known for a long time that Julian was not a good student. There was no way he could have gotten into Imperial College. She questioned him in private more than once and even suspected something was wrong. Yet every time he shed a few tears, she softened.Mom was never willing to admit that she had tr

The hospital room suddenly fell completely silent. The expression on Mom’s face froze. My sister also turned sharply to look at her.“No way,” Mom denied it instinctively. “I personally told my assistant to handle that card. There was money on it.”As I listened to her, I only found it more absurd. “Before Dad’s surgery, the nurse told me herself that there wasn’t a single cent in that card. That day, I stood at the payment counter holding that card, my mind completely blank. I thought that if I moved faster, if I found another way, Dad would still survive.“But in the end, even the last bit of hope I was holding onto was fake.”Mom’s face slowly turned pale. It was as though she had suddenly thought of something. She immediately took out her phone and called her former assistant. The moment the call connected, she asked directly, “The card I told you to send to the hospital three years ago, did you tamper with it?”There was a moment of silence on the other end, then the person

I was asleep for two days in the hospital. When I woke up again, the first thing that hit me was the sharp smell of disinfectant. I frowned and tried to sit up, but the needle taped to the back of my hand pulled painfully. I sucked in a breath. The person keeping watch beside me immediately stood up. I turned my head to look. It was not my mother. It was my sister.Phoebe’s eyes were dark with exhaustion. Her short hair was slightly messy, as though she had not slept properly in two days. The moment she saw me awake, she instinctively reached out and pressed my shoulder down, stopping me from moving.“The doctor said you’re severely malnourished. Your wounds were infected, and you had a high fever too. If you move around too much, they might reopen.”I stared at her for two seconds. Then, I slowly pushed her hand away. “Get out.”The room fell silent. She stood beside the bed for a long time before finally saying in a low voice, “I’m sorry.”I closed my eyes. I only found it ri

My first instinct was to hold the urn tighter. I got up to lock the door, but the old lock had stopped working properly a long time ago. Before I could fully secure it, the door was suddenly shoved open from the outside.Mom rushed in first, and Phoebe followed behind her. Both of their expressions looked extremely grim. The moment they entered, the first thing they saw was not me. It was the memorial, the white flowers, the candles, and the urn placed at the center.Mom stopped instantly, and Phoebe froze behind her.Mom stared at the urn for a long time before finally forcing the words out. “What is that?”I did not answer. However, she refused to believe it. She took two more steps forward, her eyes locked tightly on the urn. “This is something you put here to scare me, isn’t it? Is your father causing trouble again? Did you and someone else plan all of this together to hide him somewhere?”She kept asking question after question. Her voice became more frantic with every word

  • I Finally Let Go   Chapter 5

Phoebe looked at me, wanting to say something but unable to. In the end, she still left with Mom.After everyone was gone, I suddenly felt all my strength leave me. I thought saying those words would finally bring me relief, yet it did not. There was only exhaustion. I was so tired that I did not even want to hate them anymore. When I returned to my rented room that night, it was already dark. I walked over and, as usual, gently wiped the urn with a tissue. Tears slowly fell as I wiped.“Dad… If I had grown up faster… Would you not have died?”I sat on the floor, holding the urn tightly in my arms and pressing my forehead against its cold surface. That was how I fell asleep. In my dream, I remembered the past. That day, countless people flooded into my live stream, accusing my father of being a homewrecker. As the situation grew bigger and bigger, someone dug up our personal information. From everyone else’s perspective, my father and I were nothing more than shameless parasites
