Reed Living Room, Night

The living room had transformed into a child’s fantasy fort, filled with soft mountains of throw pillows, tangled fleece blankets, and strands of fairy lights glowing in a warm constellation above.

The air smelled faintly of melted butter, sugar dust, and lavender from a diffuser in the corner.

The TV screen softly illuminated the room with scenes from Lola & Romeo, the classic rom-com that Pearl had called “iconic.”

The dialogue played quietly in the background, but no one was actually paying attention.

Pearl had fallen asleep about twenty minutes ago, wrapped up in her blanket like a cosy burrito, with a red sprinkle stuck to her cheek.

Ava sat at one end of the couch, tucked in under the blanket, her legs curled beneath her. Her hair was slightly mussed, and her sweatshirt was oversized and comforable.

Alex sat at the other end, arms stretched across the back of the couch. Too close to be just friendly, not close enough to be anything else… yet.

  • I Found My Mafia Mom, A Cop Husband   076. Dock 4C...

Fog rolled off the harbour like smoke from a dying fire. It coiled between steel shipping containers, wrapped around corroded cranes, and curled through rusted fences like a serpent finding its way home.Dock 4C was silent. Too silent. The faint creak of mooring lines and the occasional splash of black water were the only sounds—until bootsteps broke through it. Sharp. Unyielding. Purposeful.Ava Reed moved like a shadow in the mist. She was clad in obsidian—an armoured tactical suit stitched with Kevlar and high-grade ballistic mesh, molded perfectly to her frame. It absorbed light, almost seemed to drink it. Under the hood of her tactical cloak, her face was shielded by a matte black mask. Her eyes, exposed and focused, burned like twin blades behind narrow visors. No jewelry. No sentiment. Just silence and precision.Around her moved a dozen hand-picked La Rosa enforcers, armed with suppressed rifles and hand signals. No one spoke unless she allowed it.“Crates marked C-31 to C-42,

    – Reed Estate, Late AfternoonThe car door hadn’t even shut before Pearl sprang out, sneakers thudding onto the warm brick driveway. A glittery paper bag bounced on her hip, its fragile handle near breaking under the weight of construction paper, glue sticks, and determination.Inside it: Two crooked paper crowns trimmed with silver sparkles, three hand-drawn invitations, and a folded sign, scrawled in bold pink marker: “Queen & Dad’s Day?”She wore hope like a second backpack. As she stepped into the foyer, her grandmother, Eleanor Reed, always elegantly composed even in casual linen, met her with a fond smile and open arms.“There’s my hurricane,” Eleanor said as Pearl barreled in for a hug.“Hi, Granny.” Pearl squeezed her tight, then leaned back. “Is Alex still coming today? Mommy said he would.”Eleanor hesitated, smoothing a flyaway curl from Pearl’s cheek. “Sweetheart, I haven’t heard anything. But I do know that when he does show up, he and I are going to have a serious talk.

The first fist came too fast to dodge.Alex's head jerked sideways as it slammed into his jaw, slamming him back against the wall. But pain wasn’t new. It only sharpened his focus. He ducked low, sweeping the feet out from the man on the right, and caught a flash of steel near his ribs.Gun.Alex twisted, slamming an elbow into the second man’s forearm just before the shot went off. The bullet punched through the drywall and sent plaster flying. The hallway exploded with motion. He spun and drove his knee into the first guy’s chest, knocking him into the opposite wall. The agent stumbled, wheezing, but didn’t drop.Alex didn’t wait.He yanked the cuff from the guy’s belt, cracked it across the back of his neck, and ducked another swing. The second man grabbed him by the collar, slammed him into the vending machine with a grunt of effort.“You’re done,” the agent growled.“Not yet.”Alex jammed his knee into the agent’s groin, grabbed the back of his head, and slammed it into the side

The diner looked like a time capsule that had been forgotten on purpose.Grease-stained tiles, a cracked leather booth, and a jukebox that hadn’t played since before Y2K. The sun crept through yellowed blinds in thin, hazy bands, painting lines across the dusty Formica tables.Alex sat in the corner booth, his sleeves rolled up, his jacket draped over the seat beside him. He looked like someone used to listening more than talking, a detective dressed in the polite stillness of someone trying to coax answers without spooking the source.Across from him, Gene Valco looked like a ghost. His skin was wind-worn and sallow, his hair thinned to a silver whisper. The man clutched a chipped mug of stale coffee like it was the only thing tethering him to the moment. They hadn’t spoken for nearly two minutes.Just sat there. Watching.Listening.Judging the other’s breath. Then Alex spoke in a quiet voice. No badge. No authority. Just an invitation.“Long way from New York, Officer Valco.”Valc

Outside Phoenix – Midday HeatThe Sun Valley Motel sat wedged between a forgotten gas station and a faded diner, its vacancy sign half-lit and buzzing faintly. The stucco walls had been painted peach sometime in the late '90s and hadn't seen a fresh coat since. A single palm tree drooped in the parking lot, casting a long shadow over the cracked pavement.Alex stepped into the small, air-conditioned lobby with a duffel slung over his shoulder and sunglasses still in place. The chill air smelled faintly of bleach and cheap vanilla candles.Behind the counter, a young woman with bleached-blonde curls and a nose ring straightened as he approached. Her name tag read Tanya, and she blinked at him once before smiling too brightly.“Checking in?”“Yeah. Just a night,” Alex said in a low voice, handing over one of his fake ID. His alias read Kyle Jensen—Arizona address, Midwestern roots, scrubbed clean.Tanya looked at the card, then at him. “We don’t usually get the tall, handsome, and da
